Szego projections and new invariants for CR and contact manifolds

In this paper we give a survey of the constructions in math.DG/0510061 of several new invariants for CR and contact manifolds. The latter extend previous constructions of Hirachi and Boutet de Monvel. In addition, we give simple algebro-geometric arguments proving that Hirachi's invariant vanishes on strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension 4m+1.

Noncommutative residue invariants for CR and contact manifolds

In this paper we produce several new invariants for CR and contact manifolds by looking at the noncommutative residue traces of various geometric projections. In the CR setting these operators arise from the Kohn-Rossi complex and include the Szegö projections on forms. In the contact setting they stem from the generalized Szegö projections at arbitrary integer levels of Epstein-Melrose and from the contact complex of Rumin. In particular, we recover and extend recent results of Hirachi and Boutet de Monvel and answer a question of Fefferman.

Logarithmic Trace of Toeplitz Projectors

We prove that the trace of the logarithmic term of the Toeplitz kernel on a contact manifold is a contact invariant, generalizing K. Hirachi's invariant for the Szego kernel on a CR manifold. When the base manifold is the three-sphere, this vanishes identically.

Contact structures of arbitrary codimension and idempotents in the Heisenberg algebra

A contact manifold is a manifold equipped with a distribution of codimension one that satisfies a `maximal non-integrability' condition. A standard example of a contact structure is a strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold, and operators of analytic interest are the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator and the Szego projector onto its kernel. Nonnegativity of the CR Paneitz operator for embeddable CR manifolds

The nonnegativity of the CR Paneitz operator plays a crucial role in three-dimensional CR geometry. In this paper, we prove this nonnegativity for embeddable CR manifolds. This result and previous works give an affirmative solution of the CR Yamabe problem for embeddable CR manifolds. We also show the existence of a contact form with zero CR $Q$-curvature, and generalize the total $Q$-prime curvature to embeddable CR manifolds with no pseudo-Einstein contact forms. Furthermore, we discuss the logarithmic singularity of the Szegő kernel.

Contact cylindrical surfaces and a projection of a surface around a parabolic point

We investigate differential geometric properties of a parabolic point of a surface in the Euclidean three space. We introduce the contact cylindrical surface which is a cylindrical surface having a degenerate contact type with the original surface at a parabolic point. Furthermore, we show that such a contact property gives a characterization to the $\mathcal{A}$-singularity of the orthogonal projection of a surface from the asymptotic direction.

Singularities of affine equidistants: projections and contacts

Using standard methods for studying singularities of projections and of contacts, we classify the stable singularities of affine $λ$-equidistants of $n$-dimensional closed submanifolds of $\mathbb R^q$, for $q\leq 2n$, whenever $(2n,q)$ is a pair of nice dimensions.

On the flat geometry of the cuspidal edge

We study the geometry of the cuspidal edge $M$ in $\mathbb R^3$ derived from its contact with planes and lines (referred to as flat geometry). The contact of $M$ with planes is measured by the singularities of the height functions on $M$. Symplectic manifolds with disconnected contact type boundary in dimension 4n

We give examples of compact symplectic manifolds with disconnected contact type boundary in dimension $4n$ for any $n\geq 1$. The example is given by a subset of the tangent bundle of a compact quotient of the complex hyperbolic space endowed with the canonical symplectic form plus a generalized magnetic field and its boundary is given by two hypersurfaces of constant kinetic energy. In particular, when $n=1$, it is obtained by the tangent bundle of a surface of genus greater than 1 endowed with the canonical symplectic form plus the pullback of the Kähler form by the canonical projection.
