Newstead and Ramanan conjectured the vanishing of the top (2g-1) Chern classes of the moduli space of stable, odd degree vector bundles of rank 2 on a Riemann surface of genus g. This was proved by Gieseker [G], while an analogue in rank 3 was recently settled by Kiem and Li [KL]. We generalise this to the vanishing of the top (g-1)r rational Chern classes of the moduli space M of stable principal bundles with semi-simple structure group of rank r, whenever M is a compact orbifold.

Poincaré families of G-bundles on a curve

Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field k. Consider the moduli space of stable principal G-bundles on a smooth projective curve C over k. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Poincaré bundles over open subsets of this moduli space, and compute the orders of the corresponding obstruction classes. This generalizes the previous results of Newstead, Ramanan and Balaji-Biswas-Nagaraj-Newstead to all reductive groups, to all topological types of bundles, and also to all characteristics.

The Index Formula on the Moduli of G-bundles

We prove the formulae conjectured by the first author for the index of K-theory classes over the moduli stack of algebraic G-bundles on a smooth projective curve. The formulae generalise Verlinde's for line bundles and have Witten's integrals over the moduli space of stable bundles as their large level limits. As an application, we prove the Newstead-Ramanan conjecture on the vanishing of high Chern classes of certain moduli spaces of stable G-bundles.

Geometry of the intersection ring and vanishing relations in the cohomology of the moduli space of parabolic bundles on a curve

We study the ring generated by the Chern classes of tautological line bundles on the moduli space of parabolic bundles of arbitrary rank on a Riemann surface. We show the Poincaré duals to these Chern classes have simple geometric representatives. We use this construction to show that the ring generated by these Chern classes vanishes below the dimension of the moduli space, in analogy with the Newstead-Ramanan conjecture for stable bundles.

Vanishing of top equivariant Chern classes of regular embeddings

Let $G$ be a connected affine algebraic group and $X$ a regular $G$-variety (in the sense of Bifet-De Concini-Procesi) with open orbit $G/H$ and boundary divisor $D$. We show the vanishing of the $G$-equivariant Chern classes of the bundle of differential forms on $X$ with logarithmic poles along $D$, in degrees larger than $\dim(X) - \rk(G) + \rk(H)$. Our motivation comes from Gieseker's degeneration method to prove the Newstead-Ramanan conjecture on the vanishing of the top Chern classes of the moduli space of stable vector bundles on a curve.

Vanishing of the top Chern classes of the moduli of vector bundles

Let $Y$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\ge 2$ and let $M_{r,d}(Y)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on $Y$. A classical conjecture of Newstead and Ramanan states that $ c_i(M_{2,1}(Y))=0$ for $i>2(g-1)$ i.e. the top $2g-1$ Chern classes vanish. The purpose of this paper is to generalize this vanishing result to the rank 3 case by generalizing Gieseker's degeneration method. More precisely, we prove that $c_i(M_{3,1}(Y))=0$ for $i>6g-5$. In other words, the top $3g-3$ Chern classes vanish. Notice that we also have $c_i(M_{3,2}(Y))=0$ for $i>6g-5$.

Intermediate Jacobians of moduli spaces

Let $SU_X(n,L)$ be the moduli space of rank n semistable vector bundles with fixed determinant L on a smooth projective genus g curve X. Let $SU_X^s(n,L)$ denote the open subset parametrizing stable bundles. We show that if g>3 and n > 1, then the mixed Hodge structure on $H^3(SU_X^s(n, L))$ is pure of type ${(1,2),(2,1)}$ and it carries a natural polarization such that the associated polarized intermediate Jacobian is isomorphic J(X). Extension of structure groups of principal bundles in positive characteristic

In this article we study the behaviour of semistable principal $G$-bundles over a smooth projective variety $X$ under the extension of structure groups in positive characteristic.
