The celebrated Kadison--Sakai theorem states that every derivation on a von Neumann algebra is inner. In this paper, we prove this theorem for ultraweakly continuous *-σ-derivations, where σis an ultraweakly continuous surjective *-linear mapping. We decompose a $σ$-derivation into a sum of an inner σ-derivation and a multiple of a homomorphism. The so-called *-(σ,τ)-derivations are also discussed.

We show the existence of a measurable selector in Carpenter's Theorem due to Kadison. This solves a problem posed by Jasper and the first author. As an application we obtain a characterization of all possible spectral functions of shift-invariant subspaces of $L^2(\mathbb R^d)$ and Carpenter's Theorem for type I$_\infty$ von Neumann algebras.
Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava recently solved the Kadison-Singer problem by showing that if u_1, ..., u_m are column vectors in C^d such that \sum u_iu_i^* = I, then a set of indices S \subseteq {1, ..., m} can be chosen so that \sum_{i \in S} u_iu_i^* is approximately (1/2)I, with the approximation good in operator norm to order ε^{1/2} where ε= \max \|u_i\|^2. Recently Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava gave a spectacular proof of a theorem which implies a positive solution to the Kadison-Singer problem via Weaver's $KS_r$ conjecture. We extend this theorem to the realm of hyperbolic polynomials and hyperbolicity cones, as well as to arbitrary ranks. We also sharpen the theorem by providing better bounds, which imply better bounds in Weaver's $KS_r$ conjecture for each $r>2$. For $r=2$ our bound agrees with Bownik et al.

In this paper we survey a recent progress on continuous frames inspired by the solution of the Kadison-Singer problem by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava. We present an extension of Lyapunov's theorem for discrete frames due to Akemann and Weaver and a similar extension for continuous frames by the author. We also outline a solution of the discretization problem, which was originally posed by Ali, Antoine, and Gazeau, and recently solved by Freeman and Speegle.
Akemann and Weaver (2014) have shown a remarkable extension of Weaver's $KS_r$ Conjecture (2004) in the form of approximate Lyapunov's theorem. This was made possible thanks to the breakthrough solution of the Kadison-Singer problem by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava (2015). In this paper we show a similar type of Lyapunov theorem for continuous frames on non-atomic measure spaces. In contrast with discrete frames, the proof of this result does not rely on the recent solution of the Kadison-Singer problem.

Let $A$ be a $C^*$-algebra acting on a Hilbert space $H$, $σ:A\to B(H)$ be a linear mapping and $d:A\to B(H)$ be a $σ$-derivation. Generalizing the celebrated theorem of Sakai, we prove that if $σ$ is a continuous $*$-mapping then $d$ is automatically continuous. In addition, we show the converse is true in the sense that if $d$ is a continuous $*-σ$-derivation then there exists a continuous linear mapping $Σ:A\to B(H)$ such that $d$ is $*-Σ$-derivation. The continuity of the so-called $*-(σ,τ)$-derivations is also discussed.
