Let l>k>2. Let the k-graph H^k_l be obtained from the complete 2-graph K_l^2 by enlarging each edge with a new set of k-2 vertices. Mubayi ["A hypergraph extension of Turan's theorem", to appear in J. Combin. Th. (B)] computed asymptotically the Turan function ex(n,H_l^k). Here we determine the exact value of ex(n,H_l^k) for all sufficiently large n, settling a conjecture of Mubayi.
For a fixed set of positive integers $R$, we say $\mathcal{H}$ is an $R$-uniform hypergraph, or $R$-graph, if the cardinality of each edge belongs to $R$. For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a Berge-$G$, denoted by $BG$, if there exists a bijection $f: E(G) \to E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for every $e \in E(G)$, $e \subseteq f(e)$. In this paper, we define a variant of Turán number in hypergraphs, namely the cover Turán number, denoted as $\hat{ex}_R(n, G)$, as the maximum number of edges in the shadow graph of a Berge-$G$ free $R$-graph on $n$ vertices. We show a general…
Given a family of $k$-hypergraphs $\mathcal{F}$, $ex(n,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges a $k$-hypergraph can have, knowing that said hypergraph has $n$ vertices but contains no copy of any hypergraph from $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. We prove that for every rational $r$ between $0$ and $k-1$, there exists some finite family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-hypergraphs for which $ex(n,\mathcal{F})=Θ(n^{k-r})$.
A non-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ consists of a vertex set $V$ and an edge set $E\subseteq 2^V$; the edges in $E$ are not required to all have the same cardinality. The set of all cardinalities of edges in $H$ is denoted by $R(H)$, the set of edge types. For a fixed hypergraph $H$, the Turán density $π(H)$ is defined to be $\lim_{n\to\infty}\max_{G_n}h_n(G_n)$, where the maximum is taken over all $H$-free hypergraphs $G_n$ on $n$ vertices satisfying $R(G_n)\subseteq R(H)$, and $h_n(G_n)$, the so called Lubell function, is the expected number of edges in $G_n$ hit by a random full chain. This …
P. Erdős [On extremal problems of graphs and generalized graphs, Israel Journal of Mathematics 2 (1964), 183-190] characterised those hypergraphs $F$ that have to appear in any sufficiently large hypergraph $H$ of positive density. We study related questions for $3$-uniform hypergraphs with the additional assumption that $H$ has to be uniformly dense with respect to vertex sets. In particular, we characterise those hypergraphs $F$ that are guaranteed to appear in large uniformly dense hypergraphs $H$ of positive density. We also review the case when the density of the induced subhypergraphs of…
The Turán number of an r-uniform hypergraph H is the maximum number of edges in any r-graph on n vertices which does not contain H as a subgraph. Let P_l^(r) denote the family of r-uniform loose paths on l edges, F(k,l) denote the family of hypergraphs consisting of k disjoint paths from P_l^(r), and P'_l^(r) denote an r-uniform linear path on l edges. We determine precisely ex_r(n;F(k,l)) and ex_r(n;k*P'_l^(r)), as well as the Turán numbers for forests of paths of differing lengths (whether these paths are loose or linear) when n is appropriately large dependent on k,l,r, for r>=3. Our result…
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $3$-uniform linear hypergraphs. The linear Turán number of $\mathcal F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a $3$-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices which contains no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph. In this paper we show that the linear Turán number of the five cycle $C_5$ (in the Berge sense) is $\frac{1}{3 \sqrt3}n^{3/2}$ asymptotically. We also show that the linear Turán number of the four cycle $C_4$ and $\{C_3, C_4\}$ are equal asmptotically, which is a strengthening of a theorem of Lazebnik and Verstraëte. We establish a connecti…
Fix a graph $F$. We say that a graph is {\it $F$-free} if it does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. The {\it Turán number} of $F$, denoted $\mathrm{ex}(n,F)$, is the maximum number of edges possible in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. The study of Turán numbers is a central problem in graph theory. The goal of this paper is to generalize a theorem of Lidický, Liu and Palmer [{\it Electron.\ J.\ of Combin.}\ {\bf 20} (2016)] that determines $\mathrm{ex}(n,F)$ for $F$ a forest of stars. In particular, we consider generalizations of the problem to three different well-studied hypergraph settings and in…
Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $r$-graphs, the Turán number of $\mathcal{F}$ for a given positive integer $N$, denoted by $ex(N,\mathcal{F})$, is the maximum number of edges of an $r$-graph on $N$ vertices that does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. For given $r\geq 3$, a complete $r$-uniform Berge-hypergraph, denoted by { ${K}_n^{(r)}$}, is an $r$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$ with the core sequence $v_{1}, v_{2}, \ldots ,v_{n}$ as the vertices and distinct edges $e_{ij},$ $1\leq i<j\leq n,$ where every $e_{ij}$ contains both $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$. Let $\mathcal{F}^{(r)}…
We consider the Turán problems of $2$-edge-colored graphs. A $2$-edge-colored graph $H=(V, E_r, E_b)$ is a triple consisting of the vertex set $V$, the set of red edges $E_r$ and the set of blue edges $E_b$ with $E_r$ and $E_b$ do not have to be disjoint. The Turán density $π(H)$ of $H$ is defined to be $\lim_{n\to\infty} \max_{G_n}h_n(G_n)$, where $G_n$ is chosen among all possible $2$-edge-colored graphs on $n$ vertices containing no $H$ as a sub-graph and $h_n(G_n)=(|E_r(G)|+|E_b(G)|)/{n\choose 2}$ is the formula to measure the edge density of $G_n$. We will determine the Turán densities of…
Let $F$ be a graph. We say that a hypergraph $H$ contains an induced Berge $F$ if the vertices of $F$ can be embedded to $H$ (e.g., $V(F)\subseteq V(H)$) and there exists an injective mapping $f$ from the edges of $F$ to the hyperedges of $H$ such that $f(xy) \cap V(F) = \{x,y\}$ holds for each edge $xy$ of $F$. In other words, $H$ contains $F$ as a trace. Let $ex_{r}(n,B_{ind} F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with no induced Berge $F$. Let $ex(n,K_r, F)$ denote the maximum number of $K_r$'s in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We show that these two Turán t…
This paper is motivated by the question of how global and dense restriction sets in results from extremal combinatorics can be replaced by less global and sparser ones. The result we consider here as an example is Turan's theorem, which deals with graphs G=([n],E) such that no member of the restriction set consisting of all r-tuples on [n] induces a copy of K_r. Firstly, we examine what happens when this restriction set is replaced just by all r-tuples touching a given m-element set. That is, we determine the maximal number of edges in an n-vertex such that no K_r hits a given vertex set. Seco…
A classical conjecture of Erdős and Sós asks to determine the Turán number of a tree. We consider variants of this problem in the settings of hypergraphs and multi-hypergraphs. In particular, for all $k$ and $r$, with $r \ge k (k-2)$, we show that any $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ with more than $\frac{n(k-1)}{r+1}$ hyperedges contains a Berge copy of any tree with $k$ edges different from the $k$-edge star. This bound is sharp when $r+1$ divides $n$ and for such values of $n$ we determine the extremal hypergraphs.

Let t be an integer, f(n) a function, and H a graph. Define the t-Ramsey-Turán number of H, RT_t(n, H, f(n)), to be the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex, H-free graph G where f(n) is larger than the maximum number of vertices in a $K_t$-free induced subgraph of G. Erdős, Hajnal, Simonovits, Sós, and Szemerédi posed several open questions about RT_t(n,K_s,o(n)), among them finding the minimum s such that $RT_t(n,K_{t+s},o(n)) = Ω(n^2)$, where it is easy to see that $RT_t(n,K_{t+1},o(n)) = o(n^2)$. In this paper, we answer this question by proving that $RT_t(n,K_{t+2},o(n)) = Ω(n^2)$; our …
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph and $F$ be a graph. We say $\mathcal{H}$ contains $F$ as a trace if there exists some set $S\subseteq V(\mathcal{H})$ such that $\mathcal{H}|_{S}:=\{E\cap S: E\in E(\mathcal{H})\}$ contains a subgraph isomorphic to $F.$ Let $ex_r(n,Tr(F))$ denote the maximum number of edges of an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ which does not contain $F$ as a trace. In this paper, we improve the lower bounds of $ex_r(n,Tr(F))$ when $F$ is a star, and give some optimal cases. We also improve the upper bound for the case when $\mathcal{H}$ is $3$-uni…
The extension of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is obtained from it by adding for every pair of vertices of $G$, which is not covered by an edge in $G$, an extra edge containing this pair and $r-2$ new vertices. Keevash and Sidorenko~ have previously determined Turán densities of two families of hypergraph extensions. We determine the Turán numbers for these families, using classical stability techniques and new tools introduced in our earlier paper.
The $r$-expansion $G^+$ of a graph $G$ is the $r$-uniform hypergraph obtained from $G$ by enlarging each edge of $G$ with a vertex subset of size $r-2$ disjoint from $V(G)$ such that distinct edges are enlarged by disjoint subsets. Let $ex_r(n,F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices not containing any copy of the $r$-uniform hypergraph $F$. Many problems in extremal set theory ask for the determination of $ex_r(n,G^+)$ for various graphs $G$. We survey these Turán-type problems, focusing on recent developments.
Given a positive integer $n$ and an $r$-uniform hypergraph (or $r$-graph for short) $F$, the Turan number $ex(n,F)$ of $F$ is the maximum number of edges in an $r$-graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. The extension $H^F $ of $F$ is obtained as follows: For each pair of vertices $v_i,v_j$ in $F$ not contained in an edge of $F$, we add a set $B_{ij}$ of $r-2$ new vertices and the edge $\{v_i,v_j\} \cup B_{ij}$, where the $B_{ij}$ 's are pairwise disjoint over all such pairs $\{i,j\}$. Let $K^r_p$ denote the complete $r$-graph on $p$ vertices. For all sufficiently large …
Let the crown $C_{13}$ be the linear $3$-graph on $9$ vertices $\{a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i\}$ with edges $$E = \{\{a,b,c\}, \{a, d,e\}, \{b, f, g\}, \{c, h,i\}\}.$$ Proving a conjecture of Gyárfás et. al., we show that for any crown-free linear $3$-graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, its number of edges satisfy $$\lvert E(G) \rvert \leq \frac{3(n - s)}{2}$$ where $s$ is the number of vertices in $G$ with degree at least $6$. This result, combined with previous work, essentially completes the determination of linear Turán number for linear $3$-graphs with at most $4$ edges.
Let $C^{2k}_r$ be the $2k$-uniform hypergraph obtained by letting $P_1,...,P_r$ be pairwise disjoint sets of size $k$ and taking as edges all sets $P_i \cup P_j$ with $i \neq j$. This can be thought of as the `$k$-expansion' of the complete graph $K_r$: each vertex has been replaced with a set of size $k$. We determine the exact Turan number of $C^{2k}_3$ and the corresponding extremal hypergraph, thus confirming a conjecture of Frankl. Sidorenko has given an upper bound of $(r-2) / (r-1)$ for the Turán density of $C^{2k}_r$ for any $r$, and a construction establishing a matching lower bound w…
Let $\mc{K}_{3,3}^3$ be the 3-graph with 15 vertices $\{x_i, y_i: 1 \le i \le 3\}$ and $\{z_{ij}: 1 \le i,j \le 3\}$, and 11 edges $\{x_1, x_2, x_3\}$, $\{y_1, y_2, y_3\}$ and $\{\{x_i, y_j, z_{ij}\}: 1 \le i,j \le 3\}$. We show that for large $n$, the unique largest $\mc{K}_{3,3}^3$-free 3-graph on $n$ vertices is a balanced blow-up of the complete 3-graph on 5 vertices. Our proof uses the stability method and a result on lagrangians of intersecting families that has independent interest.
Confirming a conjecture of Vera T. Sós in a very strong sense, we give a complete solution to Turán's hypergraph problem for the Fano plane. That is we prove for $n\ge 8$ that among all $3$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices not containing the Fano plane there is indeed exactly one whose number of edges is maximal, namely the balanced, complete, bipartite hypergraph. Moreover, for $n=7$ there is exactly one other extremal configuration with the same number of edges: the hypergraph arising from a clique of order $7$ by removing all five edges containing a fixed pair of vertices. For sufficient…
Let $r\ge 3$. Given an $r$-graph $H$, the minimum codegree $δ_{r-1}(H)$ is the largest integer $t$ such that every $(r-1)$-subset of $V(H)$ is contained in at least $t$ edges of $H$. Given an $r$-graph $F$, the codegree Turán density $γ(F)$ is the smallest $γ>0$ such that every $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with $δ_{r-1}(H)\ge (γ+ o(1))n$ contains $F$ as a subhypergraph. Using results on the independence number of hypergraphs, we show that there are constants $c_1, c_2>0$ depending only on $r$ such that \[ 1 - c_2 \frac{\ln t}{t^{r-1}} \le γ(K_t^r) \le 1 - c_1 \frac{\ln t}{t^{r-1}}, \] where $K_t^…
For two graphs $F$ and $H$, the relative Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(H,F)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free subgraph of $H$. Foucaud, Krivelevich, and Perarnau \cite{FKP} and Perarnau and Reed \cite{PR} studied these quantities as a function of the maximum degree of $H$. In this paper, we study a generalization for uniform hypergraphs. If $F$ is a complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph with parts of sizes $s_1,s_2,\dots,s_r$ with each $s_{i + 1}$ sufficiently large relative to $s_i$, then with $1/β= \sum_{i = 2}^r \prod_{j = 1}^{i - 1} s_j$ we prove that for any $r$-uniform hyp…
Given a $k$-graph $H$ a complete blow-up of $H$ is a $k$-graph $\hat{H}$ formed by replacing each $v\in V(H)$ by a non-empty vertex class $A_v$ and then inserting all edges between any $k$ vertex classes corresponding to an edge of $H$. Given a subgraph $G\subseteq \hat{H}$ and an edge $e\in E(H)$ we define the density $d_e(G)$ to be the proportion of edges present in $G$ between the classes corresponding to $e$. The density Turán problem for $H$ asks: determine the minimal value $d_{crit}(H)$ such that any subgraph $G\subseteq \hat{H}$ satisfying $d_e(G)> d_{crit}(H)$ for every $e\in E(H)$ co…
A remarkable connection between the order of a maximum clique and the Lagrangian of a graph was established by Motzkin and Straus in 1965. This connection and its extensions were applied in Turán problems of graphs and uniform hypergraphs. Very recently, the study of Turán densities of non-uniform hypergraphs has been motivated by extremal poset problems. In this paper, we give some Motzkin-Straus type results for non-uniform hypergraphs.
An $r$-graph is an $r$-uniform hypergraph tree (or $r$-tree) if its edges can be ordered as $E_1,\ldots, E_m$ such that $\forall i>1 \, \exists α(i)<i$ such that $E_i\cap (\bigcup_{j=1}^{i-1} E_j)\subseteq E_{α(i)}$. The Turán number $ex(n,{\cal H})$ of an $r$-graph ${\cal H}$ is the largest size of an $n$-vertex $r$-graph that does not contain ${\cal H}$. A cross-cut of ${\cal H}$ is a set of vertices in ${\cal H}$ that contains exactly one vertex of each edge of ${\cal H}$. The cross-cut number $σ({\cal H})$ of ${\cal H}$ is the minimum size of a cross-cut of ${\cal H}$. We show that for a l…
We describe a method that we believe may be foundational for a comprehensive theory of generalised Turan problems. The cornerstone of our approach is a quasirandom counting lemma for quasirandom hypergraphs, which extends the standard counting lemma by not only counting copies of a particular configuration but also showing that these copies are evenly distributed. We demonstrate the power of the method by proving a conjecture of Mubayi on the codegree threshold of the Fano plane, that any 3-graph on n vertices for which every pair of vertices is contained in more than n/2 edges must contain a …
Write $K^{(k)}_{n}$ for the complete $k$-graph on $n$ vertices. For $2 \leq k \leq g < r$ integers, let $π\left(n, K^{(k)}_{g}, K^{(k)}_r\right)$ be the maximum density of $K^{(k)}_{g}$ in $n$ vertex $K^{(k)}_{r}$-free $k$-graphs. The main contribution of this paper is the upper bound: $π\left(n, K^{(k)}_{g}, K^{(k)}_r\right) \leq \left(1 + O\left(n^{-1}\right) \right)\prod_{m=k}^{g} \left(1 - \frac{\binom{m-1}{k-1}}{\binom{r-1}{k-1}} \right).$ The graph case ($k=2$) is the first known generalized Turán question, investigated by Erdős. The $k=g$ case is the hypergraph Turán problem where the b…
Given a family of $r$-uniform hypergraphs ${\cal F}$ (or $r$-graphs for brevity), the Turán number $ex(n,{\cal F})$ of ${\cal F}$ is the maximum number of edges in an $r$-graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain any member of ${\cal F}$. A pair $\{u,v\}$ is covered in a hypergraph $G$ if some edge of $G$ contains $\{u,v\}$. Given an $r$-graph $F$ and a positive integer $p\geq n(F)$, let $H^F_p$ denote the $r$-graph obtained as follows. Label the vertices of $F$ as $v_1,\ldots, v_{n(F)}$. Add new vertices $v_{n(F)+1},\ldots, v_p$. For each pair of vertices $v_i,v_j$ not covered in $F$, add a…
Let $F$ be a graph. We say that a hypergraph $H$ is a {\it Berge}-$F$ if there is a bijection $f : E(F) \rightarrow E(H )$ such that $e \subseteq f(e)$ for every $e \in E(F)$. Note that Berge-$F$ actually denotes a class of hypergraphs. The maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with no subhypergraph isomorphic to any Berge-$F$ is denoted $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$. In this paper we establish new upper and lower bounds on $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$ for general graphs $F$, and investigate connections between $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$ and other recently studied extremal functions…
A $k$-uniform linear path of length $\ell$, denoted by $P^{(k)}_\ell$, is a family of $k$-sets $\{F_1,..., F_\ell\}$ such that $|F_i\cap F_{i+1}|=1$ for each $i$ and $F_i\cap F_j=\emptyset$ whenever $|i-j|>1$. Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ and a positive integer $n$, the {\it $k$-uniform hypergraph Turán number} of $H$, denoted by $\ex_k(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\cF$ on $n$ vertices that does not contain $H$ as a subhypergraph. With an intensive use of the delta-system method, we determine $\ex_k(n,P^{(k)}_\ell)$ exactly for all fixed $\ell\geq 1,…
For a graph $F$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is a Berge copy of $F$ (or a Berge-$F$ in short), if there is a bijection $f : E(F) \rightarrow E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for each $e \in E(F)$ we have $e \subset f(e)$. A hypergraph is Berge-$F$-free if it does not contain a Berge copy of $F$. We denote the maximum number of hyperedges in an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform Berge-$F$-free hypergraph by $\mathrm{ex}_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F).$ In this paper we prove two general lemmas concerning the maximum size of a Berge-$F$-free hypergraph and use them to establish new results and improve several old results. I…
An $r$-uniform hypergraph is called $t$-cancellative if for any $t+2$ distinct edges $A_1,\ldots,A_t,B,C$, it holds that $(\cup_{i=1}^t A_i)\cup B\neq (\cup_{i=1}^t A_i)\cup C$. It is called $t$-union-free if for any two distinct subsets $\mathcal{A},\mathcal{B}$, each consisting of at most $t$ edges, it holds that $\cup_{A\in\mathcal{A}} A\neq \cup_{B\in\mathcal{B}} B$. Let $C_t(n,r)$ (resp. $U_t(n,r)$) denote the maximum number of edges of a $t$-cancellative (resp. $t$-union-free) $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices. Among other results, we show that for fixed $r\ge 3,t\ge 3$ and $n\right…
A hypergraph is linear if any two of its edges intersect in at most one vertex. The Sail (or $3$-fan) $F^3$ is the $3$-uniform linear hypergraph consisting of $3$ edges $f_1, f_2, f_3$ pairwise intersecting in the same vertex $v$ and an additional edge $g$ intersecting all $f_i$ in a vertex different from $v$. The linear Turán number $ex_{lin}(n, F^3)$ is the maximum number of edges in a $3$-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices that does not contain a copy of $F^3$. Füredi and Gyárfás proved that if $n = 3k$, then $ex_{lin}(n, F^3) = k^2$ and the only extremal hypergraphs in this case are…
For two $r$-graphs $\mathcal{T}$ and $\mathcal{H}$, let $\text{ex}_{r}(n,\mathcal{T},\mathcal{H})$ be the maximum number of copies of $\mathcal{T}$ in an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free $r$-graph. The determination of Turán number $\text{ex}_{r}(n,\mathcal{T},\mathcal{H})$ has become the fundamental core problem in extremal graph theory ever since the pioneering work Turán's Theorem was published in $1941$. Although we have some rich results for the simple graph case, only sporadic results have been known for the hypergraph Turán problems. In this paper, we mainly focus on the function $\text{ex…
A hypergraph is linear if any two edges intersect in at most one vertex. For a fixed $k$-uniform family ${\cal{F}}$ of hypergraphs, the linear Turán number ${\rm ex}_{\rm lin}(n,{\cal{F}})$ is the maximum number of edges in a $k$-uniform linear hypergraph $\mathcal H$ on $n$ vertices that does not contain any member of ${\cal{F}}$ as a subhypergraph. For $k\ge 2$ the $k$-fan $F^k$ is the $k$-uniform linear hypergraph having $k$ edges $f_1,\dots,f_k$ pairwise intersecting in the same vertex $v$ and an additional edge $g$ intersecting all $f_i$ in a vertex different from $v$. We prove the follow…
In this paper we define a class of combinatorial structures the instances of which can each be thought of as a model of directed hypergraphs in some way. Each of these models is uniform in that all edges have the same internal structure, and each is simple in that no loops or multiedges are allowed. We generalize the concepts of Turan density, blowup density, and jumps to this class and show that many basic extremal results extend naturally in this new setting. In particular, we show that supersaturation holds, the blowup of a generalized directed hypergraph (GDH) has the same Turan density as…
