Homotopy formulas for cyclic groups acting on rings

The positive cohomology groups of a finite group acting on a ring vanish when the ring has a norm-one element. In this note we give explicit homotopies on the level of cochains when the group is cyclic, which allows us to express any cocycle of a cyclic group as the coboundary of an explicit cochain. The formulas in this note are closely related to the effective problems considered in previous joint work with Eli Aljadeff.

A new look at the Julg-Valette homotopy for groups acting on trees

We propose a new look at the Julg-Valette theorem on K-theoretic amenability for groups operating on trees. The main tool is a generalization of a construction of uniformly bounded representations of the free groups due to Pytlik and Szwarc.

2-blocks with an abelian defect group and a freely acting cyclic inertial quotient

We study blocks with an abelian defect group and a cyclic inertial quotient acting freely but not transitively. We prove that when p=2, such blocks are inertial, i.e. basic Morita equivalent to their Brauer correspondent. Together with a result of the second author on Singer cycle actions on homocyclic defect groups, this completes the classification of 2-blocks with a cyclic inertial quotient acting freely on an abelian defect group.

Bredon cohomological dimensions for groups acting on CAT(0)-spaces

Let G be a group acting isometrically with discrete orbits on a separable complete CAT(0)-space of bounded topological dimension. Under certain conditions, we give upper bounds for the Bredon cohomological dimension of G for the families of finite and virtually cyclic subgroups. As an application, we prove that the mapping class group of any closed, connected, and orientable surface of genus g greater than 1 admits a (9g-8)-dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers. On knot groups acting on trees

A finitely generated group $G$ acting on a tree with infinite cyclic edge and vertex stabilizers is called a generalized Baumslag--Solitar group ($GBS$ group). We prove that a 1-knot group $G$ is $GBS$ group iff $G$ is a torus-knot group and describe all n-knot GBS groups for $n\geqslant 3$.

Groups acting on CAT(0) cube complexes

We show that groups satisfying Kazhdan's property (T) have no unbounded actions on finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complexes, and deduce that there is a locally CAT(-1) Riemannian manifold which is not homotopy equivalent to any finite dimensional, locally CAT(0) cube complex.

Groups acting on trees and the Eilenberg-Ganea problem for families

We construct new examples of groups with cohomological dimension 2 and geometric dimension 3 with respect to the families of finite subgroups, virtually abelian groups of bounded rank, and the family of virtually poly-cyclic subgroups. Our main ingredients are the examples constructed by Brady-Leary-Nucinckis and Fluch-Leary, and Bass-Serre theory.

Some results related to finiteness properties of groups for families of subgroups

For a group $G$ we consider the classifying space $E_{\mathcal{VC}yc}(G)$ for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups. We show that an Artin group admits a finite model for $E_{\mathcal{VC}yc}(G)$ if and only if it is virtually cyclic. This solves a conjecture of Juan-Pineda and Leary and a question of Lück-Reich-Rognes-Varisco for Artin groups. Free cyclic actions on surfaces and the Borsuk-Ulam theorem

Let $M$ and $N$ be topological spaces, let $G$ be a group, and let $τ\colon\thinspace G \times M \to M$ be a proper free action of $G$. In this paper, we define a Borsuk-Ulam-type property for homotopy classes of maps from $M$ to $N$ with respect to the pair $(G,τ)$ that generalises the classical antipodal Borsuk-Ulam theorem of maps from the $n$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}^n$. A Classification of the Stable Type of $BG$

We give a classification of the $p$--local stable homotopy type of $BG$, where $G$ is a finite group, in purely algebraic terms. $BG$ is determined by conjugacy classes of homomorphisms from $p$--groups into $G$. This classification greatly simplifies if $G$ has a normal Sylow $p$--subgroup; the stable homotopy types then depends only on the Weyl group of the Sylow $p$--subgroup. Limit groups and groups acting freely on R^n-trees

We give a simple proof of the finite presentation of Sela's limit groups by using free actions on R^n-trees. We first prove that Sela's limit groups do have a free action on an R^n-tree. We then prove that a finitely generated group having a free action on an R^n-tree can be obtained from free abelian groups and surface groups by a finite sequence of free products and amalgamations over cyclic groups. Acylindrical accessibility for groups acting on $\mathbf R$-trees

We prove an acylindrical accessibility theorem for finitely generated groups acting on $\mathbf R$-trees. Namely, we show that if $G$ is a freely indecomposable non-cyclic $k$-generated group acting minimally and $M$-acylindrically on an $\mathbf R$-tree $X$ then for any $ε>0$ there is a finite subtree $Y_ε\subseteq X$ of measure at most $2M(k-1)+ε$ such that $GY_ε=X$. Big free groups acting on $Λ$-trees

The set of homotopy classes of based paths in the Hawaiian earring has a natural $\mathbb R$-tree structure, but under that metric the action by the fundamental group is not by isometries. Following a suggestion by Cannon and Conner, this paper defines an $\mathbb R^ω$-metric that does admit for an isometric action by the fundamental group. Finite group actions and cyclic branched covers of knots in $\mathbf{S}^3$

We show that a hyperbolic $3$-manifold can be the cyclic branched cover of at most fifteen knots in $\mathbf{S}^3$. This is a consequence of a general result about finite groups of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms acting on $3$-manifolds. A similar, although weaker, result holds for arbitrary irreducible $3$-manifolds: an irreducible $3$-manifold can be the cyclic branched cover of odd prime order of at most six knots in $\mathbf{S}^3$.
