This is an introduction to the subject of the differential topology of the space of smooth loops in a finite dimensional manifold. It began as the background notes to a series of seminars given at NTNU and subsequently at Sheffield. I am posting them in the hope that they will be useful to people wishing to know a little about the basics of the subject. I have tried to make them readable by anyone with a good grounding in finite dimensional differential topology. Any comments and suggestions for improvement will be very welcome.
The topics covered are: the smooth structure of the space of smooth loops; constructions involving vector bundles; submanifolds and tubular neighbourhoods; and a short introduction to the geometry and semi-infinite structure of loop spaces.
Survey article on loop groups and their representations, following a course of three lectures held at the summer school "algebraic groups" at the Georg-August-Universitaet zu Goettingen, June 27--July 13, 2005. We discuss loop groups, their central extensions, and positive energy representations.
In this note, we discuss the interactions between differential topology and isoparametric foliations, surveying some recent progress and open problems.
In this paper we introduce an equivariant extension of the Chern-Simons form, associated to a path of connections on a bundle over a manifold M, to the free loop space LM, and show it determines an equivalence relation on the set of connections on a bundle. We use this to define a ring, loop differential K-theory of M, in much the same way that differential K-theory can be defined using the Chern-Simons form [SS]. We show loop differential K-theory yields a refinement of differential K-theory, and in particular incorporates holonomy information into its classes. Additionally, loop differential…
Let M be a closed Riemannian manifold. We extend the product of Goresky-Hingston, on the cohomology of the free loop space of M relative to the constant loops, to a nonrelative product. It is graded associative and commutative, and compatible with the length filtration on the loop space, like the original product. We prove the following new geometric property of the dual homology coproduct: the nonvanishing of the k-th iterate of the coproduct on a homology class ensures the existence of a loop with a (k+1)-fold self-intersection in every representative of the class. For spheres and projective…
This note exposes the differential topology and geometry underlying some of the basic phenomena of optimal transportation. It surveys basic questions concerning Monge maps and Kantorovich measures: existence and regularity of the former, uniqueness of the latter, and estimates for the dimension of its support, as well as the associated linear programming duality. It shows the answers to these questions concern the differential geometry and topology of the chosen transportation cost. It also establishes new connections --- some heuristic and others rigorous --- based on the properties of the cr…
In this paper we study a subspace of the space of Legendrian loops and we show that the injection of this space into the full loop space is an S1-equivariant homotopy equivalence. This space can be also seen as the space of zero Maslov index Legendrian loops and it shows up as a suitable space of variations in contact form geometry.
Taking an elementary and straightforward approach, we develop the concept of a regular value for a smooth map f: O -> P between smooth orbifolds O and P. We show that Sard's theorem holds and that the inverse image of a regular value is a smooth full suborbifold of O. We also study some constraints that the existence of a smooth orbifold map imposes on local isotropy groups. As an application, we prove a Borsuk no retraction theorem for compact orbifolds with boundary and some obstructions to the existence of real-valued orbifold maps from local model orbifold charts.
The purpose of this thesis is to study classical combinatorial objects, such as polytopes, polytopal complexes, and subspace arrangements, using tools that have been developed in combinatorial topology, especially those tools developed in connection with (discrete) differential geometry, geometric group theory and low-dimensional topology.
This article presents a new and more elementary proof of the main Seiberg-Witten-based obstruction to the existence of Einstein metrics on smooth compact 4-manifolds. It also introduces a new smooth manifold invariant which conveniently encapsulates those aspects of Seiberg-Witten theory most relevant to the study of Riemannian variational problems on 4-manifolds.
This manuscript collects three independent works: arXiv:1902.03805, arXiv:1906.04444, with Antonio Lerario and arXiv:2103.10853, together with some additional results, observations, examples and comments, some of which were taken up in the subsequent work arxiv:2010.14553 (with Antonio Lerario). The topic discussed in this thesis are at the crossroad of Differential Topology and Random Geometry. The common thread of these works is the study of topological and geometric properties of random smooth maps. The first chapter contains the motivations and the main results of the thesis. In particular…
We show that there exist smooth, simply connected, four-dimensional spin manifolds which do not admit Einstein metrics, but nonetheless satisfy the strict Hitchin-Thorpe inequality. Our construction makes use of the Bauer/Furuta cohomotopy refinement of the Seiberg-Witten invariant, in conjunction with curvature estimates previously proved by the second author. These methods also easily allow one to construct examples of topological 4-manifolds which admit an Einstein metric for one smooth structure, but which have infinitely many other smooth structures for which no Einstein metric can exist.
We first show that, for a fixed locally compact manifold $N,$ the space $L^2(S^1,N)$ has not the homotopy type odf the classical loop space $C^\infty(S^1,N),$ by two theorems: - the inclusion $C^\infty(S^1,N) \subset L^2(S^1,N)$ is null homotopic if $N $ is connected, - the space $L^2(S^1,N)$ is contractible if $N$ is compact and connected. After this first remark, we show that the spaces $H^s(S^1,N)$ carry a natural structure of Frölicher space, equipped with a Riemannian metric, which motivates the definition of Riemannian Frölicher space.
Quantization needs evaluation of all of states of a quantized object rather than its stationary states with respect to its energy. In this paper, we have investigated moduli $\CMeP$ of a quantized elastica, a quantized loop with an energy functional associated with the Schwarz derivative, on a Riemann sphere $\PP$. Then it is proved that its moduli space is decomposed to a set of equivalent classes determined by flows obeying the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy which conserve the energy. Since the flow obeying the KdV hierarchy has a natural topology, it induces topology in the moduli space …
A survey of real differential geometry and loop theory is given in order to introduce the construction of an analytic loop associated to p-adic differential manifold.
The first part of this article is a short and selective survey of developments in differential and algebraic geometry from the 1980's involving enumerative questions and nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. In the second part we discuss possible extensions of these ideas to structures on 4-manifolds, in particular to complex structures on surfaces of general type
Motivated by numerous questions in random geometry, given a smooth manifold $M$, we approach a systematic study of the differential topology of Gaussian random fields (GRF) $X:M\to \mathbb{R}^k$, that we interpret as random variables with values in $\mathcal{C}^r(M, \mathbb{R}^k)$, inducing on it a Gaussian measure. When the latter is given the weak Whitney topology, the convergence in law of $X$ allows to compute the limit probability of certain events in terms of the probability distribution of the limit. This is true, in particular, for the events of a geometric or topological nature, like:…
The subtle interplay between local and global charges for topological semimetals exactly parallels that for singular vector fields. Part of this story is the relationship between cohomological semimetal invariants, Euler structures, and ambiguities in the torsion of manifolds. Dually, a topological semimetal can be represented by Euler chains from which its surface Fermi arc connectivity can be deduced. These dual pictures, and the link to topological invariants of insulators, are organised using geometric exact sequences. We go beyond Dirac-type Hamiltonians and introduce new classes of semim…
This paper investigates the question of which smooth compact 4-manifolds admit Riemannian metrics that minimize the L2-norm of the curvature tensor. Metrics with this property are called OPTIMAL; Einstein metrics and scalar-flat anti-self-dual metrics provide us with two interesting classes of examples. Using twistor methods, optimal metrics of the second type are constructed on the connected sums kCP_2 for k > 5. However, related constructions also show that large classes of simply connected 4-manifolds do not admit any optimal metrics at all. Interestingly, the difference between existence a…
