Formulas for stable differentiation of piecewise-smooth functions are given. The data are noisy values of these functions. The locations of discontinuity points and the sizes of the jumps across these points are not assumed known, but found stably from the noisy data.
Signals and images with discontinuities appear in many problems in such diverse areas as biology, medicine, mechanics, and electrical engineering. The concrete data are often discrete, indirect and noisy measurements of some quantities describing the signal under consideration. A frequent task is to find the segments of the signal or image which corresponds to finding the discontinuities or jumps in the data. Methods based on minimizing the piecewise constant Mumford-Shah functional -- whose discretized version is known as Potts functional -- are advantageous in this scenario, in particular, i…
The aim of this article is to study the role of piecewise implementation of Padé-Chebyshev type approximation in minimising Gibbs phenomena in approximating piecewise smooth functions. A piecewise Padé-Chebyshev type (PiPCT) algorithm is proposed and an $L^1$-error estimate for at most continuous functions is obtained using a decay property of the Chebyshev coefficients. An advantage of the PiPCT approximation is that we do not need to have an {\it a prior} knowledge of the positions and the types of singularities present in the function. Further, an adaptive piecewise Padé-Chebyshev type (APi…
An arbitrarily high order unfitted finite element method for elliptic interface problems with automatic mesh generation, Part II. Piecewise-smooth interfaces
A piecewise Padé-Chebyshev type (PiPCT) approximation method is proposed to minimize the Gibbs phenomenon in approximating piecewise smooth functions. A theorem on $L^1$-error estimate is proved for sufficiently smooth functions using a decay property of the Chebyshev coefficients. Numerical experiments are performed to show that the PiPCT method accurately captures isolated singularities of a function without using the positions and the types of singularities. Further, an adaptive partition approach to the PiPCT method is developed (referred to as the APiPCT method) to achieve the required ac…
In this paper we compute the Hausdorff distance between sets of continuous curves and sets of piecewise constant or linear discretizations. These sets are Sobolev balls given by the continuous or discrete $L^p$-norm of the derivatives. We detail the suitable discretization or smoothing procedure which are preservative in the sense of these norms. Finally we exhibit the link between Eulerian numbers and the uniformly space knots B-spline used for smoothing.
We introduce conservative integrators for long term integration of piecewise smooth systems with transversal dynamics and piecewise smooth conserved quantities. In essence, for a piecewise dynamical system with piecewise defined conserved quantities such that its trajectories cross transversally to its interface, we combine Mannshardt's transition scheme and the Discrete Multiplier Method to obtain conservative integrators capable of preserving conserved quantities up to machine precision and accuracy order. We prove that the order of accuracy of the conservative integrators is preserved after…
A Frontal-Delaunay refinement algorithm for mesh generation in piecewise smooth domains is described. Built using a restricted Delaunay framework, this new algorithm combines a number of novel features, including: (i) an unweighted, conforming restricted Delaunay representation for domains specified as a (non-manifold) collection of piecewise smooth surface patches and curve segments, (ii) a protection strategy for domains containing curve segments that subtend sharply acute angles, and (iii) a new class of off-centre refinement rules designed to achieve high-quality point-placement along embe…
This paper presents a new approach to the detection of discontinuities in the n-th derivative of observational data. This is achieved by performing two polynomial approximations at each interstitial point. The polynomials are coupled by constraining their coefficients to ensure continuity of the model up to the (n-1)-th derivative; while yielding an estimate for the discontinuity of the n-th derivative. The coefficients of the polynomials correspond directly to the derivatives of the approximations at the interstitial points through the prudent selection of a common coordinate system. The appr…
This paper investigates the approximation properties of deep neural networks with piecewise-polynomial activation functions. We derive the required depth, width, and sparsity of a deep neural network to approximate any Hölder smooth function up to a given approximation error in Hölder norms in such a way that all weights of this neural network are bounded by $1$. The latter feature is essential to control generalization errors in many statistical and machine learning applications.
