In this paper we prove some approximation results for biLipschitz maps in the Heisenberg group. Namely, we show that a biLipschitz map with biLipschitz constant close to one can be pointwise approximated, quantitatively on any fixed ball, by an isometry. This leds to an approximation in BMO norm for the map's Pansu derivative. We also prove that a global quasigeodesic can be approximated by a geodesic in any fixed segment.
We study isometric embeddings of a Euclidean space or a Heisenberg group into a higher dimensional Heisenberg group, where both the source and target space are equipped with an arbitrary left-invariant homogeneous distance that is not necessarily sub-Riemannian. We show that if all infinite geodesics in the target are straight lines, then such an embedding must be a homogeneous homomorphism. We discuss a necessary and certain sufficient conditions for the target space to have this `geodesic linearity property', and we provide various examples.
We show that for every quasi-isometric map from a Hadamard manifold of pinched negative curvature to a locally compact, Gromov hyperbolic, ${\rm CAT}(0)$-space there exists an energy minimizing harmonic map at finite distance. This harmonic map is moreover Lipschitz. This generalizes a recent result of Benoist-Hulin.
Let $\H^n$ be the Heisenberg group of topological dimension $2n+1$. We prove that if $n$ is odd, the pair of metric spaces $(\H^n, \H^n)$ does not have the Lipschitz extension property.
We show that a map with Hölder exponent bigger than $1/2$ from a quasi-convex metric space with vanishing first Lipschitz homology into the Sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group factors through a tree. In particular, if the domain contains a disk, such a map can't be injective. This gives an answer to a question of Gromov for the simplest nontrivial case. The same tools allow to improve on a result of Borisov and it is shown that an isometric immersion of class $C^{1,α}$ of a Riemannian surface with positive Gauss curvature into $\mathbb{R}^3$ has bounded extrinsic curvature if $α> 1/2$.
Lipschitz and horizontal maps from an $n$-dimensional space into the $(2n+1)$-dimensional Heisenberg group $\H^n$ are abundant, while maps from higher-dimensional spaces are much more restricted. DeJarnette-Hajłasz-Lukyanenko-Tyson constructed horizontal maps from $S^k$ to $\H^n$ which factor through $n$-spheres and showed that these maps have no smooth horizontal fillings. In this paper, however, we build on an example of Kaufman to show that these maps sometimes have Lipschitz fillings. This shows that the Lipschitz and the smooth horizontal homotopy groups of a space may differ. Conversely,…
We prove a quantitative bi-Lipschitz nonembedding theorem for the Heisenberg group with its Carnot-Carathéodory metric and apply it to give a lower bound on the integrality gap of the Goemans-Linial semidefinite relaxation of the Sparsest Cut problem.
We investigate metric properties of level sets of horizontally differentiable maps defined on the first Heisenberg group $(\Bbb{H}^1,d_{cc})$ equipped with the standard sub-Riemannian structure. In particular, we present an exhaustive analysis in a new case of a map $F\in C^1_H(\Bbb{H}^1, \Bbb{R}^2)$ with surjective horizontal differential (an analogue of the classical implicit function theorem). Among other results, we show that a level set of such map is locally a simple curve of Hausdorff sub-Riemannian dimension 2, but, surprisingly, in general its two-dimensional Hausdorff measure can be …
The Heisenberg groups are examples of sub-Riemannian manifolds homeomorphic, but not diffeomorphic to the Euclidean space. Their metric is derived from curves which are only allowed to move in so-called horizontal directions. We report on some recent progress in the Analysis of the Hölder topology of the Heisenberg group, some related and some unrelated to density questions for Sobolev maps into the Heisenberg group. In particular we describe the main ideas behind a result by Hajłasz, Mirra, and the author regarding Gromov's conjecture, which is based on the linking number. We do not prove or …
We focus our attention on the notion of intrinsic Lipschitz graphs, inside a subclass of Carnot groups of step 2 which includes a corank 1 Carnot groups (and so the Heisenberg groups), Free groups of step 2 and the complexified Heisenberg group. More precisely, we prove the equivalence between intrinsic Lipschitz map and a weak solution to a suitable non linear first order PDE system, which generalizes Lagrangian solution in the context of Heisenberg groups.
We define Hardy spaces $H^p$, $0<p<\infty$, for quasiconformal mappings on the Korányi unit ball $B$ in the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$. Our definition is stated in terms of the Heisenberg polar coordinates introduced by Korányi and Reimann, and Balogh and Tyson. First, we prove the existence of $p_0(K)>0$ such that every $K$-quasiconformal map $f:B \to f(B) \subset \mathbb{H}^1$ belongs to $H^p$ for all $0<p<p_0(K)$. Second, we give two equivalent conditions for the $H^p$ membership of a quasiconformal map $f$, one in terms of the radial limits of $f$, and one using a nontangential …
In this paper we study certain groups of bilipschitz maps of the boundary minus a point of a negatively curved space that is an abelian-by-cyclic solvable Lie group, where the extension is given by a matrix whose eigenvalues all lie outside of the unit circle. The case where the extension matrix is diagonal was previously studied by Dymarz. As an application, combined with work of Eskin-Fisher-Whyte and Peng, we provide the last steps in the proof of quasi-isometric rigidity for a class of lattices in solvable Lie groups.
We give a new approach to the infinitesimal structure of Lipschitz maps into L^1. As a first application, we give an alternative proof of the main theorem from an earlier paper, that the Heisenberg group does not admit a bi-Lipschitz embedding in L^1. The proof uses the metric differentiation theorem of Pauls and the cut metric decomposition to reduce the nonembedding argument to a classification of monotone subsets of the Heisenberg group.
In this paper we show that if $Y=N \times \mathbb{Q}_m$ is a metric space where $N$ is a Carnot group endowed with the Carnot-Caratheodory metric then any quasisymmetric map of $Y$ is actually bilipschitz. The key observation is that $Y$ is the parabolic visual boundary of a mixed type locally compact amenable hyperbolic group. The same results also hold for a larger class of nilpotent Lie groups $N$. As part of the proof we also obtain partial quasi-isometric rigidity results for mixed type locally compact amenable hyperbolic groups. Finally we prove a rigidity result for uniform subgroups of…
This paper studies the geometry of bilipschitz maps $f \colon \mathbb{W} \to \mathbb{H}$, where $\mathbb{H}$ is the first Heisenberg group, and $\mathbb{W} \subset \mathbb{H}$ is a vertical subgroup of co-dimension $1$. The images $f(\mathbb{W})$ of such maps are called Rickman rugs in the Heisenberg group. The main theorem states that a Rickman rug in the Heisenberg group admits a corona decomposition by intrinsic bilipschitz graphs. As a corollary, Rickman rugs are countably rectifiable by intrinsic bilipschitz graphs. Here, an intrinsic bilipschitz graph is an intrinsic Lipschitz graph, whi…
We introduce novel equations, in the spirit of rough path theory, that parametrize level sets of intrinsically regular maps on the Heisenberg group with values in $\mathbb{R}^2$. These equations can be seen as a sub-Riemannian counterpart to classical ODEs arising from the implicit function theorem. We show that they enjoy all the natural well-posedness properties, thus allowing for a "good calculus" on nonsmooth level sets. We apply these results to prove an area formula for the intrinsic measure of level sets, along with the corresponding coarea formula.
This is one of a series of papers examining the interplay between differentiation theory for Lipschitz maps, X-->V, and bi-Lipschitz nonembeddability, where X is a metric measure space and V is a Banach space. Here, we consider the case V=L^1 where differentiability fails. We establish another kind of differentiability for certain X, including R^n and H, the Heisenberg group with its Carnot-Cartheodory metric. It follows that H does not bi-Lipschitz embed into L^1, as conjectured by J. Lee and A. Naor. When combined with their work, this provides a natural counter example to the Goemans-Linial…
