A proper vertex of a rooted tree with totally ordered vertices is a vertex that is less than all its proper descendants. We count several kinds of labeled rooted trees and forests by the number of proper vertices. Our results are all expressed in terms of the polynomials P_n(a,b,c)= c(a+(n-1)b+c)(2a+(n-2)b+c)...((n-1)a+b+c) which reduce to (n+1)^{n-1} for a=b=c=1.
Our study of proper vertices was motivated by A. Postnikov's hook length formula for binary trees (arXiv:math.CO/0507163), which was also proved by W. Y. C. Chen and L. L. M. Yang (arXiv:math.CO/0507163) and generalized by R. R. X. Du and F. Liu (arXiv:math.CO/0501147). Our approach gives a new proof of Du and Liu's results and gives new hook length formulas.
We also find an interpretation of the polynomials P_n(a,b,c) in terms of parking functions: we count parking functions according to the number of cars that park in their preferred parking spaces.
We study Hartnell's firefighter problem on infinite trees and characterise the branching number in terms of the firefighting game. Using our results about trees, we give a partial answer to a question of Martínez-Pedroza concerning firefighting on Cayley graphs.
Cayley's 1875 enumerations of centered and bicentered alkanes (unlabeled trees of valency at most 4) are corrected and extended -- possibly for the first time in 124 years.
We give a short proof of Cayley's tree formula for counting the number of different labeled trees on $n$ vertices. The following nonlinear recursive relation for the number of labeled trees on $n$ vertices is deduced from a combinatorial argument, $$ T_n = \frac{n}{2} \sum_{k=0}^{n-2} \left ( \begin {array} {c} n-2 \\ k \end {array} \right ) T_{k+1} T_{n-k-1}; \ \ for \ n > 1 \ and \ T_1 = 1, $$ and then it is proved that $T_n = n^{n-2}$, which gives yet another proof of the celebrated Cayley's tree formula.
Recently Féray, Goulden and Lascoux gave a proof of a new hook summation formula for unordered increasing trees by means of a generalization of the Prüfer code for labelled trees and posed the problem of finding a bijection between weighted increasing trees and Cayley trees. We give such a bijection, providing an answer to the problem posed by Féray, Goulden and Lascoux as well as showing a combinatorial connection to the theory of tree volumes defined by Kelmans. In addition we give two simple proofs of the hook summation formula. As an application we describe how the hook summation formula g…
Let $d,n$ be positive integers such that $d<n$, and let $X^d_n$ be a Cayley graph generated by a transposition tree of diameter $d$. It is known that every $X^d_n$ with $d<3$ splits into efficient dominating sets. The main result of this paper is that $X^3_n$ does not have efficient dominating sets.
We provide a new derivation of the well-known generating function counting the number of walks on a regular tree that start and end at the same vertex, and more generally, a generating function for the number of walks that end at a vertex a distance i from the start vertex. These formulas seem to be very old, and go back, in an equivalent form, at least to Harry Kesten's work on symmetric random walks on groups from 1959, and in the present form to Brendan McKay (1983).
Let $Γ$ be a Cayley graph generated by a transposition tree. A natural problem is to understand how the properties of the Cayley graph depend on those of the underlying transposition tree. We focus here on diameter and distance related questions. We examine some related bounds and prove some properties about them. This paper has been withdrawn and a new version with these results and further extensions is at abs/1111.3114
We denote a polygon as a connected component in Cayley tree of order 2 containing certain number of fix vertices. We found an exact formula for a polygon counting problem for two cases, in which, for the first case the polygon contain a full connected component of a Cayley tree and for the second case the polygon contain two fixed vertices. From these formulas, which is in the form of finite linear combination of Catalan numbers, one can find the asymptotic estimation for a counting problem.
In this paper, we consider the Ising-Vanniminus model on an arbitrary order Cayley tree. We generalize the results conjectured in [Chinese Journal of Physics, 54 (4), 635-649 (2016)] and [International Journal of Modern Physics, arXiv:1608.06178] for an arbitrary order Cayley tree. We establish existence and a full classification of translation invariant Gibbs measures with memory of length 2 associated with the model on arbitrary order Cayley tree. We construct the recurrence equations corresponding generalized ANNNI model. We satisfy the Kolmogorov \emph{consistency} condition. We propose a …
We present a very simple bijective proof of Cayley's formula due to Foata and Fuchs (1970). This bijection turns out to be very useful when seen through a probabilistic lens; we explain some of the ways in which it can be used to derive probabilistic identities, bounds, and growth procedures for random trees with given degrees, including random d-ary trees. We also introduce a partial order on the degree sequences of rooted trees, and conjecture that it induces a stochastic partial order on heights of random rooted trees with given degrees.
Consider a uniform rooted Cayley tree $T_{n}$ with $n$ vertices and let $m$ cars arrive sequentially, independently, and uniformly on its vertices. Each car tries to park on its arrival node, and if the spot is already occupied, it drives towards the root of the tree and parks as soon as possible. Lackner & Panholzer (arXiv:1504.04972) established a phase transition for this process when $ m \approx \frac{n}{2}$. In this work, we couple this model with a variant of the classical Erdös-Rényi random graph process. This enables us to describe the phase transition for the size of the components of…
In this paper, we consider Vannimenus model with competing nearest-neighbors and prolonged next-nearest-neighbors interactions on a Cayley tree. For this model we define Markov random fields with memory of length 2. By using a new approach, we obtain new sets of Gibbs measures of Ising-Vannimenus model on Cayley tree of order 2. We construct the recurrence equations corresponding Ising-Vannimenus model. We prove the Kolmogorov consistency condition. We investigate the translation-invariant and periodic non transition-invariant Gibbs measures for the model. We find new sets of Gibbs measures di…
A problem of practical and theoretical interest is to determine or estimate the diameter of various families of Cayley networks. The previously known estimate for the diameter of Cayley graphs generated by transposition trees is an upper bound given in the oft-cited paper of Akers and Krishnamurthy (1989). In this work, we first assess the performance of their upper bound. We show that for every $n$, there exists a tree on $n$ vertices, such that the difference between the upper bound and the true diameter value is at least $n-4$. Evaluating their upper bound takes time $Ω(n!)$. In this paper,…
