We give a characterization of flat affine connections on manifolds by means of a natural affine representation of the universal covering of the Lie group of diffeomorphisms preserving the connection. From the infinitesimal point of view, this representation is determined by the 1-connection form and the fundamental form of the bundle of linear frames of the manifold. Affine transformations and parallel lightlike vector fields on compact Lorentzian $3$-manifolds

We describe the compact Lorentzian $3$-manifolds admitting a parallel lightlike vector field. The classification of compact Lorentzian $3$-manifolds admitting non-isometric affine diffeomorphisms follows, together with the complete description of these morphisms. Such a Lorentzian manifold is in some sense an equivariant deformation of a flat one.

Flat Affine and Symplectic Geometries on Lie Groups

In this paper we exhibit a family of flat left invariant affine structures on the double Lie group of the oscillator Lie group of dimension 4, associated to each solution of classical Yang-Baxter equation given by Boucetta and Medina. Cubic Differentials in the Differential Geometry of Surfaces

We discuss the local differential geometry of convex affine spheres in $\re^3$ and of minimal Lagrangian surfaces in Hermitian symmetric spaces. In each case, there is a natural metric and cubic differential holomorphic with respect to the induced conformal structure: these data come from the Blaschke metric and Pick form for the affine spheres and from the induced metric and second fundamental form for the minimal Lagrangian surfaces. The associated families of semi-homogeneous complete hyperbolic affine spheres

Hildebrand classified all semi-homogeneous cones in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and computed their corresponding complete hyperbolic affine spheres. We compute isothermal parametrizations for Hildebrand's new examples. After giving their affine metrics and affine cubic forms, we construct the whole associated family for each of Hildebrand's examples. The generic member of these affine spheres is given by Weierstrass $\mathscr{P}, ~ζ~\text{and} ~σ$ functions. In general any regular convex cone in $\mathbb{R}^3$ has a natural associated $S^1$-family of such cones, which deserve further studies.

Invariant higher-order variational problems II

Motivated by applications in computational anatomy, we consider a second-order problem in the calculus of variations on object manifolds that are acted upon by Lie groups of smooth invertible transformations. This problem leads to solution curves known as Riemannian cubics on object manifolds that are endowed with normal metrics. The prime examples of such object manifolds are the symmetric spaces. We characterize the class of cubics on object manifolds that can be lifted horizontally to cubics on the group of transformations. Geometric Properties of Conformal Transformations on $\mathbb{R}^{p,q}$

We show that conformal transformations on the generalized Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{p,q}$ map hyperboloids and affine hyperplanes into hyperboloids and affine hyperplanes. We also show that this action on hyperboloids and affine hyperplanes is transitive when $p$ or $q$ is $0$, and that this action has exactly three orbits if $p, q \ne 0$. Then we extend these results to hyperboloids and affine planes of arbitrary dimension. These properties generalize the well-known properties of Möbius (or fractional linear) transformations on the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$.

Riemannian Geometry Approach for Minimizing Distortion and its Applications

Given an affine transformation $T$, we define its Fisher distortion $Dist_F(T)$. We show that the Fisher distortion has Riemannian metric structure and provide an algorithm for finding mean distorting transformation -- namely -- for a given set $\{T_{i}\}_{i=1}^N$ of affine transformations, find an affine transformation $T$ that minimize the overall distortion $\sum_{i=1}^NDist_F^{2}(T^{-1}T_{i}).$ The mean distorting transformation can be useful in some fields -- in particular, we apply it for rendering affine panoramas.
