This note which can be viewed as a complement to Alex Postnikov's paper math.CO/0507163, presents a self-contained overview of basic properties of nested complexes and their two dual polyhedral realizations: as complete simplicial fans, and as simple polytopes. Most of the results are not new; our aim is to bring into focus a striking similarity between nested complexes and associated fans and polytopes on one side, and cluster complexes and generalized associahedra introduced and studied in hep-th/0111053, math.CO/0202004, on the other side.
We develop a method for subdividing polyhedral complexes in a way that restricts the possible recession cones and allows one to work with a fixed class of polyhedron. We use these results to construct locally finite completions of rational polyhedral complexes whose recession cones lie in a fixed fan, locally finite polytopal completions of polytopal complexes, and locally finite zonotopal completions of zonotopal complexes.
Nested set complexes appear as the combinatorial core of De Concini-Procesi arrangement models. We show that nested set complexes are homotopy equivalent to the order complexes of the underlying meet-semilattices without their minimal elements. For atomic semilattices, we consider the realization of nested set complexes by simplicial fans as proposed in math.AG/0305142 by the first author and S. Yuzvinsky. We show that in this case the nested set complexes in fact are homeomorphic to the mentioned order complexes.
We investigate the shellability of the polyhedral join $\mathcal{Z}^*_M (K, L)$ of simplicial complexes $K, M$ and a subcomplex $L \subset K$. We give sufficient conditions and necessary conditions on $(K, L)$ for $\mathcal{Z}^*_M (K, L)$ being shellable. In particular, we show that for some pairs $(K, L)$, $\mathcal{Z}^*_M (K, L)$ becomes shellable regardless of whether $M$ is shellable or not. Polyhedral joins can be applied to graph theory as the independence complex of a certain generalized version of lexicographic products of graphs which we define in this paper. The graph obtained from t…
We exhibit an identity of abstract simplicial complexes between the well-studied complex of trees and the reduced minimal nested set complex of the partition lattice. We conclude that the order complex of the partition lattice can be obtained from the complex of trees by a sequence of stellar subdivisions. We provide an explicit cohomology basis for the complex of trees that emerges naturally from this context. Motivated by these results, we review the generalization of complexes of trees to complexes of $k$-trees by Hanlon, and we propose yet another, in the context of nested set complexes mo…
Illumination complexes are examples of 'flat polyhedral complexes' which arise if several copies of a convex polyhedron (convex body) Q are glued together along some of their common faces (closed convex subsets of their boundaries). A particularly nice example arises if Q is a Δ-zonotope (generalized rhombic dodecahedron), known also as the dual of the difference body Δ - Δ of a simplex Δ, or the dual of the convex hull of the root system A_n. We demonstrate that the illumination complexes and their relatives can be used as 'configuration spaces', leading to new 'fair division theorems'. Among…
It is proved that every discrete Morse function in the sense of Forman on a finite regular CW complex can be represented by a polyhedral Morse function in the sense of Banchoff on an appropriate embedding in Euclidean space of the barycentric subdivision of the CW complex; such a representation preserves critical points. The proof is stated in terms of discrete Morse functions on a class of posets that is slightly broader than the class of face posets of finite regular CW complexes.
Golodness of 2-dimensional simplicial complexes is studied through polyhedral products, and combinatorial and topoogical characterization of Golodness of surface triangulations is given. An answer to the question of Berglund is also given so that there is a 2-dimensional simplicial complex which is rationally Golod but is not Golod over $\mathbb{Z}/p$.
We prove that for a simplicial complex $K$ whose Taylor resolution for the Stanley-Reisner ring is minimal, the following four conditions are equivalent: (1) $K$ satisfies the strong gcd-condition; (2) $K$ is Golod; (3) the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres; (4) the decomposition of the suspension of the polyhedral product $\mathcal{Z}_K(C\underline{X},\underline{X})$ due to Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen, and Gitler desuspends.
We prove that certain polyhedral products, including the moment-angle complexes, for the Alexander duals of shellable and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay complexes decompose into wedges of explicitly given suspension spaces, which implies the properties of the Stanley-Reisner rings, known as Golod, of theses complexes.
Representation stability in the sense of Church-Farb is concerned with stable properties of representations of sequences of algebraic structures, in particular of groups. We study this notion on objects arising in toric topology. With a simplicial $G$-complex $K$ and a topological pair $(X, A)$, a $G$-polyhedral product $(X, A)^K$ is associated. We show that the homotopy decomposition [2] of $Σ(X, A)^K$ is then $G$-equivariant after suspension. In the case of $Σ_m$-polyhedral products, we give criteria on simplicial $Σ_m$-complexes which imply representation stability of $Σ_m$-representations …
If $K$ is a simplicial complex on $m$ vertices the flagification of $K$ is the minimal flag complex $K^f$ on the same vertex set that contains $K$. Letting $L$ be the set of vertices, there is a sequence of simplicial inclusions $L\to K\to K^f$. This induces a sequence of maps of polyhedral products $(\underline X,\underline A)^L\stackrel g\longrightarrow(\underline X,\underline A)^K\stackrel f\longrightarrow (\underline X,\underline A)^{K^f}$. We show that $Ωf$ and $Ωf\circΩg$ have right homotopy inverses and draw consequences. For a flag complex $K$ the polyhedral product of the form $(\unde…
We generalize the concept of combinatorial nested set complexes to posets and exhibit the topological relationship between the arising nested set complexes and the order complex of the underlying poset. In particular, a sufficient condition is given so that this relationship is actually a subdivision. We use the results to generalize the proof method of Čukić and Delucchi, so far restricted to semilattices, for a result of Björner, Paffenholz, Sjöstrand and Ziegler on the Bier construction on posets.
We study dismantlability in graphs. In order to compare this notion to similar operations in posets (partially ordered sets) or in simplicial complexes, we prove that a graph G dismants on a subgraph H if and only if H is a strong deformation retract of G. Then, by looking at a triangle relating graphs, posets and simplicial complexes, we get a precise correspondence of the various notions of dismantlability in each framework. As an application, we study the link between the graph of morphisms from a graph G to a graph H and the polyhedral complex Hom(G,H); this gives a more precise statement …
We introduce decomposition complexes of posets, which generalize order complexes. The main advantage of our construction is that decomposition complexes are closed under taking products. Other special instances of this theory include nested set complexes as well as Bergman complexes.
Given a finite group G and a natural number n, we study the structure of the complex of nested sets of the associated Dowling lattice Q(G) and of its subposet of the G-symmetric partitions Q_G which was recently introduced by Hultman together with the complex of G-symmetric phylogenetic trees T_G. Hultman shows that T_G and Q_G are homotopy equivalent and Cohen-Macaulay, and determines the rank of their top homology. An application of the theory of building sets and nested set complexes by Feichtner and Kozlov shows that in fact T_G is subdivided by the order complex of Q_G. We introduce the c…
We consider a certain class of simplicial complexes which includes the independence complexes of forests. We show that if a simplicial complex $K$ belongs to this class, then the polyhedral join $\mathcal{Z}^*_{K}(\underline{X}, \emptyset)$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of CW complexes of the form $Σ^r X_{i_1} * X_{i_2} * \cdots * X_{i_k}$, where $\underline{X}$ is a family $\{X_i\}_{i \in V(K)}$ of CW complexes and $Σ$ denotes the unreduced suspension. This result is applied to study the homotopy type of the independence complex of the lexicographic product $G[H]$ of a graph $H$ over …
Globally non-positively curved, or CAT(0), polyhedral complexes arise in a number of applications, including evolutionary biology and robotics. These spaces have unique shortest paths and are composed of Euclidean polyhedra, yet many algorithms and properties of shortest paths and convex hulls in Euclidean space fail to transfer over. We give an algorithm, using linear programming, to compute the convex hull of a set of points in a 2-dimensional CAT(0) polyhedral complex with a single vertex. We explore the use of shortest path maps to answer single-source shortest path queries in 2-dimensiona…
In this paper, we investigate vector fields on polyhedral complexes and their associated trajectories. We study vector fields which are analogue of the gradient vector field of a function in the smooth case. Our goal is to define a nice theory of trajectories of such vector fields, so that the set of them captures the topology of the polyhedral complex, as in classical Morse theory. Since we do not assume the polyhedral complex to be a manifold, the definition of vector fields on it is very different from the smooth case. Nevertheless, we will show that there exist nice classes of functions an…
Let P be a convex polytope not simple in general. In the focus of this paper lies a simplicial complex K_P which carries complete information about the combinatorial type of P. In the case when P is simple, K_P is the same as dP*, where P* is a polar dual polytope. Using the canonical embedding of a polytope P into nonnegative orthant, we introduce a moment-angle space Z_P for a polytope P. It is known, that in the case when P is simple the space Z_P is homeomorphic to the polyhedral product (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. When P is not simple, we prove that the space Z_P is homotopically equivalent to the s…
There are many connections between the invariants of the different powers of an ideal. We investigate how to construct minimal resolutions for all powers at once using methods from algebraic and polyhedral topology with a focus on ideals arising from combinatorics. In one construction, we obtain cellular resolutions for all powers of edge ideals of bipartite graphs on n vertices, supported by (n-2)-dimensional complexes. Our main result is an explicit minimal cellular resolution for all powers of edge ideals of paths. These cell complexes are constructed by first subdividing polyhedral complex…
The paper surveys highlights of the ongoing program to classify discrete polyhedral structures in Euclidean 3-space by distinguished transitivity properties of their symmetry groups, focussing in particular on various aspects of the classification of regular polygonal complexes, chiral polyhedra, and more generally, two-orbit polyhedra.
Normal complexes are orthogonal truncations of polyhedral fans. In this paper, we develop the study of mixed volumes for normal complexes. Our main result is a sufficiency condition that ensures when the mixed volumes of normal complexes associated to a given fan satisfy the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities. By specializing to Bergman fans of matroids, we give a new proof of the Heron-Rota-Welsh Conjecture as a consequence of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for normal complexes.
We give combinatorial models for the homotopy type of complements of elliptic arrangements (i.e., certain sets of abelian subvarieties in a product of elliptic curves). We give a presentation of the fundamental group of such spaces and, as an application, we treat the case of ordered configuration spaces of elliptic curves. Our models are finite polyhedral CW complexes, and our combinatorial tools of choice are acyclic categories (small categories without loops). As a stepping stone, we give a characterization of which acyclic categories arise as face categories of polyhedral CW complexes.
We define and study a class of finite topological spaces, which model the cell structure of a space obtained by gluing finitely many Euclidean convex polyhedral cells along congruent faces. We call these finite topological spaces, combinatorial cell complexes (or c.c.c). We define orientability, homology and cohomology of c.c.c's and develop enough algebraic topology in this setting to prove the Poincare duality theorem for a c.c.c satisfying suitable regularity conditions. The definitions and proofs are completely finitary and combinatorial in nature.
We show that certain canonical realizations of the complexes Hom(G,H) and Hom_+(G,H) of (partial) graph homomorphisms studied by Babson and Kozlov are in fact instances of the polyhedral Cayley trick. For G a complete graph, we then characterize when a canonical projection of these complexes is itself again a complex, and exhibit several well-known objects that arise as cells or subcomplexes of such projected Hom-complexes: the dissections of a convex polygon into k-gons, Postnikov's generalized permutohedra, staircase triangulations, the complex dual to the lower faces of a cyclic polytope, a…
A family of polytopes introduced by E.M. Feichtner, A. Postnikov and B. Sturmfels, which were named nestohedra, consists in each dimension of an interval of polytopes starting with a simplex and ending with a permutohedron. This paper investigates a problem of changing and extending the boundaries of these intervals. An iterative application of Feichtner-Kozlov procedure of forming complexes of nested sets is a solution of this problem. By using a simple algebraic presentation of members of nested sets it is possible to avoid the problem of increasing the complexity of the structure of nested …
Associated to any divisor in the Chow ring of a simplicial tropical fan, we construct a family of polytopal complexes, called normal complexes, which we propose as an analogue of the well-studied notion of normal polytopes from the setting of complete fans. We describe certain closed convex polyhedral cones of divisors for which the "volume" of each divisor in the cone - that is, the degree of its top power - is equal to the volume of the associated normal complexes. For the Bergman fan of any matroid with building set, we prove that there exists an open family of such cones of divisors with n…
We investigate a version of Viro's method for constructing polynomial systems with many positive solutions, based on regular triangulations of the Newton polytope of the system. The number of positive solutions obtained with our method is governed by the size of the largest positively decorable subcomplex of the triangulation. Here, positive decorability is a property that we introduce and which is dual to being a subcomplex of some regular triangulation. Using this duality, we produce large positively decorable subcomplexes of the boundary complexes of cyclic polytopes. As a byproduct we get …
Motivated by the graph associahedron KG, a polytope whose face poset is based on connected subgraphs of G, we consider the notion of associativity and tubes on posets. This leads to a new family of simple convex polytopes obtained by iterated truncations. These generalize graph associahedra and nestohedra, even encompassing notions of nestings on CW-complexes. However, these poset associahedra fall in a different category altogether than generalized permutohedra.
The tropical variety defined by linear equations with constant coefficients is the Bergman fan of the corresponding matroid. Building on a self-contained introduction to matroid polytopes, we present a geometric construction of the Bergman fan, and we discuss its relationship with the simplicial complex of nested sets in the lattice of flats. The Bergman complex is triangulated by the nested set complex, and the two complexes coincide if and only if every connected flat remains connected after contracting along any subflat. This sharpens a result of Ardila-Klivans who showed that the Bergman c…
We introduce the wedge product of two polytopes. The wedge product is described in terms of inequality systems, in terms of vertex coordinates as well as purely combinatorially, from the corresponding data of its constituents. The wedge product construction can be described as an iterated ``subdirect product'' as introduced by McMullen (1976); it is dual to the ``wreath product'' construction of Joswig and Lutz (2005). One particular instance of the wedge product construction turns out to be especially interesting: The wedge products of polygons with simplices contain certain combinatorially r…
The angle defect, which is the standard way to measure curvature at the vertices of polyhedral surfaces, goes back at least as far as Descartes. Although the angle defect has been widely studied, there does not appear to be in the literature an axiomatic characterization of the angle defect. We give a characterization of the angle defect for simplicial surfaces, and we show that variants of the same characterization work for two known approaches to generalizing the angle defect to arbitrary 2-dimensional simplicial complexes. Simultaneously, we give a characterization of the Euler characterist…
Every tropical ideal in the sense of Maclagan-Rincón has an associated tropical variety, a finite polyhedral complex equipped with positive integral weights on its maximal cells. This leads to the realisability question, ubiquitous in tropical geometry, of which weighted polyhedral complexes arise in this manner. Using work of Las Vergnas on the non-existence of tensor products of matroids, we prove that there is no tropical ideal whose variety is the Bergman fan of the direct sum of the Vámos matroid and the uniform matroid of rank two on three elements, and in which all maximal cones have we…
For fixed positive integers $n$ and $k$, the Kneser graph $KG_{n,k}$ has vertices labeled by $k$-element subsets of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ and edges between disjoint sets. Keeping $k$ fixed and allowing $n$ to grow, one obtains a family of nested graphs, each of which is acted on by a symmetric group in a way which is compatible with all of the other actions. In this paper, we provide a framework for studying families of this kind using the FI-module theory of Church, Ellenberg, and Farb, and show that this theory has a variety of asymptotic consequences for such families of graphs. These consequen…
An associahedron is a polytope whose vertices correspond to the triangulations of a convex polygon and whose edges correspond to flips between them. A particularly elegant realization of the associahedron, due to S. Shnider and S. Sternberg and popularized by J.-L. Loday, has been generalized in two directions: on the one hand by A. Postnikov to obtain a realization of the graph associahedra of M. Carr and S. Devadoss, and on the other hand by C. Hohlweg and C. Lange to obtain multiple realizations of the associahedron parametrized by a sequence of signs. The goal of this paper is to unify and…
