Catalan-like numbers and succession rules

The ECO method and the theory of Catalan-like numbers introduced by Aigner seems two completely unrelated combinatorial settings. In this work we try to establish a bridge between them, aiming at starting a (hopefully) fruitful study on their interactions. We show that, in a linear algebra context (more precisely, using infinite matrices), a succession rule can be translated into a (generalized) Aigner matrix by means of a suitable change of basis in the vector space of one-variable polynomials. We provide some examples to illustrate this fact and apply it to the study of two particular classes of succession rules.

Slicings of parallelogram polyominoes: Catalan, Schröder, Baxter, and other sequences

We provide a new succession rule (i.e. generating tree) associated with Schröder numbers, that interpolates between the known succession rules for Catalan and Baxter numbers. We define Schröder and Baxter generalizations of parallelogram polyominoes, called slicings, which grow according to these succession rules. Parametric production matrices and weighted succession rules: a Dyck path example

We introduce weighted succession rules and parametric production matrices - simple extensions of the standard ECO method succession rules and production matrices. The purpose is to enumerate combinatorial objects with respect to several variables. We consider one main example, from the theory of Dyck paths. The path statistics primarily considered are peak height, rise height, and certain subwalks. Many classical sequences (such as the Catalan, Motzkin, Narayana and Schroeder numbers) are incorporated in this example.

Mixed succession rules: the commutative case

We begin a systematic study of the enumerative combinatorics of mixed succession rules, which are succession rules such that, in the associated generating tree, the nodes are allowed to produce their sons at several different levels according to different production rules. The first problem addressed by this article is the enumeration of some families of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences. A general exhaustive generation algorithm for Gray structures

Starting from a succession rule for Catalan numbers, we define a procedure encoding and listing the objects enumerated by these numbers such that two consecutive codes of the list differ only for one digit. Recurrence relations versus succession rules

In this paper we present a method to pass from a recurrence relation having constant coefficients (in short, a C-recurrence) to a finite succession rule defining the same number sequence. We recall that succession rules are a recently studied tool for the enumeration of combinatorial objects related to the ECO method. We also discuss the applicability of our method as a test for the positivity of a number sequence.

Unimodality and Dyck paths

We propose an original approach to the problem of rankunimodality for Dyck lattices. It is based on a well known recursive construction of Dyck paths originally developed in the context of the ECO methodology, which provides a partition of Dyck lattices into saturated chains. Catalan and Schröder permutations sortable by two restricted stacks

Pattern avoiding machines were introduced recently by Claesson, Cerbai and Ferrari as a particular case of the two-stacks in series sorting device. Production matrices and Riordan arrays

We translate the concept of succession rule and the ECO method into matrix notation, introducing the concept of a production matrix. This allows us to combine our method with other enumeration techniques using matrices, such as the method of Riordan matrices.
