This paper deals with a class of nonlinear elliptic equations involving a critical power-nonlinearity as well as a potential featuring multiple inverse square singularities. When the poles form a symmetric structure, it is natural we wonder how the symmetry affects such mutual interaction. The present paper means to study this aspect from the point of view of the existence of solutions inheriting the same symmetry properties as the set of singularities.
We prove dispersive and Strichartz estimates for Schrödinger equations on normal real form symmetric spaces. These estimates apply to the well-posedness and scattering for the nonlinear Schrödinger equations.
We prove dispersive and Strichartz estimates for Schrö- dinger equations on a class of locally symmetric spaces Γ\X, where X = G/K is a symmetric space and Γ is a torsion free discrete sub- group of G. We deal with the cases when either X has rank one or G is complex. We present Strichartz estimates applications to the well-posedness and scattering for nonlinear Schrödinger equations.
In this paper a nonlinear coupled Schrodinger system in the presence of mixed cubic and superlinear power laws is considered. Focus are made on the steady state solutions of the continuous system for existence and uniqueness by minimizing problem on some associated Nehari manifold.
Let X be a Riemannian symmetric space of the noncompact type. We prove that the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation on X with square integrable initial condition f is identically zero at all times t whenever f and the solution at a time t0 > 0 are simultaneously very rapidly decreasing. The stated condition of rapid decrease is of Beurling type. Conditions respectively of Gelfand-Shilov, Cowling-Price and Hardy type are deduced.
We establish sharp-in-time kernel and dispersive estimates for the Schrödinger equation on non-compact Riemannian symmetric spaces of any rank. Due to the particular geometry at infinity and the Kunze-Stein phenomenon, these properties are more pronounced in large time and enable us to prove the global-in-time Strichartz inequality for a larger family of admissible couples than in the Euclidean case. Consequently, we obtain the global well-posedness for the corresponding semilinear equation with lower regularity data and some scattering properties for small powers which are known to fail in th…
This paper studies highly oscillatory solutions to a class of systems of semilinear hyperbolic equations with a small parameter, in a setting that includes Klein--Gordon equations and the Maxwell--Lorentz system. The interest here is in solutions that are polarized in the sense that up to a small error, the oscillations in the solution depend on only one of the frequencies that satisfy the dispersion relation with a given wave vector appearing in the initial wave packet. The construction and analysis of such polarized solutions is done using modulated Fourier expansions. This approach includes…
We prove the existence of a ground state positive solution of Schrödinger-Poisson systems in the plane of the form $$ -Δu + V(x)u + \fracγ{2π} \left(\log|\cdot| \ast u^2 \right)u = b |u|^{p-2}u \qquad\text{in}\ \mathbb{R}^2, $$ where $p>4$, $γ,b>0$ and the potential $V$ is assumed to be positive and unbounded at infinity. On the potential we do not require any symmetry or periodicity assumption, and it is not supposed it has a limit at infinity. We approach the problem by variational methods, using a variant of the mountain pass theorem and the Cerami compactness condition.
We prove global well-posedness for a cubic, non-local Schrödinger equation with radially-symmetric initial data in the critical space $L^2(\R^2)$, using the framework of Kenig-Merle and Killip-Tao-Visan. As a consequence, we obtain a global well-posedness result for Schrödinger maps from $\R^2$ into $§^2$ (Landau-Lifshitz equation) with radially symmetric initial data (with no size restriction).
We consider the quadratic nonlinear Schrödinger system \begin{align*} \begin{cases} i\partial_t u +Δu =v \overline{u},\\ i\partial_t v +κΔv =u^2, \end{cases} \text{ on } I \times \mathbb{R}^d, \end{align*} where $1\leq d \leq 6$ and $κ>0$. In the lower dimensional case $d=1,2,3$, it is known that the $H^1$-solution is global in time. On the other hand, there are finite time blow-up solutions when $d=4,5,6$ and $κ=1/2$. The condition of $κ=1/2$ is called mass-resonance. In this paper, we prove finite time blow-up under radially symmetric assumption when $d=5,6$ and $κ\neq 1/2$ and we show blow-…
We consider the standing-wave problem for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation, corresponding to the semilinear elliptic problem \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u=|u|^{p-1}u,\ u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^2), \end{equation*} where $V(x)$ is a uniformly positive potential and $p>1$. Assuming that \begin{equation*} V(x)=V_\infty+\frac{a}{|x|^m}+O\Big(\frac{1}{|x|^{m+σ}}\Big),\ \text{as}\ |x|\rightarrow+\infty, %\tag{$V2$} \end{equation*} for instance if $p>2$, $m>2$ and $σ>1$ we prove the existence of infinitely many positive solutions. If $V(x)$ is radially symmetric, this result was proved in \cite{WY-10}. The p…
In this paper, we study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with non-symmetric electromagnetic fields $$\Big(\frac{\nabla}{i}-A_ε x)\Big)^2 u+V_ε(x)u=f(u),\ u\in H^1 (\mathbb{R}^N,\mathbb{C}), $$ where $A_ε(x)=(A_{ε,1}(x),A_{ε,2}(x),\cdots,A_{ε,N}(x))$ is a magnetic field satisfying that $A_{ε,j}(x)(j=1,\ldots,N)$ is a real $C^{1}$ bounded function on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ and $V_ε(x)$ is an electric potential. Both of them satisfy some decay conditions and $f(u)$ is a nonlinearity satisfying some nondegeneracy condition. Applying localized energy method, we prove that there exists some $ε_{0 }> 0$ …
We study a system of two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, where one equation includes gain and the other one includes losses. Strengths of the gain and the loss are equal, i.e., the resulting system is parity-time (${\cal PT}$) symmetric. The model includes both linear and nonlinear couplings, such that when all nonlinear coefficients are equal, the system represents the ${\cal PT}$-generalization of the Manakov model. In the one-dimensional case, we prove the existence of a global solution to the Cauchy problem in energy space $H^1$, such that the $H^1$-norm of the global solution may…
We establish global well-posedness and scattering for solutions to the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $iu_t + Δu = \pm |u|^{4/d} u$ for large spherically symmetric L^2_x(R^d) initial data in dimensions $d\geq 3$. In the focusing case we require that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state. As a consequence, we obtain that in the focusing case, any spherically symmetric blowup solution must concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the blowup time.
We provide an existence result of radially symmetric, positive, classical solutions for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation driven by the infinitesimal generator of a rotationally invariant Lévy process.
In this paper, we consider the nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equations with Hartree type nonlinearity. We obtain the existence of standing waves by studying the related constrained minimization problems by applying the concentration-compactness principle. Via symmetric decreasing rearrangements, we also show that the standing waves, up to a translations and phases, are positive symmetric nonincreasing functions. Moreover, we prove that the set of minimizers is a stable set for the initial value problem of the equations, that is, a solution whose initial data is near the set will remain near…
By means of a perturbation method recently introduced by Bolle, we discuss the existence of infinitely many solutions for a class of perturbed symmetric higher order Schrodinger equations with non-homogeneous boundary data on unbounded domains.
We study Schrödinger operators on $L^2(E;m)$ of the form $-A+V$ with singular potentials $V$. We address the question posed by H. Brezis about the structure of the set $\{u=0\}$ for non-negative supersolutions to $-Au+Vu=0$. The class of operators $A$ we study in the paper includes, in particular, symmetric Levy type operators and symmetric diffusions in divergence form, with strictly positive Green functions. The class of potentials $V$ consists of positive smooth measures, which contains, in particular, Coulomb potentials and harmonic potentials, as well as generalized potentials, i.e. posit…
We establish global well-posedness and scattering for solutions to the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $iu_t + Δu = \pm |u|^2 u$ for large spherically symmetric L^2_x(\R^2) initial data; in the focusing case we require, of course, that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state. As a consequence, we deduce that in the focusing case, any spherically symmetric blowup solution must concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the blowup time. We also establish some partial results towards the analogous claims in other dimensions and without the assumption of sphe…
In this paper, we consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a real valued potential V=V(x). We study global behavior of solutions to the equation with a data below the ground state under some conditions for the potential V and prove a scattering result and a blowing-up result in mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical. Our proof of the blowing-up or growing-up result without radially symmetric assumption is based on the argument by Du-Wu-Zhang in [6]. We can exclude the possibility of the growing-up result by the argument in [23], [15], and [10] if "the data and the potential are radi…
This analysis is concerned with the controllability of quantum systems in the case where the standard dipolar approximation, involving the permanent dipole moment of the system, is corrected with a polarizability term, involving the field induced dipole moment. Sufficient conditions for approximate controllability are given. For transfers between eigenstates of the free Hamiltonian, the control laws are explicitly given. The results apply also for unbounded or non-regular potentials.
In this paper we study standing waves for pseudo-relativistic nonlinear Schrödinger equations. In the first part we find ground state solutions. We also prove that they have one sign and are radially symmetric. The second part is devoted to take nonrelativistic limit of the ground state solutions in $H^1 (\mathbb{R}^n)$ space.
We consider a class of $L^2$-supercritical inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equations with potential in three dimensions \[ i\partial_t u + Δu - V u = \pm |x|^{-b} |u|^αu, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^3, \] where $0<b<1$ and $α>\frac{4-2b}{3}$. In the focusing case, by adapting an argument of Dodson-Murphy, we first study the energy scattering below the ground state for the equation with radially symmetric initial data. We then establish blow-up criteria for the equation whose proof is based on an argument of Du-Wu-Zhang. In the defocusing case, we also prove the energy scat…
We study existence of weak solutions for certain classes of nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the Poincaré ball model $\mathbb{B}^N$, $N\geq 3$. By using the Palais principle of symmetric criticality and suitable group theoretical arguments, we establish the existence of a nontrivial (weak) solution.
We prove finite time supercritical blowup in a parity-time-symmetric system of the two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. One of the equations contains gain and the other one contains dissipation such that strengths of the gain and dissipation are equal. We address two cases: in the first model all nonlinear coefficients (i.e. the ones describing self-action and non-linear coupling) correspond to attractive (focusing) nonlinearities, and in the second case the NLS equation with gain has attractive nonlinearity while the NLS equation with dissipation has repulsive (defocusing) nonli…
We consider a quantum particle in a 1D interval submitted to a potential. The evolution of this particle is controlled using an external electric field. Taking into account the so-called polarizability term in the model (quadratic with respect to the control), we prove global exact controllability in a suitable space for arbitrary potential and arbitrary dipole moment. This term is relevant both from the mathematical and physical points of view. The proof uses tools from the bilinear setting and a perturbation argument.
We consider nonlinear Schrödinger equations in dimension 3 or higher. We prove that symmetric finite energy solutions close to orbitally stable ground states converge asymptotically to a sum of a ground state and a dispersive wave assuming the so called Fermi Golden Rule (FGR) hypothesis. We improve the sign condition required in a recent paper by Gang Zhou and I.M.Sigal
We study the asymptotic behavior of large data solutions to Schrödinger equations $i u_t + Δu = F(u)$ in $\R^d$, assuming globally bounded $H^1_x(\R^d)$ norm (i.e. no blowup in the energy space), in high dimensions $d \geq 5$ and with nonlinearity which is energy-subcritical and mass-supercritical. In the spherically symmetric case, we show that as $t \to +\infty$, these solutions split into a radiation term that evolves according to the linear Schrödinger equation, and a remainder which converges in $H^1_x(\R^d)$ to a compact attractor, which consists of the union of spherically symmetric alm…
In this paper, we prove a universal upper bound on the blowup rate of a focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an angular momentum under a trapping harmonic potential, assuming that the initial data is radially symmetric in the weighted Sobolev space. The nonlinearity is in the mass supercritical and energy subcritical regime. Numerical simulations are also presented.
In this note we prove the existence of radially symmetric solutions for a class of fractional Schrödinger equation in (\mathbb{R}^N) of the form {equation*} \slap u + V(x) u = g(u), {equation*} where the nonlinearity $g$ does not satisfy the usual Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. Our approach is variational in nature, and leans on a Pohozaev identity for the fractional laplacian.
In the framework of the nonsmooth critical point theory for lower semi-continuous functionals, we propose a direct variational approach to investigate the existence of infinitely many weak solutions for a class of semi-linear elliptic equations with logarithmic nonlinearity arising in physically relevant situations. Furthermore, we prove that there exists a unique positive solution which is radially symmetric and nondegenerate.
The integrable nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger (NNLS) equation with the self-induced parity-time-symmetric potential [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 064105] is investigated, which is an integrable extension of the standard NLS equation. Its novel higher-order rational solitons are found using the nonlocal version of the generalized perturbation (1, N-1)-fold Darboux transformation. These rational solitons illustrate abundant wave structures for the distinct choices of parameters (e.g., the strong and weak interactions of bright and dark rational solitons). Moreover, we also explore the dynamical b…
In this paper we prove a sufficient condition, in terms of the behavior of a ground state of a symmetric critical operator $P_1$, such that a nonzero subsolution of a symmetric nonnegative operator $P_0$ is a ground state. Particularly, if $P_j:=-Δ+V_j$, for $j=0,1$, are two nonnegative Schrödinger operators defined on $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ such that $P_1$ is critical in $Ω$ with a ground state $ϕ$, the function $ψ\nleq 0$ is a subsolution of the equation $P_0u=0$ in $Ω$ and satisfies $|ψ|\leq Cϕ$ in $Ω$, then $P_0$ is critical in $Ω$ and $ψ$ is its ground state. In particular, $ψ$ is (up …
The extreme events are investigated for an $n$-component nonlinear Schrödinger ($n$-NLS) system in the focusing Kerr-like nonlinear media, which appears in many physical fields. We report and discuss the novel multi-parametric families of vector rational rogue wave (RW) solutions featuring the parity-time (PT) symmetry, which are characterized by non-identical boundary conditions for the components, and consistent with the degeneracy of $n$ branches of Benjamin-Feir instability. Explicit examples of PT-symmetric vector RWs are presented. Some parameter constraints can make some components gene…
We establish the uniqueness of a smooth generalized bi-Schrödinger flow from the one-dimensional flat torus into a compact locally Hermitian symmetric space. The governing equation, which is satisfied by sections of the pull-back bundle induced from the flow, is a fourth-order nonlinear dispersive partial differential equation with loss of derivatives. To show the uniqueness, we adopt an extrinsic approach to compare two solutions via an isometric embedding into an ambient Euclidean space. We introduce an energy modifying the classical $H^2$-energy for the difference of two solutions, the deta…
We consider the focusing (attractive) nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with an external, symmetric potential which vanishes at infinity and supports a linear bound state. We prove that the symmetric, nonlinear ground states must undergo a symmetry breaking bifurcation if the potential has a non-degenerate local maxima at zero. Under a generic assumption we show that the bifurcation is either subcritical or supercritical pitchfork. In the particular case of double-well potentials with large separation, the power of nonlinearity determines the subcritical or supercritical character of the bi…
We introduce a new unified two-parameter $\{(ε_x, ε_t)\,|ε_{x,t}=\pm1\}$ wave model (simply called ${\mathcal Q}_{ε_x,ε_t}^{(n)}$ model), connecting integrable local and nonlocal vector nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The two-parameter $(ε_x, ε_t)$ family also brings insight into a one-to-one connection between four points $(ε_x, ε_t)$ (or complex numbers $ε_x+iε_t$) with $\{{\mathcal I}, {\mathcal P}, {\mathcal T}, {\mathcal PT}\}$ symmetries for the first time. The ${\mathcal Q}_{ε_x,ε_t}^{(n)}$ model with $(ε_x, ε_t)=(\pm 1, 1)$ is shown to possess a Lax pair and infinite number of conserv…
We construct multiple families of solitary standing waves of the discrete cubically nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLS) in dimensions $d=1,2$ and $3$. These states are obtained via a bifurcation analysis about the continuum (NLS) limit. One family consists {\it on-site symmetric} (vertex-centered) states; these are spatially localized solitary standing waves which are symmetric about any fixed lattice site. The other spatially localized states are {\it off-site symmetric}. Depending on the spatial dimension, these may be bond-centered, cell-centered, or face-centered. Finally, we show that t…
In this paper we give a simple and short proof of asymptotic stability of soliton for discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation near anti-continuous limit. Our novel insight is that the analysis of linearized operator, usually non-symmetric, can be reduced to a study of simple self-adjoint operator almost like the free discrete Laplacian restricted on odd functions.
