The Multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan states an upper bound for the multiplicity of any graded $k$-algebra as well as a lower bound for Cohen-Macaulay algebras. In this note we extend this conjecture in several directions. We discuss when these bounds are sharp, find a sharp lower bound in case of not necessarily arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay one-dimensional schemes of 3-space, and we propose an upper bound for finitely generated graded torsion modules. We establish this bound for torsion modules whose codimension is at most two.
We establish the multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan about the multiplicity of graded Cohen-Macaulay algebras over a field, for codimension two algebras and for Gorenstein algebras of codimension three. In fact, we prove stronger bounds than the conjectured ones allowing us to characterize the extremal cases. This may be seen as a converse to the multiplicity formula of Huneke and Miller that inspired the conjectural bounds.
We use the results by Eisenbud and Schreyer to prove that any Betti diagram of a graded module over a standard graded polynomial ring is a positive linear combination Betti diagrams of modules with a pure resolution. This implies the Multiplicity Conjecture of Herzog, Huneke and Srinivasan for modules that are not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay. We give a combinatorial proof of the convexity of the simplicial fan spanned by the pure diagrams.
Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan have conjectured that for any homogeneous $k$-algebra, the multiplicity is bounded above by a function of the maximal degrees of the syzygies and below by a function of the minimal degrees of the syzygies. The goal of this paper is to establish the multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan about the multiplicity of graded Cohen-Macaulay algebras over a field $k$ for $k$-algebras $k[x_1, ..., x_n]/I$ being $I$ a determinantal ideal of arbitrary codimension.
A linear ball is a simplicial complex whose geometric realization is homeomorphic to a ball and whose Stanley--Reisner ring has a linear resolution. It turns out that the Stanley--Reisner ring of the sphere which is the boundary complex of a linear ball satisfies the multiplicity conjecture. A class of shellable spheres arising naturally from commutative algebra whose Stanley--Reisner rings satisfy the multiplicity conjecture will be presented.
The Multiplicity Conjecture is a deep problem relating the multiplicity (or degree) of a Cohen-Macaulay standard graded algebra with certain extremal graded Betti numbers in its minimal free resolution. In the case of level algebras of codimension three, Zanello has proposed a stronger conjecture. We prove this conjecture for the case of codimension three graded Gorenstein algebras.
We prove a reformulation of the multiplicity upper bound conjecture and use that reformulation to prove it for three-dimensional simplicial complexes and homology manifolds with many vertices. We provide necessary conditions for a Cohen-Macaulay complex with many vertices to have a pure minimal free resolution and a characterization of flag complexes whose minimal free resolution is pure.
We give conjectures on the possible graded Betti numbers of Cohen-Macaulay modules up to multiplication by positive rational numbers. The idea is that the Betti diagrams should be non-negative linear combinations of pure diagrams. The conjectures are verified in the cases where the structure of resolutions are known, i.e., for modules of codimension two, for Gorenstein algebras of codimension three and for complete intersections. The motivation for the conjectures comes from the Multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke and Srinivasan.
We give an algorithm to determine whether Wilf's conjecture holds for all numerical semigroups with a given multiplicity $m$, and use it to prove Wilf's conjecture holds whenever $m \le 18$. Our algorithm utilizes techniques from polyhedral geometry, and includes a parallelizable algorithm for enumerating the faces of any polyhedral cone up to orbits of an automorphism group. We also introduce a new method of verifying Wilf's conjecture via a combinatorially-flavored game played on the elements of a certain finite poset.
Given a finitely generated module $M$ over a local ring $A$ of characteristic $p$ with $\pd M < \infty$, we study the asymptotic intersection multiplicity $χ_\infty(M, A/\underline{x})$, where $\underline{x} = (x_1, \ldots, x_r)$ is a system of parameters for $M$. We show that there exists a system of parameters such that $χ_\infty$ is positive if and only if $\dim \Ext^{d-r}(M, A) = r$, where $d = \dim A$ and $r = \dim M$. We use this to prove several results relating to the Grade Conjecture, which states that $\grade M + \dim M = \dim A$ for any module $M$ with $\pd M < \infty$.
Let $A = K[X_1,...,X_n]$ and let $I$ be a graded ideal in $A$. We show that the upper bound of Multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke and Srinivasan holds asymptotically (i.e., for $I^k$ and all $k \gg 0$) if $I$ belongs to any of the following large classes of ideals: \begin{enumerate}[\rm (1)] \item radical ideals. \item monomial ideals with generators in different degrees. \item zero-dimensional ideals with generators in different degrees. \end{enumerate} Surprisingly, our proof uses local techniques like analyticity, reductions, equimultiplicity and local results like Rees's theorem on …
For a simplicial complex $Δ$ we study the effect of barycentric subdivision on ring theoretic invariants of its Stanley-Reisner ring. In particular, for Stanley-Reisner rings of barycentric subdivisions we verify a conjecture by Huneke and Herzog & Srinivasan, that relates the multiplicity of a standard graded $k$-algebra to the product of the maximal and minimal shifts in its minimal free resolution up to the height. On the way to proving the conjecture we develop new and list well known results on behavior of dimension, Hilbert series, multiplicity, local cohomology, depth and regularity whe…
A weaker form of the multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan is proven for two classes of monomial ideals: quadratic monomial ideals and squarefree monomial ideals with sufficiently many variables relative to the Krull dimension. It is also shown that tensor products, as well as Stanley-Reisner ideals of certain unions, satisfy the multiplicity conjecture if all the components do. Conditions under which the bounds are achieved are also studied.
We present a proof of the Harbourne-Hirschowitz conjecture for linear systems with base points of multiplicity seven or less. This proof uses a well-known degeneration of the projective plane, as well as a combinatorial technique that arises from specializing points onto a line.
In the paper we prove Harbourne-Hirschowitz conjecture for quasi-homogeneous linear systems on $\mathbb P^2$ for $m=7$, 8, 9, 10, i.e. systems of curves of given degree passing through points in general position with multiplicities at least $m,...,m,m_0$, where $m=7$, 8, 9, 10, $m_0$ is arbitrary.
We prove the multiplicity bounds conjectured by Herzog-Huneke-Srinivasan and Herzog-Srinivasan in the following cases: the strong conjecture for edge ideals of bipartite graphs, and the weaker Taylor bound conjecture for all quadratic monomial ideals. We attach a directed graph to a bipartite graph with perfect matching, and describe operations on the directed graph that would reduce the problem to a Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graph. We determine when equality holds in the conjectured bound for edge ideals of bipartite graphs, and verify that when equality holds, the resolution is pure. We chara…
We use the theory of resolutions for a given Hilbert function to investigate the multiplicity conjectures of Huneke and Srinivasan and Herzog and Srinivasan. To prove the conjectures for all modules with a particular Hilbert function, we show that it is enough to prove the statements only for elements at the bottom of the partially ordered set of resolutions with that Hilbert function. This enables us to test the conjectured upper bound for the multiplicity efficiently with the computer algebra system Macaulay 2, and we verify the upper bound for many Artinian modules in three variables with s…
The F-threshold $c^J(\a)$ of an ideal $\a$ with respect to the ideal $J$ is a positive characteristic invariant obtained by comparing the powers of $\a$ with the Frobenius powers of $J$. We show that under mild assumptions, we can detect the containment in the integral closure or the tight closure of a parameter ideal using F-thresholds. We formulate a conjecture bounding $c^J(\a)$ in terms of the multiplicities $e(\a)$ and $e(J)$, when $\a$ and $J$ are zero-dimensional ideals, and $J$ is generated by a system of parameters. We prove the conjecture when $J$ is a monomial ideal in a polynomial …
Let $R$ be an excellent Noetherian ring of prime characteristic. Consider an arbitrary nested pair of ideals (or more generally, a nested pair of submodules of a fixed finite module). We do \emph{not} assume that their quotient has finite length. In this paper, we develop various sufficient numerical criteria for when the tight closures of these ideals (or submodules) match. For some of the criteria we only prove sufficiency, while some are shown to be equivalent to the tight closures matching. We compare the various numerical measures (in some cases demonstrating that the different measures g…
The $F$-threshold $c^J(\a)$ of an ideal $\a$ with respect to an ideal $J$ is a positive characteristic invariant obtained by comparing the powers of $\a$ with the Frobenius powers of $J$. We study a conjecture formulated in an earlier paper \cite{HMTW} by the same authors together with M. Mustaţă, which bounds $c^J(\a)$ in terms of the multiplicities $e(\a)$ and $e(J)$, when $\a$ and $J$ are zero-dimensional ideals and $J$ is generated by a system of parameters. We prove the conjecture when $\a$ and $J$ are generated by homogeneous systems of parameters in a Noetherian graded $k$-algebra. We a…
We establish the upper bound in the multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke and Srinivasan for the codimension three almost complete intersections. We also give some partial results in the case where I is the aci linked to a complete intersection in one step.
The Multiplicity Conjecture (MC) of Huneke and Srinivasan provides upper and lower bounds for the multiplicity of a Cohen-Macaulay algebra $A$ in terms of the shifts appearing in the modules of the minimal free resolution (MFR) of $A$. All the examples studied so far have lead to conjecture (see $[HZ]$ and $[MNR2]$) that, moreover, the bounds of the MC are sharp if and only if $A$ has a pure MFR. Therefore, it seems a reasonable - and useful - idea to seek better, if possibly {\it ad hoc}, bounds for particular classes of Cohen-Macaulay algebras. In this work we will only consider the codimens…
We present results on the Watanabe-Yoshida conjecture for the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of a local ring of positive characteristic. By improving on a "volume estimate" giving a lower bound for Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity, we obtain the conjecture when the ring either has Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity less than or equal to five, or dimension less than or equal to six. For non-regular rings with fixed dimension, a new lower bound for the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity is obtained.
We show that the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of a $d$-dimensional nonregular complete intersection over the algebraic closure of $F_p$, $p>2$ prime, is bounded by below by the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of the hypersurface $\sum _{i=0}^{d} x_i^2=0$, answering positively a conjecture of Watanabe and Yoshida in the case of complete intersections.
The multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan is verified for the face rings of the following classes of simplicial complexes: matroid complexes, complexes of dimension one and two, and Gorenstein complexes of dimension at most four. The lower bound part of this conjecture is also established for the face rings of all doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes whose 1-skeleton's connectivity does not exceed the codimension plus one as well as for all (d-1)-dimensional d-Cohen-Macaulay complexes. The main ingredient of the proofs is a new interpretation of the minimal shifts in the resolut…
In this note we compare the a-invariant of a homogeneous algebra B to the a-invariant of a subalgebra A. In particular we show that if $A \subset B$ is a finite homogeneous inclusion of standard graded domains over an algebraically closed field with A normal and B of minimal multiplicity then A has minimal multiplicity. In some sense these results are algebraic generalizations of Hurwitz type theorems.
The present paper is devoted to an algebraic treatment of the joint spectral theory within the framework of Noetherian modules over an algebra finite extension of an algebraically closed field. We prove the spectral mapping theorem and analyze the index of tuples in purely algebraic case. The index function over tuples from the coordinate ring of a variety is naturally extended up to a numerical Tor-polynomial. Based on Serre's multiplicity formula, we deduce that Tor-polynomial is just the Samuel polynomial of the local algebra.
For a graph $G$, Postnikov-Shapiro \cite{PS04} construct two ideals $I_G$ and $J_G.$ $I_G$ is a monomial ideal and $J_G$ is generated by powers of linear forms. They proved the equality of their Hilbert series and conjectured that the graded Betti numbers are equal. When $G=K_{n+1}^{l,k}$ is the complete graph on the vertices $\{0,1,\cdots, n\}$ with the edges $e_{i, j},$ $i, j\neq 0,$ of multiplicity $k$ and the edges $e_{0, i}$ of multiplicity $l,$ for two non-negative integers $k$ and $l,$ they gave an explicit formula for the graded Betti numbers of $I_G,$ which are conjecturally the same …
