Let K be a field and \tilde{K} denote the set of all r \in K for which there exists a finite set A(r) with {r} \subseteq A(r) \subseteq K such that each mapping f:A(r) \to K that satisfies: if 1 \in A(r) then f(1)=1, if a,b \in A(r) and a+b \in A(r) then f(a+b)=f(a)+f(b), if a,b \in A(r) and a \cdot b \in A(r) then f(a \cdot b)=f(a) \cdot f(b), satisfies also f(r)=r. We prove: \tilde{K} is a subfield of K, \tilde{K}={x \in K: {x} is existentially first-order definable in the language of rings without parameters}, if some subfield of K is algebraically closed then \tilde{K} is the prime field in K, some elements of \tilde{K} are transcendental over Q (over R, over Q_p) for a large class of fields K that are finitely generated over Q (that extend R, that extend Q_p), if K is a Pythagorean subfield of R, t is transcendental over K, and r \in K is recursively approximable, then {r} is \emptyset-definable in (K(t),+,\cdot,0,1), if a real number r is recursively approximable then {r} is existentially \emptyset-definable in (R,+,\cdot,0,1,U) for some unary predicate U which is implicitly \emptyset-definable in (R,+,\cdot,0,1).
In this paper we give an explicit characterization of o-minimal structures with definable Skolem functions/definable choice. Such structures are, after naming finitely many elements from the prime model, a union of finitely many trivial points each defined over $\emptyset $ and finitely many open intervals each a union of a $\emptyset $-definable family of group-intervals with fixed positive elements.
We study amenability of definable and topological groups. Among our main technical tools is an elaboration on and strengthening of the Massicot-Wagner version of the stabilizer theorem, and some results around measures. As an application we show that if $G$ is an amenable topological group, then the Bohr compactification of $G$ coincides with a certain "weak Bohr compactification" introduced in [24]. Formally, $G^{00}_{topo} = G^{000}_{topo}$. We also prove wide generalizations of this result, implying in particular its extension to a "definable-topological" context, confirming the main conjec…
The aim of this paper is to develop the theory of groups definable in the $p$-adic field ${\mathbb Q}_p$, with ``definable $f$-generics" in the sense of an ambient saturated elementary extension of ${\mathbb Q}_p$. We call such groups definable $f$-generic groups. So, by a ``definable f-generic'' or dfg group we mean a definable group in a saturated model with a global f-generic type which is definable over a small model. In the present context the group is definable over ${\mathbb Q}_p$, and the small model will be ${\mathbb Q}_p$ itself. The notion of a dfg group is dual, or rather opposite …
We investigate the structure of rank-to-rank elementary embeddings, working in ZF set theory without the Axiom of Choice. Recall that the levels $V_α$ of the cumulative hierarchy are defined via iterated application of the power set operation, starting from $V_0=\emptyset$, and taking unions at limit stages. Assuming that $j:V_{α+1}\to V_{α+1}$ is a (non-trivial) elementary embedding, we show that the structure of $V_α$ is fundamentally different to that of $V_{α+1}$. We show that $j$ is definable from parameters over $V_{α+1}$ iff $α+1$ is an odd ordinal. Moreover, if $α+1$ is odd then $j$ is…
We show a transfer principle for the property that all types realised in a given elementary extension are definable. It can be written as follows: a Henselian valued fields is stably embedded in an elementary extension if and only if its value group is stably embedded in its corresponding extension, its residue field is stably embedded in its corresponding extension, and the extension of valued fields satisfies a certain algebraic condition. We show for instance that all types over the Hahn field $\mathbb{R}((\mathbb{Z}))$ are definable. Similarly, all types over the quotient field of the Witt…
'Skolem arithmetic' is the complete theory $T$ of the multiplicative monoid $(\mathbb{N},\cdot)$. We give a full characterization of the $\varnothing$-definable stably embedded sets of $T$, showing in particular that, up to the relation of having the same definable closure, there is only one non-trivial one: the set of squarefree elements. We then prove that $T$ has weak elimination of imaginaries but not elimination of finite imaginaries.
In this paper we study elimination of imaginaries in some classes of henselian valued fields of equicharacteristic zero and residue field algebraically closed. The results are sensitive to the complexity of the value group. We focus first in the case where the ordered abelian group has finite spines, and then prove a better result for the dp-minimal case. An ordered abelian with finite spines weakly eliminates imaginaries once we add sorts for the quotient groups $Γ/ Δ$ for each definable convex subgroup $Δ$, and sorts for the quotient groups $Γ/ Δ+ lΓ$ where $Δ$ is a definable convex subgroup…
It is shown that the countably infinite dimensional pointed vector space (the vector space equipped with a constant) over a finite field has infinitely many first order definable reducts. This implies that the countable homogeneous Boolean-algebra has infinitely many reducts. Our construction over the 2-element field is related to the Reed--Muller codes.
