Many noncompact hyperbolic 3-manifolds are topologically complements of links in the 3-sphere. Generalizing to dimension 4, we construct a dozen examples of noncompact hyperbolic 4-manifolds, all of which are topologically complements of varying numbers of tori and Klein bottles in the 4-sphere. Finite covers of some of those manifolds are then shown to be complements of tori and Klein bottles in other simply-connected closed 4-manifolds. All the examples are based on a construction of Ratcliffe and Tschantz, who produced 1171 noncompact hyperbolic 4-manifolds of minimal volume. Our examples are finite covers of some of those manifolds.
This article proves that the parity of the number of Klein-bottle leaves in a smooth cooriented taut foliation is invariant under smooth deformations within taut foliations, provided that every Klein-bottle leaf involved in the counting has non-trivial linear holonomy.
We consider the question of how many essential Seifert Klein bottles with common boundary slope a knot in S^3 can bound, up to ambient isotopy. We prove that any hyperbolic knot in S^3 bounds at most six Seifert Klein bottles with a given boundary slope. The Seifert Klein bottles in a minimal projection of hyperbolic pretzel knots of length 3 are shown to be unique and pi_1-injective, with surgery along their boundary slope producing irreducible toroidal manifolds. The cable knots which bound essential Seifert Klein bottles are classified; their Seifert Klein bottles are shown to be non-pi_1-i…
In this paper we provide a classification of fundamental group elements representing simple closed curves on the punctured Klein bottle, Similar to the Birman-Series classification of curves on the punctured torus[1]. In the process, an explicit description of the mapping class group is given. We then apply this to give a counterexample the simple loop conjecture for representations from the Klein bottle group to PGL(2,R).
We study which closed, connected, orientable three-manifolds $X$ containing a Klein bottle arise as integral Dehn surgery along a knot in $S^3$. Such $X$ are presentable as a gluing of the twisted $I$-bundle over the Klein bottle to a knot manifold, and we use a variety of Heegaard Floer type invariants to generate surgery obstructions. Suppose that $X$ is $8$-surgery along a genus two knot, and arises by gluing the twisted $I$-bundle over the Klein bottle to an $S^3$ knot complement. We show that $X$ is an L-space, it must be the dihedral manifold $\left(-1; \tfrac{1}{2}, \tfrac{1}{2}, \tfrac…
Let M be a compact, connected, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold and T' an incompressible torus boundary component of M such that the pair (M,T') is not cabled. By a result of C. Gordon, if S and T are incompressible punctured tori in M with boundary on T' and boundary slopes at distance d, then d is at most 8, and the cases where d=6,7,8 are very few and classified. We give a simplified proof of this result (or rather, of its reduction process), based on an improved estimate for the maximum possible number of mutually parallel negative edges in the graphs of intersection of S and T. We also …
Let $M$ be a topological space that admits a free involution $τ$, and let $N$ be a topological space. A homotopy class $β\in [ M,N ]$ is said to have {\it the Borsuk-Ulam property with respect to $τ$} if for every representative map $f: M \to N$ of $β$, there exists a point $x \in M$ such that $f(τ(x))= f(x)$. In this paper, we determine the homotopy classes of maps from the $2$-torus $T^2$ to the Klein bottle $K^2$ that possess the Borsuk-Ulam property with respect to a free involution $τ_1$ of $T^2$ for which the orbit space is $T^2$. Our results are given in terms of a certain family of hom…
We present enumerations of a class of maps on Klein bottle which give rise to semi-equivelar maps. Semi-equivelar maps are generalizations of equivelar maps. There are eleven types of semi-equivelar maps on the Klein bottle. These are of the types $\{3^{6}\}$, $\{4^{4}\}$, $\{6^{3}\}$, $\{3^{3},$ $4^{2}\}$, $\{3^{2},$ $4,$ $3,$ $4\}$, $\{3,$ $6,$ $3,$ $6\}$, $\{3^{4}, 6\}$, $\{4,$ $8^{2}\}$, $\{3, 12^{2}\}$, $\{4,$ $6,$ $12\}$, $\{3,$ $4,$ $6,$ $4\}$. In this article, we attempt to classify these maps.
Let $M$ be a topological space that admits a free involution $τ$, and let $N$ be a topological space. A homotopy class $β\in [ M,N ]$ is said to have the Borsuk-Ulam property with respect to $τ$ if for every representative map $f: M \to N$ of $β$, there exists a point $x \in M$ such that $f(τ(x))= f(x)$. We investigate the properties of knots in S^3 which bound Klein bottles, such that a pushoff of the knot has zero linking number with the knot, i.e. has zero framing. This is motivated by the many results in the literature regarding slice knots of genus one, for example, the existence of homologically essential zero self-linking simple closed curves on genus one Seifert surfaces for algebraically slice knots. Given a knot K bounding a Klein bottle F with zero framing, we show that J, the core of the orientation-preserving band in any disk-band form of F, has zero self-linking. We prove that su…
Let M be a compact, connected, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold and T an incompressible torus boundary component of M such that the pair (M,T) is not cabled. In the paper "Toroidal and Klein bottle boundary slopes" [arXiv:math/0601034] by the author it was established that for any K-incompressible tori F,F' in (M,T) which intersect in graphs G in F and G' in F', the maximal number of mutually parallel, consecutive, negative edges that may appear in G is n'+1, where n' is the number of boundary components of F'. In this paper we show that the correct such bound is n'+2, give a partial classif…
Semi-Equivelar maps are generalizations of maps on the surfaces of Archimedean solids to surfaces other than the $2$-sphere. The well known 11 types of normal tilings of the plane suggest the possible types of semi-equivelar maps on the torus and the Klein bottle. In this article we classify (up to isomorphism) semi-equivelar maps on the torus and the Klein bottle with few vertices.
It is shown that an embedded Lagrangian Klein bottle represents a non-trivial mod 2 homology class in a compact symplectic four-manifold $(X,ω)$ with $c_1(X)\cdot[ω]>0$. (In versions 1 and 2, the last assumption was missing. A counterexample to this general claim and the first proof of the corrected result have been found by Vsevolod Shevchishin.) As a corollary one obtains that the Klein bottle does not admit a Lagrangian embedding into the standard symplectic four-space.
A proof of non-existence of Lagrangian embeddings of the Klein bottle K in \CP^2 is given. We exploit the existence of a special embedding of K in a symplectic Lefschetz pencil on \CP^2 and study its monodromy. As the main technical tool, we develop the theory of mapping class groups, considered as quotients of special Artin braid groups, and obtain some new results about combinatorial structure of such groups.
Suppose you have a nonorientable Lagrangian surface L in a symplectic 4-manifold. How far can you deform the symplectic form before the smooth isotopy class of L contains no Lagrangians? I solve this question for a particular Lagrangian Klein bottle. I also discuss some related conjectures.
A triangulation of a connected closed surface is called weakly regular if the action of its automorphism group on its vertices is transitive. A triangulation of a connected closed surface is called degree-regular if each of its vertices have the same degree. Clearly, a weakly regular triangulation is degree-regular. In 1999, Lutz has classified all the weakly regular triangulations on at most 15 vertices. In 2001, Datta and Nilakantan have classified all the degree-regular triangulations of closed surfaces on at most 11 vertices. In this article, we have proved that any degree-regular triangul…
The Generalized Smale Conjecture asserts that if M is a closed 3-manifold with constant positive curvature, then the inclusion of the group of isometries into the group of diffeomorphisms is a homotopy equivalence. For the 3-sphere, this was the classical Smale Conjecture proved by A. Hatcher. N. Ivanov proved the Generalized Smale Conjecture for the M which contain a 1-sided Klein bottle and such that no Seifert fibering is nonsingular on the complement of any vertical Klein bottle. We prove it in all remaining cases containing a one-sided Klein bottle, except for the lens space L(4,1).
Via a computer search, Altshuler and Steinberg found that there are 1296 +1 combinatorial 3-manifolds on nine vertices, of which only one is non-sphere. This exceptional 3-manifold $K^{3}_{9}$ triangulates the twisted $S^{2}$-bundle over $S^{1}$. It was first constructed by Walkup. In this paper, we present a computer-free proof of the uniqueness of this non-sphere combinatorial 3-manifold. As opposed to the computer-generated proof, ours does not require wading through all the 9-vertex 3-spheres. As a preliminary result, we also show that any 9-vertex combinatorial 3-manifold is equivalent by…
In this paper, we show how to construct graph theoretical models of n-dimensional continuous objects and manifolds. These models retain topological properties of their continuous counterparts. An LCL collection of n-cells in Euclidean space is introduced and investigated. If an LCL collection of n-cells is a cover of a continuous n-dimensional manifold then the intersection graph of this cover is a digital closed n-dimensional manifold with the same topology as its continuous counterpart. As an example, we prove that the digital model of a continuous n-dimensional sphere is a digital n-sphere …
Given a hyperelliptic Klein surface, we construct companion Klein bottles, extending our technique of companion tori already exploited by the authors in the genus 2 case. Bavard's short loops on such companion surfaces are studied in relation to the original surface so to improve a systolic inequality of Gromov's. A basic idea is to use length bounds for loops on a companion Klein bottle, and then analyze how curves transplant to the original nonorientable surface. We exploit the real structure on the orientable double cover by applying the coarea inequality to the distance function from the r…
Considering a solid 3-dimensional Klein bottle and a collaring of its boundary, can we extend a generic $C^\infty$ non-singular function defined on the collaring to the full solid Klein bottle without critical points? We give a condition on the Reeb graph of the given function that is necessary and sufficient for the existence of such a non-singular extension.
The automorphisms of a two-generator free group acting on the space of orientation-preserving isometric actions of on hyperbolic 3-space defines a dynamical system. Those actions which preserve a hyperbolic plane but not an orientation on that plane is an invariant subsystem, which reduces to an action on R^3 by polynomial automorphisms preserving the cubic polynomial and an area form on the level surfaces. We describe the dynamical decomposition of this action. The domain of discontinuity of this action corresponds to geometric structures: either complete hyperbolic structures on the 2-holed …
