We show there is a symplectic conifold transition of a projective 3-fold which is not deformation equivalent to any Kaehler manifold. The key ingredient is Mori's classification of extremal rays on smooth projective 3-folds. It follows that there is a Lagrangian sphere in a projective variety which is not the vanishing cycle of any Kaehler degeneration, answering a question of Donaldson.

Open Gromov-Witten invariants and SYZ under local conifold transitions

For a local Calabi-Yau manifold which is a smoothing of toric Gorenstein singularity, this paper computes the open Gromov-Witten invariants of a generic fiber of the special Lagrangian fibration constructed by Gross and thereby constructs its SYZ mirror. Moreover it derives a relation for the generating function of open Gromov-Witten invariants of the local Calabi-Yau manifold and that of its conifold transition.

Conifold transitions via affine geometry and mirror symmetry

Mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau manifolds can be understood via a Legendre duality between a pair of certain affine manifolds with singularities called tropical manifolds. In this article, we study conifold transitions from the point of view of Gross and Siebert. We introduce the notions of tropical nodal singularity, tropical conifolds, tropical resolutions and smoothings. We interpret known global obstructions to the complex smoothing and symplectic small resolution of compact nodal Calabi-Yaus in terms of certain tropical $2$-cycles containing the nodes in their associated tropical conifolds.…

Topology of certain symplectic conifold transitions of $CP^{1}$-bundles

In this paper, we prove the existence of certain symplectic conifold transitions on all $CP^{1}$-bundles over symplectic 4--manifolds, which generalizes Smith, Thomas and Yau's examples of symplectic conifold transitions on trivial $CP^{1}$-bundles over Kähler surfaces. Our main result is to determine the diffeomorphism types of such symplectic conifold transitions of $CP^{1}$-bundles. In particular, this implies that in the case of trivial $CP^{1}$-bundles over projective surfaces, Smith, Thomas and Yau's examples of symplectic conifold transitions are diffeomorphic to Kähler 3--folds.

Geometric transitions and SYZ mirror symmetry

We prove that the punctured generalized conifolds and punctured orbifolded conifolds are mirror symmetric under the SYZ program with quantum corrections. This mathematically confirms the gauge-theoretic prediction by Aganagic-Karch-Lüst-Miemiec, and also provides a supportive evidence to Morrison's conjecture that geometric transitions are reversed under mirror symmetry.

Symplectic conifold transitions

We introduce a symplectic surgery in six dimensions which collapses Lagrangian three-spheres and replaces them by symplectic two-spheres. Under mirror symmetry it corresponds to an operation on complex 3-folds studied by Clemens, Friedman and Tian. We describe several examples which show that there are either many more Calabi-Yau manifolds (e.g. rigid ones) than previously thought or there exist ``symplectic Calabi-Yaus'' -- non-Kaehler symplectic 6-folds with c_1=0. Singular symplectic flops and Ruan cohomology

In this paper, we study the symplectic geometry of singular conifolds of the finite group quotient $$ W_r=\{(x,y,z,t)|xy-z^{2r}+t^2=0 \}/μ_r(a,-a,1,0), r\geq 1, $$ which we call orbi-conifolds. The related orbifold symplectic conifold transition and orbifold symplectic flops are constructed. Let $X$ and $Y$ be two symplectic orbifolds connected by such a flop. We study orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of exceptional classes on $X$ and $Y$ and show that they have isomorphic Ruan cohomologies. Hence, we verify a conjecture of Ruan.

Symplectic Calabi-Yau manifolds, minimal surfaces and the hyperbolic geometry of the conifold

Given an SO(3)-bundle with connection, the associated two-sphere bundle carries a natural closed 2-form. Asking that this be symplectic gives a curvature inequality first considered by Reznikov. We study this inequality in the case when the base has dimension four, with three main aims. Firstly, we use this approach to construct symplectic six-manifolds with c_1=0 which are never Kahler; e.g., we produce such manifolds with b_1=0=b_3 and also with c_2.omega <0, answering questions posed by Smith-Thomas-Yau.
