Recently twisted and higher order Alexander polynomials were used by Cochran, Harvey, Friedl--Kim and Turaev to give lower bounds on the Thurston norm. We first show how Reidemeister torsion relates to these Alexander polynomials. We then give lower bounds on the Thurston norm in terms of the Reidemeister torsion which contain and extend all the above lower bounds and give an elegant reformulation of the bounds of Cochran, Harvey and Turaev. We show some computations on representations of the fundamental group in SL(2;C) and Reidemeister torsion for a homology 3-sphere obtained by Dehn surgery along the figure-eight knot. This is the second version. We recorrected several errors in the first version.
On an odd-dimensional oriented hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with strongly acyclic coefficient systems, we derive a formula relating analytic torsion with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification of the manifold. For a non-compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with cusps we prove an explicit formula that relates the regularized analytic torsion associated to the even symmetric powers of the standard representation of SL_2(C) to the corresponding Reidemeister torsion. Our proof rests on an expression of the analytic torsion in terms of special values of Ruelle zeta functions as well as on recent work of Pere Menal-Ferrer and Joan Porti.

Let $M$ be a triangulated, oriented, connected compact $3$-manifold with connected non-empty boundary. Such a manifold admits a unique decomposition into $\triangle$-prime $3$-manifolds. In this paper, we show that the adjoint Reidemeister torsion has a multiplicative property on the disk sum decomposition of compact $3$-manifolds without a corrective term.

In a previous paper, the second author defined integer-valued functions delta_n on the first cohomology of a 3-manifold, generalizing McMullen's Alexander norm. It was shown that these functions give lower bounds on the Thurston norm. In this paper, we reformulate these invariants in terms of Reidemeister torsion over a non-commutative multivariable Laurent polynomial ring. This allows us to show that these functions are semi-norms.

We study two sorts of actions on the space of conjugacy classes of irreducible $SU_2$-representations of a knot group. One of them is an involution which comes from the algebraic structure of $SU_2$ and the other is the action by the outer automorphism group of the knot group. In particular, we consider them on an 1-dimensional smooth part of the space, which is canonically oriented and metrized via a Reidemeister torsion volume form. As an application we show that the Reidemeister torsion function on the 1-dimensional subspace has symmetry about the metrization.

We give an extension of Fox's formula of the Alexander polynomial for double branched covers over the three-sphere. Our formula provides the Reidemeister torsion of a double branched cover along a knot for a non-trivial one dimensional representation by the product of two factors derived from the knot group. One of the factors is determined by the twisted Alexander polynomial and the other is determined by a rational function on the character variety. As an application, we show that these products distinguish isotopy classes of two-bridge knots up to mirror images.

Let $M_n$ be a homology 3-sphere obtained by $\frac1n$-Dehn surgery along a $(p,q)$-torus knot. We consider a polynomial $σ_{(p,q,n)}(t)$ whose zeros are the inverses of the Reideimeister torsion of $M_n$ for $\mathit{SL}(2;\mathbb{C})$-irreducible representations. We give an explicit formula of this polynomial by using Tchebychev polynomials of the first kind. Further we also give a 3-term relations of these polynomials.
We study lens space surgeries along two different families of 2-component links, denoted by $A_{m,n}$ and $B_{p,q}$, related with the rational homology 4-ball used in J.\ Park's (generalized) rational blow down. We determine which coefficient $r$ of the knotted component of the link yields a lens space by Dehn surgery.
