The construction of the COMBINATORIAL data for a surface with n vertices of maximal genus is a classical problem: The maximal genus g=[(n-3)(n-4)/12] was achieved in the famous ``Map Color Theorem'' by Ringel et al. (1968). We present the nicest one of Ringel's constructions, for the case when n is congruent to 7 mod 12, but also an alternative construction, essentially due to Heffter (1898), which easily and explicitly yields surfaces of genus g ~ 1/16 n^2.
For GEOMETRIC (polyhedral) surfaces with n vertices the maximal genus is not known. The current record is g ~ n log n, due to McMullen, Schulz & Wills (1983). We present these surfaces with a new construction: We find them in Schlegel diagrams of ``neighborly cubical 4-polytopes,'' as constructed by Joswig & Ziegler (2000).
Let $S_{g,n}$ be a surface of genus $g > 1$ with $n>0$ punctures equipped with a complete hyperbolic cusp metric. Then it can be uniquely realized as the boundary metric of an ideal Fuchsian polyhedron. In the present paper we give a new variational proof of this result. We also give an alternative proof of the existence and uniqueness of a hyperbolic polyhedral metric with prescribed curvature in a given conformal class.
We introduce the wedge product of two polytopes. The wedge product is described in terms of inequality systems, in terms of vertex coordinates as well as purely combinatorially, from the corresponding data of its constituents. The wedge product construction can be described as an iterated ``subdirect product'' as introduced by McMullen (1976); it is dual to the ``wreath product'' construction of Joswig and Lutz (2005). One particular instance of the wedge product construction turns out to be especially interesting: The wedge products of polygons with simplices contain certain combinatorially r…
Polyhedral surfaces are fundamental objects in architectural geometry and industrial design. Whereas closeness of a given mesh to a smooth reference surface and its suitability for numerical simulations were already studied extensively, the aim of our work is to find and to discuss suitable assessments of smoothness of polyhedral surfaces that only take the geometry of the polyhedral surface itself into account. Motivated by analogies to classical differential geometry, we propose a theory of smoothness of polyhedral surfaces including suitable notions of normal vectors, tangent planes, asympt…
Polyhedral Kähler surfaces are a class of complex surfaces, which are flat everywhere except on a two-dimensional skeleton. They are defined as a generalisation of the "gluing a polygon side by side" construction of flat Riemann surfaces. In this article, we introduce two classes of polyhedral Kähler surfaces with trivial holonomy: products of polyhedral Kähler curves with zero holonomy and ramified coverings of tori, and prove that none of these classes is contained in the other. Existence of other types of polyhedral Kähler surfaces is still open.
We study hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces with faces isometric to regular hyperbolic polygons satisfying that the total angles at vertices are at least $2π.$ The combinatorial information of these surfaces is shown to be identified with that of Euclidean polyhedral surfaces with negative combinatorial curvature everywhere. We prove that there is a gap between areas of non-smooth hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces and the area of smooth hyperbolic surfaces. The numerical result for the gap is obtained for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces, homeomorphic to the double torus, whose 1-skeletons are cubic gr…
A discrete conformality for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces is introduced in this paper. This discrete conformality is shown to be computable. It is proved that each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface is discrete conformal to a unique hyperbolic polyhedral metric with a given discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula. Furthermore, the hyperbolic polyhedral metric with given curvature can be obtained using a discrete Yamabe flow with surgery. In particular, each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface with negative Euler characteristic is discrete conformal to a u…
A discrete conformality for polyhedral metrics on surfaces is introduced in this paper which generalizes earlier work on the subject. It is shown that each polyhedral metric on a surface is discrete conformal to a constant curvature polyhedral metric which is unique up to scaling. Furthermore, the constant curvature metric can be found using a discrete Yamabe flow with surgery.
A Fuchsian polyhedron in hyperbolic space is a polyhedral surface invariant under the action of a Fuchsian group of isometries (i.e. a group of isometries leaving globally invariant a totally geodesic surface, on which it acts cocompactly). The induced metric on a convex Fuchsian polyhedron is isometric to a hyperbolic metric with conical singularities of positive singular curvature on a compact surface of genus greater than one. We prove that these metrics are actually realised by exactly one convex Fuchsian polyhedron (up to global isometries). This extends a famous theorem of A.D. Alexandro…
For a finite planar graph, it associates with some metric spaces, called (regular) spherical polyhedral surfaces, by replacing faces with regular spherical polygons in the unit sphere and gluing them edge-to-edge. We consider the class of planar graphs which admit spherical polyhedral surfaces with the curvature bounded below by 1 in the sense of Alexandrov, i.e. the total angle at each vertex is at most $2π$. We classify all spherical tilings with regular spherical polygons, i.e. total angles at vertices are exactly $2π$. We prove that for any graph in this class which does not admit a spheri…
Deciding realizability of a given polyhedral map on a (compact, connected) surface belongs to the hard problems in discrete geometry, from the theoretical, the algorithmic, and the practical point of view. In this paper, we present a heuristic algorithm for the realization of simplicial maps, based on the intersection edge functional. The heuristic was used to find geometric realizations in R^3 for all vertex-minimal triangulations of the orientable surfaces of genus g=3 and g=4. Moreover, for the first time, examples of simplicial polyhedra in R^3 of genus 5 with 12 vertices were obtained.
In the end of the 19th century Bricard discovered a phenomenon of flexible polyhedra, that is, polyhedra with rigid faces and hinges at edges that admit non-trivial flexes. One of the most important results in this field is a theorem of Sabitov asserting that the volume of a flexible polyhedron is constant during the flexion. In this paper we study flexible polyhedral surfaces in the 3-space two-periodic with respect to translations by two non-colinear vectors that can vary continuously during the flexion. The main result is that the period lattice of a flexible two-periodic surface homeomorph…
We prove that any metric surface (that is, metric space homeomorphic to a 2-manifold with boundary) with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure is the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of polyhedral surfaces with controlled geometry. We use this result, together with the classical uniformization theorem, to prove that any metric surface homeomorphic to the 2-sphere with finite Hausdorff 2-measure admits a weakly quasiconformal parametrization by the Riemann sphere, answering a question of Rajala-Wenger. These results have been previously established by the authors under the assumption that the metric surface…
We explore the perspective of a bug living on the two-dimensional surface of a polyhedron. Images of various kinds of effects like lensing and cloaking are shown via color pictures of three viewpoints: the first person perspective of the bug, a map of the bug's viewpoint, and a look at the bug on the embedded polyhedron from a three-dimensional exterior viewer. The pictures were constructed by computing the exponential map of a polyhedron by cutting and rotating faces into the tangent plane of the bug.
This article presents an improvement and extension of the heuristic first presented by Hougardy, Lutz, and Zelke in 2010 for realizing triangulated orientable surfaces with few vertices by a simplex-wise linear embedding. The improvement consists in the applicability to non-orientable surfaces (simplex-wise linear immersions) as well as symmetric realizations. With the help of our algorithm, numerous - often symmetric - realizations of non-orientable surfaces with the minimal number or few vertices have been obtained for the first time. These examples include the the Projective Plane with one …
We prove that, both in the hyperbolic and spherical 3-spaces, there exist nonconvex compact boundary-free polyhedral surfaces without selfintersections which admit nontrivial continuous deformations preserving all dihedral angles and study properties of such polyhedral surfaces. In particular, we prove that the volume of the domain, bounded by such a polyhedral surface, is necessarily constant during such a deformation while, for some families of polyhedral surfaces, the surface area, the total mean curvature, and the Gauss curvature of some vertices are nonconstant during deformations that pr…
The paper is centered around a new proof of the infinitesimal rigidity of convex polyhedra. The proof is based on studying derivatives of the discrete Hilbert-Einstein functional on the space of "warped polyhedra" with a fixed metric on the boundary. This approach is in a sense dual to using derivatives of the volume in order to prove the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity of convex polyhedra, which deals with deformations that preserve face normals and face areas. In the spherical and in the hyperbolic-de Sitter space, there is a perfect duality between the Hilbert-Einstein functional and the volum…
