In this talk we introduce several topics in combinatorial number theory which are related to groups; the topics include combinatorial aspects of covers of groups by cosets, and also restricted sumsets and zero-sum problems on abelian groups. A survey of known results and open problems on the topics is given in a popular way.
Keller proposed a combinatorial conjecture on construction of an n-by-infinite matrix, which comes from showing the existence of many orbits of different sizes in certain linear group actions. He proved it for the case n=4, and we show that conjecture is true in the general case. We also propose a combinatorial game version of the conjecture which even further generalizes the problem.
We consider a combinatorial problem occurring naturally in a group theoretical setting and provide a constructive solution in a special case. More precisely, in 1999 the author established a logarithmic bound for the derived length of the quotient of a finite solvable group modulo the second Fitting subgroup in terms of the number of irreducible character degrees of the group. Along the way, in two key lemmas an inductive process was used which at its core required a solution of some weak form of the combinatorial problem studied in this paper. This problem can be stated and studied without an…
The regular objects in various categories, such as maps, hypermaps or covering spaces, can be identified with the normal subgroups N of a given group Γ, with quotient group isomorphic to Γ/N. It is shown how to enumerate such objects with a given finite automorphism group G, how to represent them all as quotients of a single regular object U(G), and how they are acted on by the outer automorphism group of Γ. Examples constructed include kaleidoscopic maps with trinity symmetry.
We introduce a combinatorial characterization of simpliciality for arrangements of hyperplanes. We then give a sharp upper bound for the number of hyperplanes of such an arrangement in the projective plane over a finite field, and present some series of arrangements related to the known arrangements in characteristic zero. We further enumerate simplicial arrangements with given symmetry groups. Finally, we determine all finite complex reflection groups affording combinatorially simplicial arrangements. It turns out that combinatorial simpliciality coincides with inductive freeness for finite c…
We introduce generalised orbit algebras. The purpose here is to measure how some combinatorial properties can characterize the action of a group of permutations on the subsets. The similarity with orbit algebras is such that it took the author a long time to find a generalised orbit algebra not arising from a permutation group.
Combinatorial transfer: a new method for constructing infinite families of nonabelian difference sets, partial difference sets, and relative difference sets
We show that double cosets of the infinite symmetric group with respect to some special subgroups admit natural structures of semigroups. We interpret elements of such semigroups in combinatorial terms (chips, colored graphs, two-dimensional surfaces with polygonal tiling) and describe explicitly the multiplications.
We study combinatorial modulus on boundaries of hyperbolic Coxeter groups. We give new examples of hyperbolic groups whose boundary satisfies a combinatorial version of the Loewner property, and prove Cannon's conjecture for Coxeter groups. We also establish some connections with l^p cohomology.
Combinatorial methods (or methods of elementary transformations) came to group theory from low-dimensional topology in the beginning of the century. Soon after that, combinatorial group theory became an independent area with its own powerful techniques. On the other hand, combinatorial commutative algebra emerged in the sixties, after Buchberger introduced what is now known as Gröbner bases. The purpose of this survey is to show how ideas from one of those areas contribute to the other.
In the present paper, we show that many combinatorial and topological objects, such as maps, hypermaps, three-dimensional pavings, constellations and branched coverings of the two--sphere admit any given finite automorphism group. This enhances the already known results by Frucht, Cori -- Machì, Širáň -- Škoviera, and other authors. We also provide a more universal technique for showing that ``any finite automorphism group is possible'', that is applicable to wider classes or, in contrast, to more particular sub-classes of said combinatorial and geometric objects. Finally, we show that any giv…
An equivalence relation in the symmetric group, where is a positive integer has been considered. An algorithm for calculation of the number of the equivalence classes by this relation for arbitrary integer has been described.

We give a suitable definition of the concept of rational complex and prove that every rational exponential group is the fundamental group of some such a complex. In this framework, we prove that the variety of rational exponential groups is a Schreier variety.
It has been recently proved (by Croot, Lev and Pach and the subsequent work by Ellenberg and Gijswijt) that for a group $G=G_0^n$, where $G_0\ne \{1,-1\}^m$ is a fixed finite Abelian group and $n$ is large, any subset $A$ without 3-progressions (triples $x,y,z$ of different elements with $xy=z^2$) contains at most $|G|^{1-c}$ elements, where $c>0$ is a constant depending only on $G_0$. This is known to be false when $G$ is, say, large cyclic group. The aim of this note is to show that algebraic property which corresponds to this difference is the following: in the first case a group algebra $\…
We introduce the notion of weakly systolic complexes and groups, and initiate regular studies of them. Those are simplicial complexes with nonpositive-curvature-like properties and groups acting on them geometrically. We characterize weakly systolic complexes as simply connected simplicial complexes satisfying some local combinatorial conditions. We provide several classes of examples --- in particular systolic groups and CAT(-1) cubical groups are weakly systolic. We present applications of the theory, concerning Gromov hyperbolic groups, Coxeter groups and systolic groups.
We give an algorithm which computes a presentation for a subgroup, denoted $\AM_{g,1,p}$, of the automorphism group of a free group. It is known that $\AM_{g,1,p}$ is isomorphic to the mapping-class group of an orientable genus-$g$ surface with one boundary component and $p$ punctures. We define a variation of Auter space.
In this article we give a classification of the sub-groups in PSL(2,Z) and of the conjugacy classes of these sub-groups by the mean of an combinatorial invariant: some trivalent diagrams (dotted or not). We give explicit formulae enabling to count the number of isomorphism classes of these structures and of some of their variations, as function of the number of their arcs. Until now, the counting of non-dotted diagrams was an open problem, for it gives also the number of unrooted combinatorial maps, triangular or general respectively. The article ends with the description of a high performance…
We prove a combination theorem for hyperbolic groups, in the case of groups acting on complexes displaying combinatorial features reminiscent of non-positive curvature. Such complexes include for instance weakly systolic complexes and C'(1/6) small cancellation polygonal complexes. Our proof involves constructing a potential Gromov boundary for the resulting groups and analyzing the dynamics of the action on the boundary in order to use Bowditch's characterization of hyperbolicity. A key ingredient is the introduction of a combinatorial property that implies a weak form of non-positive curvatu…
We give a combinatorial description of general homotopy groups of $k$-dimensional spheres with $k\geq3$ as well as those of Moore spaces. For $n>k\geq 3,$ we construct a finitely generated group defined by explicit generators and relations, whose center is exactly $π_n(S^k)$.
This is the first installment of a book on combinatorial and geometric group theory from the topological point of view. This is a classical subject. The installment contains Chapters 1, 3 and 4, and there are nine chapters in total: 1. Combinatorial Complexes 2. Topological Invariants 3. Coverings 4. Galois Theory 5. Generators and Relations 6. The Topological Dictionary 7. Amalgams 8. The Arboreal Dictionary 9. Ends.
We discuss metric and combinatorial properties of Thompson's group T, including normal forms for elements and unique tree pair diagram representatives. We relate these properties to those of Thompson's group F when possible, and highlight combinatorial differences between the two groups. We define a set of unique normal forms for elements of T arising from minimal factorizations of elements into natural pieces. We show that the number of carets in a reduced representative of an element of T estimates the word length, and that F is undistorted in T. We describe how to recognize torsion elements…
This paper investigates the asymptotic behaviour of the minimal number of generators of finite index subgroups in residually finite groups. We analyze three natural classes of groups: amenable groups, groups possessing an infinite soluble normal subgroup and virtually free groups. As a tool for the amenable case we generalize Lackenby's trichotomy theorem on finitely presented groups.
We construct several topological groups with very strong combinatorial properties. In particular, we give simple examples of subgroups of the real line R (thus strictly o-bounded) which have the Hurewicz property but are not sigma-compact, and show that the product of two o-bounded subgroups of R^N may fail to be o-bounded, even when they satisfy the stronger property S1(Borel_Omega,Borel_Omega). This solves a problem of Tkacenko and Hernandez, and extends independent solutions of Krawczyk and Michalewski and of Banakh, Nickolas, and Sanchis. We also construct separable metrizable groups G of …
The main achievement of this thesis is an algorithm which given a finite group presentation and natural numbers n and k, computes all the relators of length and area up to n and k respectively. The complexity of this algorithm is better by a factor which is over-exponential than that of classical methods using van Kampen diagrams.
In this article, we shall generalize a theorem due to Frobenius in group theory, which asserts that if $p$ is a prime and $p^{r}$ divides the order of a finite group, then the number of subgroups of order $p^{r}$ is $\equiv$ 1(mod $p$). Interestingly, our proof is purely combinatorial and does not use much group theory.
A proof of non-existence of Lagrangian embeddings of the Klein bottle K in \CP^2 is given. We exploit the existence of a special embedding of K in a symplectic Lefschetz pencil on \CP^2 and study its monodromy. As the main technical tool, we develop the theory of mapping class groups, considered as quotients of special Artin braid groups, and obtain some new results about combinatorial structure of such groups.
In all possible cases, we prove that local embeddings between two curve complexes whose complexities do not increase from domain to codomain are induced by surface homeomorphism. This is our first main result. From this we can deduce our second, a strong local co-Hopfian result for mapping class groups.
We review some basic methodologies from pattern recognition that can be applied to helping solve combinatorial problems in free group theory. We illustrate how this works with recognizing Whitehead minimal words in free groups of rank 2. The methodologies reviewed include how to form feature vectors, principal components, distance classifers, linear classifiers, regression classifiers, Fisher linear discriminant, support vector machines, quantizing, classification trees, and clustering techniques.
Let X be a building of arbitrary type. A compactification $C_r(X)$ of the set Res(X) of spherical residues of X is introduced. We prove that it coincides with the horofunction compactification of Res(X) endowed with a natural combinatorial distance which we call the root-distance. Points of $C_r(X)$ admit amenable stabilisers in Aut(X) and conversely, any amenable subgroup virtually fixes a point in $C_r(X)$. In addition, it is shown that, provided Aut(X)is transitive enough, this compactification also coincides with the group-theoretic compactification constructed using the Chabauty topology …
This is a survey of recent progress in several areas of combinatorial algebra. We consider combinatorial problems about free groups, polynomial algebras, free associative and Lie algebras. Our main idea is to study automorphisms and, more generally, homomorphisms of various algebraic systems by means of their action on ``very small" sets of elements, as opposed to a traditional approach of studying their action on subsystems (like subgroups, normal subgroups; subalgebras, ideals, etc.) We will show that there is a lot that can be said about a homomorphism, given its action on just a single ele…
The paper contains a survey of train constructions for infinite symmetric groups and related groups. For certain pairs (a group $G$, a subgroup $K$), we construct categories, whose morphisms are two-dimensional surfaces tiled by polygons and colored in a certain way. A product of morphisms is a gluing of combinatorial bordisms. For a unitary representation of $G$ we assign a functor from the category of bordisms to the category of Hilbert spaces and bounded operators. The construction has numerous variations, instead of surfaces there arise also one-dimensional objects of Brauer diagram type, …
Let $w$ be a word in the free group of rank $n \in \mathbb{N}$ and let $\mathcal{V}(w)$ be the variety of groups defined by the law $w=1$. Define $\mathcal{V}(w^*)$ to be the class of all groups $G$ in which for any infinite subsets $X_1, ..., X_n$ there exist $x_i \in X_i$, $1\leq i\leq n$, such that $w(x_1, ..., x_n)=1$. Clearly, $\mathcal{V}(w) \cup \mathcal{F} \subseteq \mathcal{V}(w^*)$; $\mathcal{F}$ being the class of finite groups. In this paper, we investigate some words $w$ and some certain classes $\mathcal{P}$ of groups for which the equality $(\mathcal{V}(w) \cup \mathcal{F})\cap …
In this article groups of controlled characters of a combinatorial Hopf algebra are considered from the perspective of infinite-dimensional Lie theory. A character is controlled in our sense if it satisfies certain growth bounds, e.g.\ exponential growth. We study these characters for combinatorial Hopf algebras. Following Loday and Ronco, a combinatorial Hopf algebra is a graded and connected Hopf algebra which is a polynomial algebra with an explicit choice of basis (usually identified with combinatorial objects such as trees, graphs, etc.). If the growth bounds and the Hopf algebra are comp…
We study properties of the realizations of groups as the combinatorial automorphism group of a convex polytope. We show that for any non-abelian group $G$ with a central involution there is a centrally symmetric polytope with $G$ as its combinatorial automorphisms. We show that for each integer $n$, there are groups that cannot be realized as the combinatorial automorphisms of convex polytopes of dimension at most $n$. We also give an optimal lower bound for the dimension of the realization of a group as the group of isometries that preserves a convex polytope.
Group presentations are implicit descriptions of 2-dimensional cell complexes with only one vertex. While such complexes are usually sufficient for topological investigations of groups, multi-vertex complexes are often preferable when the focus shifts to geometric considerations. In this article, I show how to quickly describe the most important multi-vertex 2-complexes using a slight variation of the traditional group presentation. As an illustration I describe multi-vertex 2-complexes for torus knot groups and one-relator Artin groups from which their elementary properties are easily derived…
We give a short proof of the following theorem of Sang-hyun Kim: if $A(Γ)$ is a right-angled Artin group with defining graph $Γ$, then $A(Γ)$ contains a hyperbolic surface subgroup if $Γ$ contains an induced subgraph $\bar{C}_n$ for some $n \geq 5$, where $\bar{C}_n$ denotes the complement graph of an $n$-cycle. Furthermore, we give a new proof of Kim's co-contraction theorem.
After some excitement generated by recently suggested public key exchange protocols due to Anshel-Anshel-Goldfeld and Ko-Lee et al., it is a prevalent opinion now that the conjugacy search problem is unlikely to provide sufficient level of security if a braid group is used as the platform. In this paper we address the following questions: (1) whether choosing a different group, or a class of groups, can remedy the situation; (2) whether some other "hard" problem from combinatorial group theory can be used, instead of the conjugacy search problem, in a public key exchange protocol. Another ques…
We study combinatorial properties of virtual braid groups and we describe relations with finite type invariant theory for virtual knots and Yang-Baxter equations
We study some combinatorial properties of the word metric of Thompson's group F in the standard two generator finite presentation. We explore connections between the tree pair diagram representing an element w of F, its normal form in the infinite presentation, its word length, and minimal length representatives of it. We estimate word length in terms of the number and type of carets in the tree pair diagram and show sharpness of those estimates. In addition we explore some properties of the Cayley graph of F with respect to the two generator finite presentation. Namely, we exhibit the form of…
We prove that if a finitely presented group acts properly discontinuously, cocompactly and by isometries on a simply connected Riemannian manifold, then the Dehn function of the group and the corresponding filling function of the manifold are equivalent, in a sense described below.
Let $G$ be a finite group. We consider the problem of counting simultaneous conjugacy classes of $n$-tuples and simultaneous conjugacy classes of commuting $n$-tuples in $G$. Let $α_{G,n}$ denote the number of simultaneous conjugacy classes of $n$-tuples, and $β_{G,n}$ the number of simultaneous conjugacy classes of commuting $n$-tuples in $G$. The generating functions $A_G(t) = \sum_{n\geq 0} α_{G,n}t^n,$ and $B_G(t) = \sum_{n\geq 0} β_{G,n}t^n$ are rational functions of $t$. We show that $A_G(t)$ determines and is completely determined by the class equation of $G$. We show that $α_{G,n}$ gro…
We define several "standard" subgroups of the automorphism group Aut(G) of a partially commutative (right-angled Artin) group and use these standard subgroups to describe decompositions of Aut(G). If C is the commutation graph of G, we show how Aut(G) decomposes in terms of the connected components of C: obtaining a particularly clear decomposition theorem in the special case where C has no isolated vertices. If C has no vertices of a type we call dominated then we give a semi-direct decompostion of Aut(G) into a subgroup of locally conjugating automorphisms by the subgroup stabilising a certa…
A major open problem in current Galois theory is to characterize those profinite groups which appear as absolute Galois groups of various fields. Obtaining detailed knowledge of the structure of quotients and subgroup filtrations of Galois groups of $p$-extensions is an important step toward a solution. We illustrate several techniques for counting Galois $p$-extensions of various fields, including pythagorean fields and local fields. An expression for the number of extensions of a formally real pythagorean field having Galois group the dihedral group of order 8 is developed. We derive a formu…
In this paper we provide a framework for the study of isoperimetric problems in finitely generated group, through a combinatorial study of universal covers of compact simplicial complexes. We show that, when estimating filling functions, one can restrict to simplicial spheres of particular shapes, called "round" and "unfolded", provided that a bounded quasi-geodesic combing exists. We prove that the problem of estimating higher dimensional divergence as well can be restricted to round spheres. Applications of these results include a combinatorial analogy of the Federer--Fleming inequality for …
We investigate the rank gradient and growth of torsion in homology in residually finite groups. As a tool, we introduce a new complexity notion for generating sets, using measured groupoids and combinatorial cost. As an application we prove the vanishing of the above invariants for Farber sequences of subgroups of right angled groups. A group is right angled if it can be generated by a sequence of elements of infinite order such that any two consecutive elements commute. Most non-uniform lattices in higher rank simple Lie groups are right angled. We provide the first examples of uniform (co-co…
