The Swift-Hohenberg fluid convection system with both local and nonlocal nonlinearities under the influence of white noise is studied. The objective is to understand the difference in the dynamical behavior in both local and nonlocal cases. It is proved that when sufficiently many of its Fourier modes are forced, the system has a unique invariant measure, or equivalently, the dynamics is ergodic. Moreover, it is found that the number of modes to be stochastically excited for ensuring the ergodicity in the local Swift-Hohenberg system depends {\em only} on the Rayleigh number (i.e., it does not even depend on the random term itself), while this number for the nonlocal Swift-Hohenberg system relies additionally on the bound of the kernel in the nonlocal interaction (integral) term, and on the random term itself
In this paper the difference in the asymptotic dynamics between the nonlocal and local two-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg models is investigated. It is shown that the bounds for the dimensions of the global attractors for the nonlocal and local Swift-Hohenberg models differ by an absolute constant, which depends only on the Rayleigh number, and upper and lower bounds of the kernel of the nonlocal nonlinearity. Even when this kernel of the nonlocal operator is a constant function, the dimension bounds of the global attractors still differ by an absolute constant depending on the Rayleigh number.
We consider recurrent solutions of the nonautonomous modified Swift-Hohenberg equation $$u_t+Δ^2u+2Δu+au+b|\nabla u|^2+u^3=g(t,x).$$ We employ Conley index theory to show that, if the forcing $g:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow L^2(Ω)$ is a recurrent function, then there are at least two recurrent solutions in $H_0^2(Ω)$ under appropriate assumptions on the parameters $a$, $b$ and $g$.
Recent work on the behaviour of localised states in pattern forming partial differential equations has focused on the traditional model Swift-Hohenberg equation which, as a result of its simplicity, has additional structure --- it is variational in time and conservative in space. In this paper we investigate an extended Swift-Hohenberg equation in which non-variational and non-conservative effects play a key role. Our work concentrates on aspects of this much more complicated problem. Firstly we carry out the normal form analysis of the initial pattern forming instability that leads to small-a…
We consider the one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation coupled to a conservation law. As a parameter increases the system undergoes a Turing bifurcation. We study the dynamics near this bifurcation. First, we show that stationary, periodic solutions bifurcate from a homogeneous ground state. Second, we construct modulating traveling fronts which model an invasion of the unstable ground state by the periodic solutions. This provides a mechanism of pattern formation for the studied system. The existence proof uses center manifold theory for a reduction to a finite-dimensional problem. This is …
We present a rigorous analysis of the slow passage through a Turing bifurcation in the Swift-Hohenberg equation using a novel approach based on geometric blow-up. We show that the formally derived multiple scales ansatz which is known from classical modulation theory can be adapted for use in the fast-slow setting, by reformulating it as a blow-up transformation. This leads to dynamically simpler modulation equations posed in the blown-up space, via a formal procedure which directly extends the established approach to the time-dependent setting. The modulation equations take the form of non-au…
Upper semi-continuity of random attractors and existence of invariant measures for nonlocal stochastic Swift-Hohenberg equation with multiplicative noise
In this paper I will investigate the bifurcation and asymptotic behavior of solutions of the Swift-Hohenberg equation and the generalized Swift-Hohenberg equation with the Dirichlet boundary condition on a one- dimensional domain $(0,L)$. I will also study the bifurcation and stability of patterns in the n-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation with the odd-periodic and periodic boundary conditions. It is shown that each equation bifurcates from the trivial solution to an attractor, when the control parameter crosses the principal eigenvalue of the linearized equation. The local behavior of solu…
We study homoclinic orbits of the Swift-Hohenberg equation near a Hamiltonian-Hopf bifurcation. It is well known that in this case the normal form of the equation is integrable at all orders. Therefore the difference between the stable and unstable manifolds is exponentially small and the study requires a method capable to detect phenomena beyond all algebraic orders provided by the normal form theory. We propose an asymptotic expansion for an homoclinic invariant which quantitatively describes the transversality of the invariant manifolds. We perform high-precision numerical experiments to su…
We study the effect of domain growth on the orientation of striped phases in a Swift-Hohenberg equation. Domain growth is encoded in a step-like parameter dependence that allows stripe formation in a half plane, and suppresses patterns in the complement, while the boundary of the pattern-forming region is propagating with fixed normal velocity. We construct front solutions that leave behind stripes in the pattern-forming region that are parallel to or at a small oblique angle to the boundary. Technically, the construction of stripe formation parallel to the boundary relies on ill-posed, infini…
We consider a one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation coupled to a conservation law, where both equations contain additional dispersive terms breaking the reflection symmetry $x \mapsto -x$. This system exhibits a Turing instability and we study the dynamics close to the onset of this instability. First, we show that periodic traveling waves bifurcate from a homogeneous ground state. Second, fixing the bifurcation parameter close to the onset of instability, we construct modulating traveling fronts, which capture the process of pattern-formation by modeling the transition from the homogeneous…
The Swift-Hohenberg equation is ubiquitous in the study of bistable dynamics. In this paper, we study the dynamic transitions of the Swift-Hohenberg equation with a third-order dispersion term in one spacial dimension with a periodic boundary condition. As a control parameter crosses a critical value, the trivial stable equilibrium solution will lose its stability, and undergoes a dynamic transition to a new physical state, described by a local attractor. The main result of this paper is to fully characterize the type and detailed structure of the transition using dynamic transition theory. In…

In some pattern-forming systems, for some parameter values, patterns form with two wavelengths, while for other parameter values, there is only one wavelength. The transition between these can be organised by a codimension-three point at which the marginal stability curve has a quartic minimum. We develop a model equation to explore this situation, based on the Swift--Hohenberg equation; the model contains, amongst other things, snaking branches of patterns of one wavelength localised in a background of patterns of another wavelength. In the small-amplitude limit, the amplitude equation for th…
Stationary fronts connecting the trivial state and a cellular (distorted) hexagonal pattern in the Swift-Hohenberg equation with a quadratic-cubic nonlinearity are known to undergo a process of infinitely many folds as a parameter is varied, known as homoclinic snaking, where new hexagon cells are added to the core, leading to a region of infinitely-many, co-existing localized states. Outside the homoclinic snaking region, the hexagon fronts can invade the trivial state in a bursting fashion. In this paper, we use a far-field core decomposition to set up a numerical path-following routine to t…
We apply analytical and numerical methods to study the linear stability of stripe patterns in two generalizations of the two-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation that include coupling to a mean flow. A projection operator is included in our models to allow exact stripe solutions. In the generalized models, stripes become unstable to the skew-varicose, oscillatory skew-varicose and cross-roll instabilities, in addition to the usual Eckhaus and zigzag instabilities. We analytically derive stability boundaries for the skew-varicose instability in various cases, including several asymptotic limits…
In this paper, we carry out numerical bifurcation analysis of depinning of fronts near the homoclinic snaking region, involving a spatial stripe cellular pattern embedded in a quiescent state, in the two-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation with either a quadratic-cubic or cubic-quintic nonlinearity. We focus on depinning fronts involving stripes that are orientated either parallel, oblique and perpendicular to the front interface, and almost planar depinning fronts. We show that invading parallel depinning fronts select both a far-field wavenumber and a propagation wavespeed whereas retreatin…
We present results on stripe formation in the Swift-Hohenberg equation with a directional quenching term. Stripes are "grown" in the wake of a moving parameter step line, and we analyze how the orientation of stripes changes depending on the speed of the quenching line and on a lateral aspect ratio. We observe stripes perpendicular to the quenching line, but also stripes created at oblique angles, as well as periodic wrinkles created in an otherwise oblique stripe pattern. Technically, we study stripe formation as traveling-wave solutions in the Swift-Hohenberg equation and in reduced Cahn-Hil…
