In previous work, we defined the intersection graph of a chord diagram associated with a string link (as in the theory of finite type invariants). In this paper, we look at the case when this graph is a tree, and we show that in many cases these trees determine the chord diagram (modulo the usual 1-term and 4-term relations).
This paper presents a construction of fibered links $(K,Σ)$ out of chord diagrams $\sL$. Let $Γ$ be the incidence graph of $\sL$. Under certain conditions on $\sL$ the symmetrized Seifert matrix of $(K,Σ)$ equals the bilinear form of the simply-laced Coxeter system $(W,S)$ associated to $Γ$; and the monodromy of $(K,Σ)$ equals minus the Coxeter element of $(W,S)$. Lehmer's problem is solved for the monodromy of these Coxeter links.
By adding or removing appropriate structures to Gauss diagram, one can create useful objects related to virtual links. In this paper few objects of this kind are studied: twisted virtual links generalizing virtual links; signed chord diagrams staying halfway between twisted virtual links and Kauffman bracket / Khovanov homology; alternatable virtual links intermediate between virtual and classical links. The most profound role here belongs to a structure that we dare to call orientation of chord diagram. Khovanov homology is generalized to oriented signed chord diagrams and links in oriented t…
In view of the result of Kontsevich, now often called ``the fundamental theorem of Vassiliev theory'', identifying the graded dual of the associated graded vector space to the space of Vassiliev invariants filtered by degree with the linear span of chord diagrams modulo the ``4T-relation'' (and in the unframed case, the ``1T-'' or ``isolated chord relation''), it is a problem of some interest to provide a basis for the space of chord diagrams modulo the 4T-relation. We construct the basis for the vector space spanned by chord diagrams with n chords and m distinguishable link components, modulo…
In previous work, the author defined the intersection graph of a chord diagram associated with string links (as in the theory of finite type invariants). In this paper, we classify the trees which can be obtained as intersection graphs of string link diagrams.
We discuss an action of the Grothendieck-Teichmüller proalgebraic group on the linear span of proalgebraic tangles, oriented tangles completed by a filtration of Vassiliev. The action yields a motivic structure on tangles. We derive distinguished properties of the action particularly on proalgebraic string links and on proalgebraic knots which can not be observed in the action on proalgebraic braids. By exploiting the properties, we explicitly calculate the inverse image of the trivial (the chordless) chord diagram under the Kontsevich isomorphism.
The present paper is a review of the current state of Graph-Link Theory (graph-links are also closely related to homotopy classes of looped interlacement graphs), dealing with a generalisation of knots obtained by translating the Reidemeister moves for links into the language of intersection graphs of chord diagrams. In this paper we show how some methods of classical and virtual knot theory can be translated into the language of abstract graphs, and some theorems can be reproved and generalised to this graphical setting. We construct various invariants, prove certain minimality theorems and c…
In 2002, D. Hrencecin and L.H. Kauffman defined a filamentation invariant on oriented chord diagrams that may determine whether the corresponding flat virtual knot diagrams are non-trivial. A virtual knot diagram is non-classical if its related flat virtual knot diagram is non-trivial. Hence filamentations can be used to detect non-classical virtual knots. We extend these filamentation techniques to virtual links with more than one component. We also give examples of virtual links that they can detect as non-classical.
We introduce a matrix representation of a chord on a tangle which leads us to representing tangle chord diagrams as stacks of matrices that we call books. We show that band sum moves, Reidemeister moves as well as orientation changes are implemented on \widetilde{Z}_f - a framed link invariant constructed from the Kontsevich integral that's well-behaved under band sum moves - by matrix congruences. We prove that being given the bare framed Kontsevich integral Z_f(L) in book notation for some unknown link L, we can determine what the link L is, as well as the projection of Z_f(L) in the origina…
Virtual knot theory is a generalization of knot theory which is based on Gauss chord diagrams and link diagrams on closed oriented surfaces. A twisted knot is a generalization of a virtual knot, which corresponds to a link diagram on a possibly non-orientable surface. In this paper, we discuss an invariant of twisted links which is obtained from the JKSS invariant of virtual links by use of double coverings. We also discuss some properties of double covering diagrams.
We describe recent achievements in the theory of weight systems, which are functions on chord diagrams satisfying so-called $4$-term relations. Our main attention is devoted to constructions of weight systems. The two main sources of these constructions that are discussed in the paper are invariants of intersection graphs of chord diagrams that satisfy $4$-term relations for graphs and metrized Lie algebras. For the simplest nontrivial metrized Lie algebra $\mathfrak {sl}(2)$, we present recent results about the explicit form of generating functions for the values of the corresponding weight s…
To a rational homology sphere graph manifold one can associate a weighted tree invariant called splice diagram. In this article we prove a sufficient numerical condition on the splice diagram for a graph manifold to be a singularity link. We also show that if two manifolds have the same splice diagram, then their universal abelian covers are homeomorphic. To prove the last theorem we have to generalize our notions to orbifolds.
Given a reduced alternating diagram for a link, we obtain conditions that guarantee that the link complement has a complete hyperbolic structure, crossing arcs are the edges of an ideal geodesic triangulation, and every crossing arc is isotopic to a simple geodesic. The latter was conjectured by Sakuma and Weeks in 1995. We provide infinite families of closed braids for which our conditions hold.
Oriented ribbon graphs (dessins d'enfant) are graphs embedded in oriented surfaces. A quasi-tree of a ribbon graph is a spanning subgraph with one face, which is described by an ordered chord diagram. We show that for any link diagram $L$, there is an associated ribbon graph whose quasi-trees correspond bijectively to spanning trees of the graph obtained by checkerboard coloring $L$. This correspondence preserves the bigrading used for the spanning tree model of Khovanov homology, whose Euler characteristic is the Jones polynomial of $L$. Thus, Khovanov homology can be expressed in terms of ri…
A crown diagram of a smooth, closed oriented 4-manifold can be thought of as the projection of a link in the product of a closed surface and the circle, with chords in the circle direction connecting the strands of each crossing. This paper uses a straightforward assignment of integers to these chords to show that the smooth structures on the topological 4-manifold underlying a pair of Fintushel-Stern knot surgery 4-manifolds which are known to have the same Seiberg-Witten invariant are not isotopic. A natural question is to determine if the argument may be strengthened to show these manifolds…
It is well known that the braid index of a link equals the minimum number of Seifert circles among all link diagrams representing it. For a link with a reduced alternating diagram $D$, $s(D)$, the number of Seifert circles in $D$, equals the braid index $\textbf{b}(D)$ of $D$ if $D$ contains no {\em lone crossings} (a crossing in $D$ is called a {\em lone crossing} if it is the only crossing between two Seifert circles in $D$). If $D$ contains lone crossings, then $\textbf{b}(D)$ is strictly less than $s(D)$. However in general it is not known how $s(D)$ is related to $\textbf{b}(D)$. In this …
We show that three natural decision problems about links and 3-manifolds are computationally hard, assuming some conjectures in complexity theory. The first problem is determining whether a link in the 3-sphere bounds a Seifert surface with Thurston norm at most a given integer; this is shown to be NP-complete. The second problem is the homeomorphism problem for closed 3-manifolds; this is shown to be at least as hard as the graph isomorphism problem. The third problem is determining whether a given link in the 3-sphere is a sublink of another given link; this is shown to be NP-hard.
We survey some tools and techniques for determining geometric properties of a link complement from a link diagram. In particular, we survey the tools used to estimate geometric invariants in terms of basic diagrammatic link invariants. We focus on determining when a link is hyperbolic, estimating its volume, and bounding its cusp shape and cusp area. We give sample applications and state some open questions and conjectures.
It was proven by González-Meneses, Manchón and Silvero that the extreme Khovanov homology of a link diagram is isomorphic to the reduced (co)homology of the independence simplicial complex obtained from a bipartite circle graph constructed from the diagram. In this paper we conjecture that this simplicial complex is always homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. In particular, its homotopy type, if not contractible, would be a link invariant and it would imply that the extreme Khovanov homology of any link diagram does not contain torsion. We prove the conjecture in many special cases and f…
An alternative method is described for determining the hyperbolic structure on a link complement, and some of its elementary consequences are examined. The method is particularly suited to alternating links.
We consider the problem of deciding whether a polygonal knot in 3-dimensional Euclidean space is unknotted, capable of being continuously deformed without self-intersection so that it lies in a plane. We show that this problem, {\sc unknotting problem} is in {\bf NP}. We also consider the problem, {\sc unknotting problem} of determining whether two or more such polygons can be split, or continuously deformed without self-intersection so that they occupy both sides of a plane without intersecting it. We show that it also is in NP. Finally, we show that the problem of determining the genus of a …
The conormal lift of a link $K$ in $\R^3$ is a Legendrian submanifold $Λ_K$ in the unit cotangent bundle $U^* \R^3$ of $\R^3$ with contact structure equal to the kernel of the Liouville form. Knot contact homology, a topological link invariant of $K$, is defined as the Legendrian homology of $Λ_K$, the homology of a differential graded algebra generated by Reeb chords whose differential counts holomorphic disks in the symplectization $\R \times U^*\R^3$ with Lagrangian boundary condition $\R \times Λ_K$. We perform an explicit and complete computation of the Legendrian homology of $Λ_K$ for ar…
