A proof of Waldhausen's uniqueness of splittings of S^3 (after Rubinstein and Scharlemann)

In [Topology 35 (1996) 1005--1023] J H Rubinstein and M Scharlemann, using Cerf Theory, developed tools for comparing Heegaard splittings of irreducible, non-Haken manifolds. As a corollary of their work they obtained a new proof of Waldhausen's uniqueness of Heegaard splittings of S^3. In this note we use Cerf Theory and develop the tools needed for comparing Heegaard splittings of S^3. This allows us to use Rubinstein and Scharlemann's philosophy and obtain a simpler proof of Waldhausen's Theorem. Heegaard surfaces and measured laminations, II: non-Haken 3-manifolds

A famous example of Casson and Gordon shows that a Haken 3-manifold can have an infinite family of irreducible Heegaard splittings with different genera. In this paper, we prove that a closed non-Haken 3-manifold has only finitely many irreducible Heegaard splittings, up to isotopy. This is much stronger than the Waldhausen conjecture. Another immediate corollary is that for any irreducible non-Haken 3-manifold M, there is a number N, such that any two Heegaard splittings of M are equivalent after at most N stabilizations.

Waldhausen's Theorem

This note is an exposition of Waldhausen's proof of Waldhausen's Theorem: the three-sphere has a single Heegaard splitting, up to isotopy, in every genus. As a necessary step we also give a sketch of the Reidemeister-Singer Theorem.

One-sided Heegaard splittings of RP^3

Using basic properties of one-sided Heegaard splittings, a direct proof that geometrically compressible one-sided splittings of RP^3 are stabilised is given. The argument is modelled on that used by Waldhausen to show that two-sided splittings of S^3 are standard.

A classification of automorphisms of compact 3-manifolds

We classify isotopy classes of automorphisms (self-homeomorphisms) of 3-manifolds satisfying the Thurston Geometrization Conjecture. The classification is similar to the classification of automorphisms of surfaces developed by Nielsen and Thurston, except an automorphism of a reducible manifold must first be written as a suitable composition of two automorphisms, each of which fits into our classification.
