We answer a question of Shelah by showing that it is consistent that every set of ordinals of cofinality omega_1 in I[omega_2] is nonstationary if and only if it is consistent that that there is a kappa^+ Mahlo cardinal kappa.
We show that the reduced cofinality of the nonstationary ideal NS_kappa on a regular uncountable cardinal kappa may be less than its cofinality, where the reduced cofinality of NS_kappa is the least cardinality of any family F of nonstationary subsets of kappa such that every nonstationary subset of kappa can be covered by less than $κ$ many members of F.
Let 0<n^*< omega and f:X-> n^*+1 be a function where X subseteq omega backslash (n^*+1) is infinite. Consider the following set S_f= {x subset aleph_omega : |x| <= aleph_{n^*} & (for all n in X)cf(x cap alpha_n)= aleph_{f(n)}}. The question, first posed by Baumgartner, is whether S_f is stationary in [alpha_omega]^{< aleph_{n^*+1}}. By a standard result, the above question can also be rephrased as certain transfer property. Namely, S_f is stationary iff for any structure A=< aleph_omega, ... > there's a B prec A such that |B|= aleph_{n^*} and for all n in X we have cf(B cap aleph_n)= aleph_{f(…
It is consistent that for every n >= 2, every stationary subset of omega_n consisting of ordinals of cofinality omega_k where k = 0 or k <= n-3 reflects fully in the set of ordinals of cofinality omega_{n-1}. We also show that this result is best possible.
A classical theorem of Hechler asserts that the structure $\left(ω^ω,\le^*\right)$ is universal in the sense that for any $σ$-directed poset P with no maximal element, there is a ccc forcing extension in which $\left(ω^ω,\le^*\right)$ contains a cofinal order-isomorphic copy of P. In this paper, we prove a consistency result concerning the universality of the higher analogue $\left(κ^κ,\le^S\right)$: Theorem. Assume GCH. For every regular uncountable cardinal $κ$, there is a cofinality-preserving GCH-preserving forcing extension in which for every analytic quasi-order Q over $κ^κ$ and every st…
We show the consistency of "there is a nice sigma --ideal I on the reals with add(I)= omega_1 which cannot be represented as the union of a strictly increasing sequence of length omega_1 of sigma-subideals". This answers a question by Borodulin-Nadzieja and Glab.
All ultrafilters under consideration here are non-principal ultrafilters on the set omega of natural numbers. We are concerned with the possible cofinalities of ultrapowers of omega with respect to such ultrafilters. We show that no cardinal below the groupwise density number g can occur as such a cofinality and that at most one cardinal below the splitting number s can so occur. The proof for s, when combined with a result of Nyikos, gives the additional information that all P_{kappa}-point ultrafilters, for kappa greater than the bounding number b, are nearly coherent.
Let m be the least cardinal k such that MA(k) fails. The only known model for "m is singular" was constructed by Kunen. In Kunen's model cof(m)=omega_1. It is unknown whether "omega_1 < cof(m) < m" is consistent. The purpose of this paper is to present a proof of Kunen's result and to identify the difficulties of generalizing this result to an arbitrary uncountable cofinality.
We show using a proof of the Global Square property in Core Models below a measurable of Mitchell order o(kappa)=kappa^++ (a result originally due to Jensen & Zeman) that Foreman and Magidor's Mutual Stationarity property MS(Aleph_n (1<n<omega), Cof(omega_1)) implies the existence of inner models with measurables of high Mitchell order. This MS property states that any sequence of independently chosen stationary subsets S_n of the Aleph_n (of fixed cofinality omega_1) is mutually stationary below aleph_omega.
We strengthen the revised GCH theorem by showing, e.g., that for lambda=cf(lambda)>beth_omega, for all but finitely many regular kappa<beth_omega, lambda is accessible on cofinality kappa in a weak version of it holds. In particular, lambda=2^mu=mu^+>beth_omega implies the diamond on lambda is restricted to cofinality kappa for all but finitely many kappa in Reg cap beth_omega and we strengthen the results on the middle diamond. Moreover, we get stronger results on the middle diamond.
We show that several sigma-ideals related to porous sets have additivity omega_1 and cofinality 2^omega. This answers a question addressed by Miroslav Repick'y.
We present two different types of models where, for certain singular cardinals lambda of uncountable cofinality, lambda -> (lambda, omega+1)^2, although lambda is not a strong limit cardinal. We announce, here, and will present in a subsequent paper, that, for example, consistently, aleph_{omega_1} not-> (aleph_{omega_1}, omega+1)^2 and consistently, 2^{aleph_0} not-> (2^{aleph_0},omega +1)^2 .
A group G that is not finitely generated can be written as the union of a chain of proper subgroups. The cofinality spectrum of G, written CF(S), is the set of regular cardinals lambda such that G can be expressed as the union of a chain of lambda proper subgroups. The cofinality of G, written c(G), is the least element of CF(G). We show that it is consistent that CF(S) is quite a bizarre set of cardinals. For example, we prove Theorem (A): Let T be any subset of omega setminus {0}. Then it is consistent that aleph_n in CF(S) if and only if n in T . One might suspect that it is consistent that…
Every partition of [[omega_1]^{< omega}]^2 into finitely many pieces has a cofinal homogeneous set. Furthermore, it is consistent that every directed partially ordered set satisfies the partition property if and only if it has finite character.
Let lambda be aleph_0 or a strong limit of cofinality aleph_0. Suppose that (G_m,p_{m,n}:m =< n<omega) and (H_m,p^t_{m,n}: m=< n < omega) are projective systems of groups of cardinality less than lambda and suppose that for every n<omega there is a homomorphism h:H_n-->G_n such that all the diagrams commute. If for every mu<lambda there exists (f_i in G_omega:i<mu) such that for distinct i,j we have: f_i f_j^{-1} notin h_omega(H_omega), then there exists (f_i in G_omega:i<2^lambda) such that for distinct i,j we have f_i f_j^{-1} notin h_omega(H_omega).
Burke \cite{MR1472122} proved that the generalized nonstationary ideal, denoted NS, is universal in the following sense: every normal ideal, and every tower of normal ideals of inaccessible height, is a canonical Rudin-Keisler projection of the restriction of $\text{NS}$ to some stationary set. We investigate how far Burke's theorem can be pushed, by analyzing the universality properties of NS with respect to the wider class of \emph{$\mathcal{C}$-systems of filters} introduced by Audrito-Steila \cite{AudritoSteila}. First we answer a question of \cite{AudritoSteila}, by proving that $\mathcal…
Suppose that kappa is a singular cardinal of cofinality omega and GCH holds. Assume that for every n<omega the set of alphas with o(alpha)>= alpha^{+n} is unbounded in kappa. Then there is a cardinal preserving extension satisfying 2^kappa=kappa^++ and GCH below kappa. By a result of W. Mitchell and the author the assumptions are optimal.
We prove that for every singular cardinal mu of cofinality omega, the complete Boolean algebra compP_mu(mu) contains as a complete subalgebra an isomorphic copy of the collapse algebra Comp Col(omega_1,mu^{aleph_0}). Consequently, adding a generic filter to the quotient algebra P_mu(mu)=P(mu)/[mu]^{<mu} collapses mu^{aleph_0} to aleph_1. Another corollary is that the Baire number of the space U(mu) of all uniform ultrafilters over mu is equal to omega_2. The corollaries affirm two conjectures by Balcar and Simon. The proof uses pcf theory.
We give another proof that for every lambda >= beth_omega for every large enough regular kappa < beth_omega we have lambda^{[kappa]}= lambda, dealing with sufficient conditions for replacing beth_omega by aleph_omega. In section 2 we show that large pcf(a) implies existence of free sets. An example is that if pp(aleph_omega)> aleph_{omega_1} then for every algebra M of cardinality aleph_omega with countably many functions, for some a_n in M (for n< omega) we have a_n notin cl_M({a_l: l not= n, l<omega}). Then we present results complementary to those of section 2 (but not close enough): if IND…
A cardinal lambda is called omega-inaccessible if for all mu < lambda we have mu^omega<lambda. We show that for every omega-inaccessible cardinal lambda there is a CCC (hence cardinality and cofinality preserving) forcing that adds a hereditarily Lindelof regular space of density lambda. This extends an analogous earlier result of ours that only worked for regular lambda.
We give some existence/nonexistence statements on universal graphs, which under GCH give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a universal graph of size lambda with no K(kappa), namely, if either kappa is finite or cf(kappa)>cf(lambda). (Here K(kappa) denotes the complete graph on kappa vertices.) The special case when lambda^{< kappa}= lambda was first proved by F. Galvin. Next, we investigate the question that if there is no universal K(kappa)-free graph of size lambda then how many of these graphs embed all the other. It was known, that if lambda^{< lambda}= lambda (e.g.…
We prove the following two results. Theorem A: Let alpha be a limit ordinal. Suppose that 2^{|alpha|}<aleph_alpha and 2^{|alpha|^+}<aleph_{|alpha|^+}, whereas aleph_alpha^{|alpha|}>aleph_{|alpha|^+}. Then for all n< omega and for all bounded X subset aleph_{|alpha|^+}, M_n^#(X) exists. Theorem B: Let kappa be a singular cardinal of uncountable cofinality. If {alpha<kappa| 2^alpha=alpha^+} is stationary as well as co-stationary then for all n< omega and for all bounded X subset kappa, M_n^#(X) exists. Theorem A answers a question of Gitik and Mitchell, and Theorem B yields a lower bound for an …
