A tortile (or ribbon) category defines invariants of ribbon (framed) links and tangles. We observe that these invariants, when restricted to links, string links, and more general tangles which we call turbans, do not actually depend on the braiding of the tortile category. Besides duality, the only pertinent data for such tangles are the double braiding and twist. We introduce the general notions of twine, which is meant to play the role of the double braiding (in the absence of a braiding), and the corresponding notion of twist. We show that the category of (ribbon) pure braids is the free category with a twine (a twist). We show that a category with duals and a self-dual twist defines invariants of stringlinks. We introduce the notion of turban category, so that the category of turban tangles is the free turban category. Lastly we give a few examples and a tannaka dictionary for twines and twists.
In our preceding papers we started considering the categories of tangles with flat G-connections in their complements, where G is a simple complex algebraic group. The braiding (or the commutativity constraint) in such categories satisfies the holonomy Yang-Baxter equation and it is this property which is essential for our construction of invariants of tangles with flat G-connections in their complements. In this paper, to any pair of irreducible modules over the quantized universal enveloping algebra of gl_2 at a root of unity, we associate a solution of the holonomy Yang-Baxter equation.
R. Kashaev and N. Reshetikhin introduced the notion of holonomy braiding extending V. Turaev's homotopy braiding to describe the behavior of cyclic representations of the unrestricted quantum group $U_qsl_2$ at root of unity. In this paper, using quandles and biquandles we develop a general theory for Reshetikhin-Turaev ribbon type functor for tangles with quandle representations. This theory applies to the unrestricted quantum group $U_qsl_2$ and produces an invariant of links with a gauge class of quandle representations.
A laycle is the categorical analogue of a lazy cocycle. Twines (as introduced by Bruguieres) and strong twines (as introduced by the authors) are laycles satisfying some extra conditions. If $c$ is a braiding, the double braiding $c^2$ is always a twine; we prove that it is a strong twine if and only if $c$ satisfies a sort of modified braid relation (we call such $c$ pseudosymmetric, as any symmetric braiding satisfies this relation). It is known that symmetric Yetter-Drinfeld categories are trivial; we prove that the Yetter-Drinfeld category $_H{\cal YD}^H$ over a Hopf algebra $H$ is pseudos…
In this paper, we use skein-theoretic techniques to classify all virtual knot polynomials and trivalent graph invariants with certain smallness conditions. The first half of the paper classifies all virtual knot polynomials giving non-trivial invariants strictly smaller than the one given by the Higman-Sims spin model. In particular, we exhibit a family of skein theories coming from $\text{Rep}(O(2))$ with an interesting braiding. In addition, all skein theories of oriented virtual tangles with some smallness conditions are classified. In the second half of the paper, we classify all non-trivi…
In this paper we study oriented quantum coalgebras which are structures closely related to oriented quantum algebras. We study the relationship between oriented quantum coalgebras and oriented quantum algebras and the relationship between oriented quantum coalgebras and quantum coalgebras. We show that there are regular isotopy invariants of oriented 1-1 tangles and of oriented knots and links associated to oriented and twist oriented quantum coalgebras respectively. There are many parallels between the theory of oriented quantum coalgebras and the theory of quantum coalgebras
Is is shown that the quantum Weyl group of $sl_2$ contains an element that is a cylinder twist, i.e. it gives rise to representations of the braid group of Coxeter type B.
We consider an algebra of (classical or virtual) tangles over an ordered circuit operad and introduce Conway-type invariants of tangles which respect this algebraic structure. The resulting invariants contain both the coefficients of the Conway polynomial and the Milnor's mu-invariants of string links as partial cases. The extension of the Conway polynomial to virtual tangles satisfies the usual Conway skein relation and its coefficients are GPV finite type invariants. As a by-product, we also obtain a simple representation of the braid group which gives the Conway polynomial as a certain twis…
In this note we prove two main results. 1. In a rigid braided finite tensor category over C (not necessarily semisimple), some power of the Casimir element and some even power of the braiding is unipotent. 2. In a (semisimple) modular category, the twists are roots of unity dividing the algebraic integer D^{5/2}, where D is the global dimension of the category (the sum of squares of dimensions of simple objects). Both results generalize Vafa's theorem, saying that in a modular category twists are roots of unity, and square of the braiding has finite order. We also discuss the notion of the qua…
Given a pointed 4-ended tangle $T \subset D^3$, there are two Khovanov theoretic tangle invariants, $\unicode{1044}_1(T)$ from [arXiv:1910.1458] and $L_T$ from [arXiv:1808.06957], which are twisted complexes over the Fukaya category of the boundary 4-punctured sphere $(S^2,4\text{pt})=\partial (D^3, T)$. We prove that these two invariants are the same.
We compute the quantum double, braiding and other canonical Hopf algebra constructions for the bicrossproduct Hopf algebra $H$ associated to the factorization of a finite group into two subgroups. The representations of the quantum double are described by a notion of bicrossed bimodules, generalising the cross modules of Whitehead. We also show that self-duality structures for the bicrossproduct Hopf algebras are in one-one correspondence with factor-reversing group isomorphisms. The example $Z_6Z_6$ is given in detail. We show further that the quantum double $D(H)$ is the twisting of $D(X)$ b…
We construct a categorification of the quantum sl_3 projectors, the sl_3 analog of the Jones-Wenzl projectors, as the stable limit of the complexes assigned to k-twist torus braids (as k goes to infinity) in a suitably shifted version of Morrison and Nieh's geometric formulation of sl_3 link homology (math.GT/0612754). We use these projectors to give a categorification of the sl_3 Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of framed tangles.
It is well known that central extensions of a group G correspond to 2-cocycles on G. Cocycles can be used to construct extensions of G-graded algebras via a version of the Drinfeld twist introduced by Majid. We show how 2-cocycles can be defined for an abstract monoidal category C, following Panaite, Staic and Van Oystaeyen. A braiding on C leads to analogues of Nichols algebras in C, and we explain how the recent work on twists of Nichols algebras by Andruskiewitsch, Fantino, Garcia and Vendramin fits in this context. Furthermore, we propose an approach to twisting the multiplication in braid…
We give a geometric interpretation of Bar-Natan's universal invariant for the class of tangles in the 3-ball with four ends: we associate with such 4-ended tangles $T$ multicurves $\widetilde{\operatorname{BN}}(T)$, that is, collections of immersed curves with local systems in the 4-punctured sphere. These multicurves are tangle invariants up to homotopy of the underlying curves and equivalence of the local systems. They satisfy a gluing theorem which recovers the reduced Bar-Natan homology of links in terms of wrapped Lagrangian Floer theory. Furthermore, we use $\widetilde{\operatorname{BN}}…
The ribbon cocycle invariant is defined by means of a partition function using ternary cohomology of self-distributive structures (TSD) and colorings of ribbon diagrams of a framed link, following the same paradigm introduced by Carter, Jelsovsky, Kamada, Langfor and Saito in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 2003;355(10):3947-89, for the quandle cocycle invariant. In this article we show that the ribbon cocycle invariant is a quantum invariant. We do so by constructing a ribbon category from a TSD set whose twisting and braiding morphisms entail a given TSD $2$-cocycle. Then w…
A category N of labeled (oriented) trivalent graphs (nets) or ribbon graphs is extended by new generators called fusing, braiding, twist and switch with relations which can be called Moore--Seiberg relations. A functor to N is constructed from the category Surf of oriented surfaces with labeled boundary and their homeomorphisms. Given an (eventually non-semisimple) k-linear abelian ribbon braided category C with some finiteness conditions we construct a functor from a central extension of N with the set of labels ObC to k-vector spaces. Composing the functors we get a modular functor from a ce…
Quantum invariants like the colored Jones polynomial are algebraic in nature but are conjectured to detect important information about the geometry of links. In this thesis we explore these connections using an enhanced version of the RT construction. Our invariants take the holonomy of a flat connection on the link complement as input, so we call them holonomy invariants. The case of trivial holonomy recovers the ordinary RT construction. We consider holonomy representations into $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb C)$, which are closely related to hyperbolic geometry. In order to define our invaria…
We construct the skein category $\mathcal{S}$ of the annulus and show that it is equivalent to the affine Temperley-Lieb category of Graham and Lehrer. It leads to a skein theoretic description of the extended affine Temperley-Lieb algebras. We construct an endofunctor of $\mathcal{S}$ that corresponds, on the level of tangle diagrams, to the insertion of an arc connecting the inner and outer boundary of the annulus. We use it to define and construct towers of extended affine Temperley-Lieb algebra modules. It allows us to construct a tower of modules acting on spaces of link patterns on the p…
