A dynamical version of the Bourgain-Fremlin-Talagrand dichotomy shows that the enveloping semigroup of a dynamical system is either very large and contains a topological copy of the Stone-Cech compactification of the natural numbers, or it is a "tame" topological space whose topology is determined by the convergence of sequences. In the latter case we say that the dynamical system is tame. We show that (i) a metric distal minimal system is tame iff it is equicontinuous (ii) for an abelian acting group a tame metric minimal system is PI (hence a weakly mixing minimal system is never tame), and (iii) a tame minimal cascade has zero topological entropy. We also show that for minimal distal-but-not-equicontinuous systems the canonical map from the enveloping operator semigroup onto the Ellis semigroup is never an isomorphism. This answers a long standing open question. We give a complete characterization of minimal systems whose enveloping semigroup is metrizable. In particular it follows that for abelian acting group such a system is equicontinuous.
We present a purely enveloping semigroup proof of a theorem of Shao and Ye which asserts that for an abelian group $T$, a minimal flow $(X,T)$ and any integer $d \ge 1$, the regional proximal relation of order $d$ is an equivalence relation.
In this paper, it is shown that for $d\in\mathbb{N}$, a minimal system $(X,T)$ is a $d$-step pro-nilsystem if its enveloping semigroup is a $d$-step top-nilpotent group, answering an open question by Donoso. Thus, combining the previous result of Donoso, it turns out that a minimal system $(X,T)$ is a $d$-step pro-nilsystem if and only if its enveloping semigroup is a $d$-step top-nilpotent group.
The question we deal with here, which was presented to us by Joe Auslander and Anima Nagar, is whether there is a nontrivial cascade (X,T) whose enveloping semigroup, as a dynamical system, is topologically weakly mixing (WM). After an introductory section recalling some definitions and classic results, we establish some necessary conditions for this to happen, and in the final section we show, using Ratner's theory, that the enveloping semigroup of the `time one map' of a classical horocycle flow is weakly mixing.
We consider certain point patterns of an Euclidean space and calculate the Ellis enveloping semigroup of their associated dynamical systems. The algebraic structure and the topology of the Ellis semigroup, as well as its action on the underlying space, are explicitly described. As an example, we treat the vertex pattern of the Amman-Beenker tiling of the plane.
In this paper we study the Ellis semigroup of a d-step nilsystem and the inverse limit of such systems. By using the machinery of cubes developed by Host, Kra and Maass, we prove that such a system has a d-step topologically nilpotent enveloping semigroup. In the case d=2, we prove that these notions are equivalent, extending a previous result by Glasner.
We establish new characterizations for (pseudo)isometric extensions of topological dynamical systems. For such extensions, we also extend results about relatively invariant measures and Fourier analysis that were previously only known in the minimal case to a significantly larger class, including all transitive systems. To bypass the reliance on minimality of the classical approaches to isometric extensions via the Ellis semigroup, we show that extensions of topological dynamical systems can be described as groupoid actions and then adapt the concept of enveloping semigroups to construct a uni…
The structures of the enveloping semigroups of certain elementary finite- and infinite-dimensional distal dynamical systems are given, answering open problems posed by Namioka in 1982. The universal minimal system with (topological) quasi-discrete spectrum is obtained from the infinite-dimensional case. It is proved that, on one hand, a minimal system is a factor of this universal system if and only if its enveloping semigroup has quasi-discrete spectrum and that, on the other hand, such a factor need not have quasi-discrete spectrum in itself. This leads to a natural generalisation of the pro…
A compact metric space $X$ and a discrete topological acting group $T$ give a flow $(X,T)$. Robert Ellis had initiated the study of dynamical properties of the flow $(X,T)$ via the algebraic properties of its "Enveloping Semigroup" $E(X)$. This concept of \emph{Enveloping Semigroups} that he defined, has turned out to be a very fundamental tool in the abstract theory of `topological dynamics'. The flow $(X,T)$ induces the flow $(2^X,T)$. Such a study was first initiated by Eli Glasner who studied the properties of this induced flow by defining and using the notion of a `circle operator' as an …
For a continuous semicascade on a metrizable compact set $Ω$, we consider the weak$^{*}$ convergence of generalized operator ergodic means in ${\rm End}\, \, C^{*} (Ω)$. We discuss conditions on the dynamical system under which (a) every ergodic net contains a convergent subsequence; (b) all ergodic nets converge; (c) all ergodic sequences converge. We study the relationships between the convergence of ergodic means and the properties of transitivity of the proximality relation on $Ω$, minimality of supports of ergodic measures, and uniqueness of minimal sets in the closure of trajectories of …
We study the problem on the weak-star decomposability of a topological $\mathbb{N}_{0}$-dynamical system $(Ω,φ)$, where $φ$ is an endomorphism of a metric compact set $Ω$, into ergodic components in terms of the associated enveloping semigroups. In the tame case (where the Ellis semigroup $E(Ω,φ)$ consists of $B_{1}$-transformations $Ω\rightarrow Ω$), we show that (i) the desired decomposition exists for an appropriate choice of the generalized sequential averaging method; (ii) every sequence of weighted ergodic means for the shift operator $x\rightarrow x\circφ$, $x\in C(Ω)$, contains a point…
We discuss the application of various concepts from the theory of topological dynamical systems to Delone sets and tilings. We consider in particular, the maximal equicontinuous factor of a Delone dynamical system, the proximality relation and the enveloping semigroup of such systems.
Todorcević' trichotomy in the class of separable Rosenthal compacta induces a hierarchy in the class of tame (compact, metrizable) dynamical systems $(X,T)$ according to the topological properties of their enveloping semigroups $E(X)$. More precisely, we define the classes $\mathrm{Tame}_\mathbf{2} \subset \mathrm{Tame}_\mathbf{1} \subset \mathrm{Tame},$ where $\mathrm{Tame}_\mathbf{1}$ is the proper subclass of tame systems with first countable $E(X)$, and $\mathrm{Tame}_\mathbf{2}$ is its proper subclass consisting of systems with hereditarily separable $E(X)$. We study some general properti…
To every Banach space V we associate a compact right topological affine semigroup E(V). We show that a separable Banach space V is Asplund if and only if E(V) is metrizable, and it is Rosenthal (i.e. it does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$) if and only if E(V) is a Rosenthal compactum. We study representations of compact right topological semigroups in E(V). In particular, representations of tame and HNS-semigroups arise naturally as enveloping semigroups of tame and HNS (hereditarily non-sensitive) dynamical systems, respectively. As an application we obtain a generalization of a theo…
Our aim is to find some new links between linear (circular) orderability of groups and topological dynamics. We suggest natural analogs of the concept of algebraic orderability for topological groups involving order-preserving actions on compact spaces and the corresponding enveloping semigroups in the sense of R. Ellis. This approach leads to several natural questions. Some of them might be useful also for discrete (countable) orderable groups.
Generalizing a result of Furstenberg, we show that for every infinite discrete group $G$, the Bernoulli flow $2^G$ is disjoint from every minimal $G$-flow. From this, we deduce that the algebra generated by the minimal functions $\mathfrak{A}(G)$ is a proper subalgebra of $\ell^\infty(G)$ and that the enveloping semigroup of the universal minimal flow $M(G)$ is a proper quotient of the universal enveloping semigroup $βG$. When $G$ is countable, we also prove that for any metrizable, minimal $G$-flow, there exists a free, minimal flow disjoint from it and that there exist continuum many mutuall…
