Following an idea of A. Berenstein, we define a commutor for the category of crystals of a finite dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra. We show that this endows the category of crystals with the structure of a coboundary category. Similar to the case of braided categories, there is a group naturally acting on multiple tensor products in coboundary categories. We call this group the cactus group and identify it as the fundamental group of the moduli space of marked real genus zero stable curves.

Braided and coboundary monoidal categories

In this expository paper, we discuss and compare the notions of braided and coboundary monoidal categories. Coboundary monoidal categories are analogues of braided monoidal categories in which the role of the braid group is replaced by the cactus group. A Coboundary Temperely-Lieb Category for $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-Crystals

By considering a suitable renormalization of the Temperley--Lieb category, we study its specialization to the case $q=0$. Unlike the $q\neq 0$ case, the obtained monoidal category, $\mathcal{TL}_0(\Bbbk)$, is not rigid or braided. We provide a closed formula for the Jones--Wenzl projectors in $\mathcal{TL}_0(\Bbbk)$ and give semisimple bases for its endomorphism algebras. Crystals, quiver varieties and coboundary categories for Kac-Moody algebras

The crystal commutor and Drinfeld's unitarized R-matrix

Drinfeld defined a unitarized R-matrix for any quantum group U_q(g). This gives a commutor for the category of U_q(g) representations, making it into a coboundary category. Henriques and Kamnitzer defined another commutor which also gives U_q(g) representations the structure of a coboundary category. We show that a particular case of Henriques and Kamnitzer's construction agrees with Drinfeld's commutor. We then describe the action of Drinfeld's commutor on a tensor product of two crystal bases, and explain the relation to the crystal commutor.

The octahedron recurrence and gl(n) crystals

We study the hive model of gl(n) tensor products, following Knutson, Tao, and Woodward. We define a coboundary category where the tensor product is given by hives and where the associator and commutor are defined using a modified octahedron recurrence. We then prove that this category is equivalent to the category of crystals for the Lie algebra gl(n). The proof of this equivalence uses a new connection between the octahedron recurrence and the Jeu de Taquin and Schutzenberger involution procedures on Young tableaux.

A Higher Frobenius-Schur Indicator Formula for Group-Theoretical Fusion Categories

Cactus group and monodromy of Bethe vectors

Cactus group is the fundamental group of the real locus of the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of stable rational curves. This group appears naturally as an analog of the braid group in coboundary monoidal categories. Fix a semisimple Lie algebra g. Gaudin algebras are commutative algebras acting on tensor product multiplicity spaces for g-representations. These algebras depend on a parameter which is a point in the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of marked stable genus 0 curves. Quasi-coassociative C-quantum groupoids of type A and modular C-categories

We construct a new class of finite-dimensional C^*-quantum groupoids at roots of unity q=e^{iπ/\ell}, with limit the discrete dual of the classical SU(N) for large orders. The representation category of our groupoid turns out to be tensor equivalent to the well known quotient C^*-category of the category of tilting modules of the non-semisimple quantum group U_q({\mathfrak sl}_N) of Drinfeld, Jimbo and Lusztig.
