Banach Algebras of Integral Operators, Off-Diagonal Decay, and Applications in Wireless Communications

In this dissertation I establish that a broad class of Banach *-algebras of infinite integral operators, defined by the property that the kernels of the elements of the algebras possess subexponential off-diagonal decay, is inverse closed in the Banach space of bounded linear operators on the Hilbert space of square-integrable functions. I also show that the algebras under consideration are symmetric. In the second part of this dissertation, I present the results of the IEEE Transactions on Communications paper written jointly by Thomas Strohmer and me. We develop a comprehensive framework for the design of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, using techniques from Gabor frame theory, sphere-packing theory, representation theory, and the Heisenberg group.

A Connes-amenable, dual Banach algebra need not have a normal, virtual diagonal

Let $G$ be a locally compact group, and let $WAP(G)$ denote the space of weakly almost periodic functions on $G$. We show that, if $G$ is a $[SIN]$-group, but not compact, then the dual Banach algebra $WAP(G)^\ast$ does not have a normal, virtual diagonal. Consequently, whenever $G$ is an amenable, non-compact $[SIN]$-group, $WAP(G)^\ast$ is an example of a Connes-amenable, dual Banach algebra without a normal,virtual diagonal.

Banach algebras of pseudodifferential operators and their almost diagonalization

We define new symbol classes for pseudodifferntial operators and investigate their pseudodifferential calculus. The symbol classes are parametrized by commutative convolution algebras. To every solid convolution algebra over a lattice we associate a symbol class. Norm-Controlled Inversion in Smooth Banach Algebras, II

We show that smoothness implies norm-controlled inversion: the smoothness of an element $a$ in a Banach algebra with a one-parameter automorphism group is preserved under inversion, and the norm of the inverse $a^{-1}$ is controlled by the smoothness of $a$ and by spectral data. In our context smooth subalgebras are obtained with the classical constructions of approximation theory and resemble spaces of differentiable functions, Besov spaces or Bessel potential spaces. Bounded Hochschild cohomology of Banach algebras with a matrix-like structure

Let B be a unital Banach algebra. A projection in B which is equivalent to the identitity may give rise to a matrix-like structure on any two-sided ideal A in B. In this set-up we prove a theorem to the effect that the bounded Hochschild cohomology H^n(A,A^*) vanishes for all n>=1. Diagonals in Tensor Products of Operator Algebras

In this paper we give a short, direct proof, using only properties of the Haagerup tensor product, that if an operator algebra A possesses a diagonal in the Haagerup tensor product of A with itself, then A must be isomorphic to a finite dimensional $C^*$-algebra. Separable Spaces of Continuous Functions as Calkin Algebras

It is proved that for every compact metric space $K$ there exists a Banach space $X$ whose Calkin algebra $\mathcal{L}(X)/\mathcal{K}(X)$ is homomorphically isometric to $C(K)$. Operator biflatness of the Fourier algebra and approximate indicators for subgroups

We investigate if, for a locally compact group $G$, the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ is biflat in the sense of quantized Banach homology. A central role in our investigation is played by the notion of an approximate indicator of a closed subgroup of $G$: The Fourier algebra is operator biflat whenever the diagonal in $G \times G$ has an approximate indicator.
