For complex parameters a,c, we consider the Henon mapping H_{a,c}: C^2 -> C^2 given by (x,y) -> (x^2 +c -ay, x), and its Julia set, J. In this paper, we describe a rigorous computer program for attempting to construct a cone field in the tangent bundle over J, which is preserved by DH, and a continuous norm in which DH (and DH^{-1}) uniformly expands the cones (and their complements). We show a consequence of a successful construction is a proof that H is hyperbolic on J. We give several new examples of hyperbolic maps, produced with our computer program, Hypatia, which implements our methods.
We prove John Hubbard's conjecture on the topological complexity of the hyperbolic horseshoe locus of the complex Hénon map. Indeed, we show that there exist several non-trivial loops in the locus which generate infinitely many mutually different monodromies. Our main tool is a rigorous computational algorithm for verifying the uniform hyperbolicity of chain recurrent sets. In addition, we show that the dynamics of the real Hénon map is completely determined by the monodromy of a certain loop, providing the parameter of the map is contained in the hyperbolic horseshoe locus of the complex Héno…
We consider C^{2} Henon-like families of diffeomorphisms of R^{2} and study the boundary of the region of parameter values for which the nonwandering set is uniformly hyperbolic. Assuming sufficient dissipativity, we show that the loss of hyperbolicity is caused by a first homoclinic or heteroclinic tangency and that uniform hyperbolicity estimates hold uniformly in the parameter up to this bifurcation parameter and even, to some extent, at the bifurcation parameter.
We consider the structure of substantially dissipative complex Hénon maps admitting a dominated splitting on the Julia set. The dominated splitting assumption corresponds to the one-dimensional assumption that there are no critical points on the Julia set. Indeed, we prove the corresponding description of the Fatou set, namely that it consists of only finitely many components, each either attracting or parabolic periodic. In particular there are no rotation domains, and no wandering components. Moreover, we show that $J = J^\star$ and the dynamics on $J$ is hyperbolic away from parabolic cycle…
The purpose of this article is to investigate geometric properties of the parameter locus of the Hénon family where the uniform hyperbolicity of a horseshoe breaks down. As an application, we obtain a variational characterization of equilibrium measures "at temperature zero" for the corresponding non-uniformly hyperbolic Hénon maps. The method of the proof also yields that the boundary of the hyperbolic horseshoe locus in the parameter space consists of two monotone pieces, which confirms a conjecture in [AI]. The proofs of these results are based on the machinery developed in [AI] which emplo…
We consider the dynamics of strongly dissipative Hénon-like maps in the plane, around the first bifurcation parameter $a^*$ at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of homoclinic or heteroclinic tangencies inside the limit set. In [Takahasi H.: Commun. Math. Phys. {\bf 312} 37-85 (2012)], it was proved that $a^*$ is a full Lebesgue density point of the set of parameters for which Lebesgue almost every initial point diverges to infinity under forward iteration. For these parameters, we show that all Lyapunov exponents of all invariant ergodic Borel probability measures a…
We numerically study quasiperiodic normally hyperbolic attracting invariant circles that appear for certain parameter values in a family of three-dimensional Henon-like maps. These parameter values make up contour segments in the parameter space where the invariant circles have constant irrational rotation number. At the edges of these segments we find a breakdown of the hyperbolicity of the invariant circle. We observe the collision and loss of smoothness of two of the invariant Lyapunov bundles while the Lyapunov exponents all remain distinct. This is very similar to the breakdown of quasipe…
We consider strange attractors of two dimensional generalized map with one nonlinearity such that Lozi, Hénon and Belykh maps are particular cases of it. We describe technique of invariant expanding and contracting cones creation for study of hyperbolic properties. Theorems of singular hyperbolic attractors for new modifications of Lozi, Hénon and Belykh-type maps are presented.
We prove some new continuity results for the Julia sets $J$ and $J^{+}$ of the complex Hénon map $H_{c,a}(x,y)=(x^{2}+c+ay, ax)$, where $a$ and $c$ are complex parameters. We look at the parameter space of dissipative Hénon maps which have a fixed point with one eigenvalue $(1+t)λ$, where $λ$ is a root of unity and $t$ is real and small in absolute value. These maps have a semi-parabolic fixed point when $t$ is $0$, and we use the techniques that we have developed in [RT] for the semi-parabolic case to describe nearby perturbations. We show that for small nonzero $|t|$, the Hénon map is hyperb…
We consider complex Henon maps which are quasi-hyperbolic. We show that a quasi-hyperbolic map is uniformly hyperbolic if and only if there are no tangencies between stable and unstable manifolds.
Let H: C^2 -> C^2 be the Henon mapping given by (x,y) --> (p(x) - ay,x). The key invariant subsets are K_+/-, the sets of points with bounded forward images, J_+/- = the boundary of K_+/-, J = the union of J_+ and J_-, and K = the union of K_+ and K_-. In this paper we identify the topological structure of these sets when p is hyperbolic and |a| is sufficiently small, ie, when H is a small perturbation of the polynomial p. The description involves projective and inductive limits of objects defined in terms of p alone.
We study Henon maps which are perturbations of a hyperbolic polynomial p with connected Julia set. We give a complete description of the critical locus of these maps. In particular, we show that for each critical point c of p, there is a primary component of the critical locus asymptotic to the line y = c. Moreover, primary components are conformally equivalent to the punctured disk, and their orbits cover the whole critical set. We also describe the holonomy maps from such a component to itself along the leaves of two natural foliations. Finally, we show that a quadratic Henon map taken along…
We consider the family of quadratic Hénon diffeomorphisms of the plane ${\bf R}^2$. A map will be said to be a "horseshoe" if its restriction to the nonwandering set is hyperbolic and conjugate to the full 2-shift. We give a criterion for being a horseshoe based on an auxiliary coding which describes positions of points relative to the stable manifold of one of the fixed points. In addition we describe the topological conjugacy type of maps on the boundary of the horseshoe locus. We use complex techniques and we work with maps in a parameter region which is a 2-D analog of the familiar "${1\ov…
We study the dynamics of strongly dissipative Hénon-like maps, around the first bifurcation parameter $a^*$ at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set. We prove that $a^*$ is a full Lebesgue density point of the set of parameters for which Lebesgue almost every initial point diverges to infinity under positive iteration. A key ingredient is that $a^*$ corresponds to "non-recurrence of every critical point", reminiscent of Misiurewicz parameters in one-dimensional dynamics. Adapting on the one hand Benedicks & Carleson's parameter exclusi…
We present a topological proof of the existence of invariant manifolds for maps with normally hyperbolic-like properties. The proof is conducted in the phase space of the system. In our approach we do not require that the map is a perturbation of some other map for which we already have an invariant manifold. We provide conditions which imply the existence of the manifold within an investigated region of the phase space. The required assumptions are formulated in a way which allows for rigorous computer assisted verification. We apply our method to obtain an invariant manifold within an explic…
An invertible dynamical system with some hyperbolic structure is considered. Upper estimates for the correlations of continuous observables is given in terms of modulus of continuity. The result is applied to certain Hénon maps and Solenoid maps with intermittency.
In this study, a theory analogous to both the theories of polynomial-like mappings and Smale's real horseshoes is developed for the study of the dynamics of mappings of two complex variables. In partial analogy with polynomials in a single variable there are the Hénon mappings in two variables as well as higher dimensional analogues. From polynomial-like mappings, Hénon-like and quasi-Hénon-like mappings are defined following this analogy. A special form of the latter is the complex horseshoe. The major results about the real horseshoes of Smale remain true in the complex setting. In particula…
An important class of `physically relevant' measures for dynamical systems with hyperbolic behavior is given by Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen (SRB) measures. We survey various techniques for constructing SRB measures and studying their properties, paying special attention to the geometric `push-forward' approach. After describing this approach in the uniformly hyperbolic setting, we review recent work that extends it to non-uniformly hyperbolic systems.
We show that any weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the 2-torus may be realized as the dynamics on a center-stable or center-unstable torus of a 3-dimensional strongly partially hyperbolic system. We also construct examples of center-stable and center-unstable tori in higher dimensions.
We propose a new method for constructing partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on closed manifolds. As a demonstration of the method we show that there are simply connected closed manifolds that support partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
Dynamics arising persistently in smooth dynamical systems ranges from regular dynamics (periodic, quasiperiodic) to strongly chaotic dynamics (Anosov, uniformly hyperbolic, nonuniformly hyperbolic modelled by Young towers). The latter include many classical examples such as Lorenz and Hénon-like attractors and enjoy strong statistical properties. It is natural to conjecture (or at least hope) that most dynamical systems fall into these two extreme situations. We describe a numerical test for such a conjecture/hope and apply this to the logistic map where the conjecture holds by a theorem of Ly…
We construct the hyperbolic plane with its geodesic flow as the scale plus symmetry reduction of a three-body problem in the Euclidean plane. The potential is $-I/Δ^2$ where $I$ is the triangle's moment of inertia and $Δ$ its area. The reduction method uses the Jacobi-Maupertuis metric, following the author's earlier paper "Putting Hyperbolic Pants on a Three-body Problem".
The paper deals with topical issues of modern mathematical theory of dynamical chaos and its applications. At present, it is customary to assume that dynamical chaos in finitedimensional smooth systems can exist in three different forms. This is dissipative chaos, the mathematical image of which is a strange attractor; conservative chaos, for which the entire phase space is a large "chaotic sea" with randomly spaced elliptical islands inside it; and mixed dynamics, characterized by the principal inseparability in the phase space of attractors, repellers and conservative elements of dynamics. I…
Let $M$ be a closed 3-manifold which admits an Anosov flow. In this paper we develop a technique for constructing partially hyperbolic representatives in many mapping classes of $M$. We apply this technique both in the setting of geodesic flows on closed hyperbolic surfaces and for Anosov flows which admit transverse tori. We emphasize the similarity of both constructions through the concept of $h$-transversality, a tool which allows us to compose different mapping classes while retaining partial hyperbolicity. In the case of the geodesic flow of a closed hyperbolic surface $S$ we build stably…
