Inversion formulas have been found, converting between Stirling, tanh and Lah numbers. Tanh and Lah polynomials, analogous to the Stirling polynomials, have been defined and their basic properties established. New identities for Stirling and tangent numbers and polynomials have been derived from the general inverse relations. In the second part of the paper, it has been shown that if shifted-gamma probability densities and negative binomial distributions are matched by equating their first three semi-invariants (cumulants), then the cumulants of the two distributions are related by a pair of reciprocal linear combinations equivalent to the inversion formulas established in the first part.
We introduce the associated Lah numbers. Some recurrence relations and convolution identities are established. An extension of the associated Stirling and Lah numbers to the r-Stirling and r-Lah numbers are also given. For all these sequences we give combinatorial interpretation, generating functions, recurrence relations, convolution identities. In the sequel, we develop a section on nested sums related to binomial coefficient.
We present various identities in the form of convolutions involving Stirling numbers of both kinds, Lah numbers, and binomial coefficients. Certain convolution polynomials are discussed also. The proofs are based on several series transformation formulas.
This paper studies the generalizations of the Stirling numbers of both kinds and the Lah numbers in association with the normal order problem in the Weyl algebra $W=\langle x,D|Dx-xD=1\rangle$. Any word $ω\in W$ with $m$ $x$'s and $n$ $D$'s can be expressed in the normally ordered form $ω=x^{m-n}\sum_{k\ge 0} {ω\brace {k}} x^{k}D^{k}$, where ${ω\brace {k}}$ is known as the Stirling number of the second kind for the word $ω$. This study considers the expansions of restricted words $ω$ in $W$ over the sequences $\{(xD)^{k}\}_{k\ge 0}$ and $\{xD^{k}x^{k-1}\}_{k\ge 0}$. Interestingly, the coeffici…
The author has constructed multiple analogues of several families of combinatorial numbers in a recent article, including the bracket symbol, and the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind. In the present paper, a multiple analogue of another sequence, the Lah numbers, is developed, and certain associated identities and significant properties of all these sequences are constructed.
In the paper, the authors establish explicit formulas for the Dowling numbers and their generalizations in terms of generalizations of the Lah numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind. These results gen- eralize the Qi formula for the Bell numbers in terms of the Lah numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind.
In this paper, we consider a two-parameter polynomial generalization, denoted by G_{a,b}(n,k;r), of the r-Lah numbers which reduces to these recently introduced numbers when a=b=1. We present several identities for G_{a,b}(n,k;r) that generalize earlier identities given for the r-Lah and r-Stirling numbers. We also provide combinatorial proofs of some identities involving the r-Lah numbers which were established previously using algebraic methods. Generalizing these arguments yields orthogonality-type relations that are satisfied by G_{a,b}(n,k;r).
Given $R \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ let ${n \brace k}_R$, ${n \brack k}_R$, and $L(n,k)_R$ be the number of ways of partitioning the set $[n]$ into $k$ non-empty subsets, cycles and lists, respectively, with each block having cardinality in $R$. We refer to these as the $R$-restricted Stirling numbers of the second and first kind and the $R$-restricted Lah numbers, respectively. Note that the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind and first kind, and Lah numbers are ${n \brace k} = {n \brace k}_{\mathbb{N}}$, ${n \brack k} = {n \brack k}_{\mathbb{N}} $ and $L(n,k) = L(n,k)_{\mathbb{N}}$, res…
We provide q-generalizations of Spivey's Bell number formula in various settings by considering statistics on different combinatorial structures. This leads to new identities involving q-Stirling numbers of both kinds and q-Lah numbers. As corollaries, we obtain identities for both binomial and q-binomial coefficients. Our results at the same time also generalize recent r-Stirling number formulas of Mezo. Finally, we provide a combinatorial proof and refinement of Xu's extension of Spivey's formula to the generalized Stirling numbers of Hsu and Shiue. To do so, we develop a combinatorial inter…
In this paper, we show that the r-Stirling numbers of both kinds, the r-Whitney numbers of both kinds, the r-Lah numbers and the r-Whitney-Lah numbers form particular cases of family of polynomials forming a generalization of the partial Bell polynomials. We deduce the generating functions of several restrictions of these numbers. In addition, a new combinatorial interpretations is presented for the r-Whitney numbers and the r-Whitney-Lah numbers.
Let $ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots$ be a sequence of independent copies of a random vector in $\mathbb R^d$ having an absolutely continuous distribution. Consider a random walk $S_i:=ξ_1+\cdots+ξ_i$, and let $C_{n,d}:=\text{conv}(0,S_1,S_2,\ldots,S_n)$ be the convex hull of the first $n+1$ points it has visited. The polytope $C_{n,d}$ is called $k$-neighborly if for every indices $0\leq i_0 <\cdots < i_k\leq n$ the convex hull of the $k+1$ points $S_{i_0},\ldots, S_{i_k}$ is a $k$-dimensional face of $C_{n,d}$. We study the probability that $C_{n,d}$ is $k$-neighborly in various high-dimensional asymptotic r…
In the paper, utilizing respectively the induction, a generating function of the Lah numbers, the Chu-Vandermonde summation formula, an inversion formula, the Gauss hypergeometric series, and two generating functions of the Stirling numbers of the first kind, the authors collect and provide six proofs for an identity of the Lah numbers.
The Stirling number of a simple graph is the number of partitions of its vertex set into a specific number of non-empty independent sets. In 2015, Engbers et al. showed that the coefficients in the normal ordering of a word $w$ in the alphabet $\{x,D\}$ subject to the relation $Dx=xD+1$ are equal to the Stirling number of certain graphs constructed from $w$. In this paper, we introduce graphical versions of the Stirling numbers of the first kind and the Lah numbers and show how they occur as coefficients in other normal ordering settings. Identities involving their $q$-analogues are also obtai…
The derivative polynomials for the hyperbolic and trigonometric tangent, cotangent and secant are found in explicit form, where the coefficients are given in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind. As application, some integrals are evaluated and the reflection formula for the polygamma function is written in explicit form.
Consider the Fibonacci numbers defined by setting $F_1=1=F_2$ and $F_n =F_{n-1}+F_{n-2}$ for $n \geq 3$. We let $n_F! = F_1 \cdots F_n$ and $\binom{n}{k}_F = \frac{n_F!}{k_F!(n-k)_F!}$. Let $(x)_{\downarrow_0} = (x)_{\uparrow_0} = 1$ and for $k \geq 1$, $(x)_{\downarrow_k} = x(x-1) \cdots (x-k+1)$ and $(x)_{\uparrow_k} = x(x+1) \cdots (x+k-1)$. Then the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind are the connections coefficients between the usual power basis $\{x^n:n \geq 0\}$ and the falling factorial basis $\{(x)_{\downarrow_n}:n \geq 0\}$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[x]$ and the Lah…
The objective of this paper is, in the main, twofold: Firstly, to develop an algebraic setting for dealing with Bell polynomials and related extensions. Secondly, based on the author's previous work on multivariate Stirling polynomials (2015), to present a number of new results related to different types of inverse relationships, among these (1) the use of multivariable Lah polynomials for characterizing self-orthogonal families of polynomials that can be represented by Bell polynomials, (2) the introduction of `generalized Lagrange inversion polynomials' that invert functions characterized in…
