We prove that the Penrose limit of a spacetime along a homogeneous geodesic is a homogeneous plane wave spacetime and that the Penrose limit of a reductive homogeneous spacetime along a homogeneous geodesic is a Cahen--Wallach space. We then consider several homogenous examples to show that these results are indeed sharp and conclude with a remark about the existence of null homogeneous geodesics.

Penrose limits, supergravity and brane dynamics

We investigate the Penrose limits of classical string and M-theory backgrounds. We prove that the number of (super)symmetries of a supergravity background never decreases in the limit. We classify all the possible Penrose limits of AdS x S spacetimes and of supergravity brane solutions. We also present the Penrose limits of various other solutions: intersecting branes, supersymmetric black holes and strings in diverse dimensions, and cosmological models. Penrose limits of Lie Branes and a Nappi--Witten braneworld

Departing from the observation that the Penrose limit of AdS_3 x S^3 is a group contraction in the sense of Inonu and Wigner, we explore the relation between the symmetric D-branes of AdS_3 x S^3 and those of its Penrose limit, a six-dimensional symmetric plane wave analogous to the four-dimensional Nappi--Witten spacetime. Penrose limits and maximal supersymmetry

We show that the maximally supersymmetric pp-waves of IIB superstring and M-theories can be obtained as a Penrose limit of the supersymmetric AdS x S solutions. In addition we find that in a certain large tension limit, the geometry seen by a brane probe in an AdS x S background is either Minkowski space or a maximally supersymmetric pp-wave.

The Conformal Penrose Limit: Back to Square One

We show that the conformal Penrose limit is an ordinary plane wave limit in a higher dimensional framework which resolves the spacetime singularity. The higher dimensional framework is provided by Ricci-flat manifolds which are of the form M_D = M_d x B, where M_d is an Einstein spacetime that has a negative cosmological constant and admits a spacelike conformal Killing vector, and B is a complete Sasaki-Einstein space with constant sectional curvature. As a footnote to arXiv:1909.07756, I show that, given a (time-like) umbilic 3-surface $Σ$ in a 4-dimensional space-time $M$, the Penrose limit taken along any null geodesic $Γ$ which lies in $Σ$ is a diagonalisable plane-wave.

Finsler pp-waves and the Penrose Limit

The Penrose plane wave limit is a remarkable property of Lorentzian spacetimes. Here, we discuss its extension to Finsler spacetimes by introducing suitable lightlike coordinates and adapting the Lorentzian definition of pp-waves. New examples of such Finsler pp-waves are also presented.

On the Penrose inequality along null hypersurfaces

The null Penrose inequality, i.e. the Penrose inequality in terms of the Bondi energy, is studied by introducing a funtional on surfaces and studying its properties along a null hypersurface $Ω$ extending to past null infinity.
