We report on progress in algorithms for iterative phase retrieval. The theory of convex optimization is used to develop and to gain insight into counterparts for the nonconvex problem of phase retrieval. We propose a relaxation of averaged alternating reflectors and determine the fixed point set of the related operator in the convex case. A numerical study supports our theoretical observations and demonstrates the effectiveness of the algorithm compared to the current state of the art.
Phase retrieval can be expressed as one non-convex constrained optimization problem to identify one phase minimizer in the primal space. Many iterative transform techniques have been proposed to identify the minimizer, e.g., relaxed averaged alternating reflections(RAAR) algorithms. RAAR algorithm is one alternating direction method of multipliers(ADMM) with one penalty parameter. Pairing with multipliers (dual vectors), phase vectors are lifted to higher dimensional vectors, RAAR algorithms actually is one continuation algorithm, which searches for local Nash equilibria in a primal-dual space…
We focus on the convergence analysis of averaged relaxations of cutters, specifically for variants that---depending upon how parameters are chosen---resemble \emph{alternating projections}, the \emph{Douglas--Rachford method}, \emph{relaxed reflect-reflect}, or the \emph{Peaceman--Rachford} method. Such methods are frequently used to solve convex feasibility problems. The standard convergence analyses of projection algorithms are based on the \emph{firm nonexpansivity} property of the relevant operators. However if the projections onto the constraint sets are replaced by cutters (projections o…
This paper presents new variants of the averaged alternating modified reflections (AAMR) method for the best approximation problem. Under a mild constraint qualification, we first show its weak convergence and then establish a convergence rate. Furthermore, under a standard interior-point-like condition, we show that the method has a finite termination property.
The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is a popular method for solving convex separable minimization problems with linear equality constraints. The generalization of the two-block ADMM to the three-block ADMM is not trivial since the three-block ADMM is not convergence in general. Many variants of three-block ADMM have been developed with guarantee convergence. Besides the ADMM, the alternating minimization algorithm (AMA) is also an important algorithm for solving the convex separable minimization problem with linear equality constraints. The AMA is first proposed by Tseng, an…
Motivated by nonconvex, inconsistent feasibility problems in imaging, the relaxed alternating averaged reflections algorithm, or relaxed Douglas-Rachford algorithm (DR$λ$), was first proposed over a decade ago. Convergence results for this algorithm are limited either to convex feasibility or consistent nonconvex feasibility with strong assumptions on the regularity of the underlying sets. Using an analytical framework depending only on metric subregularity and pointwise almost averagedness, we analyze the convergence behavior of DR$λ$ for feasibility problems that are both nonconvex and incon…
Alternating projection based methods, such as ePIE and rPIE, have been used widely in ptychography. However, they only work well if there are adequate measurements (diffraction patterns); in the case of sparse data (i.e. fewer measurements) alternating projection underperforms and might not even converge. In this paper, we propose semi-implicit relaxed Douglas Rachford (sir-DR), an accelerated iterative method, to solve the classical ptychography problem. Using both simulated and experimental data, we show that sir-DR improves the convergence speed and the reconstruction quality relative to eP…
This paper derives new inexact variants of the Douglas-Rachford splitting method for maximal monotone operators and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for convex optimization. The analysis is based on a new inexact version of the proximal point algorithm that includes both an inertial step and overrelaxation. We apply our new inexact ADMM method to LASSO and logistic regression problems and obtain somewhat better computational performance than earlier inexact ADMM methods.
The paper is concerned with the minimal drag problem in shape optimization of merchant ships exposed to turbulent two-phase flows. Attention is directed to the solution of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using a Finite Volume method. Central aspects are the use of a p-Laplacian relaxed steepest descent direction and the introduction of crucial technical constraints to the optimization procedure, i.e. the center of buoyancy and the displacement of the underwater hull. The example included refers to the frequently investigated Kriso container ship (KCS).
This paper is about line search for the generalized alternating projections (GAP) method. This method is a generalization of the von Neumann alternating projections method, where instead of performing alternating projections, relaxed projections are alternated. The method can be interpreted as an averaged iteration of a nonexpansive mapping. Therefore, a recently proposed line search method for such algorithms is applicable to GAP. We evaluate this line search and show situations when the line search can be performed with little additional cost. We also present a variation of the basic line se…
Generalized alternating projections is an algorithm that alternates relaxed projections onto a finite number of sets to find a point in their intersection. We consider the special case of two linear subspaces, for which the algorithm reduces to a matrix teration. For convergent matrix iterations, the asymptotic rate is linear and decided by the magnitude of the subdominant eigenvalue. In this paper, we show how to select the three algorithm parameters to optimize this magnitude, and hence the asymptotic convergence rate. The obtained rate depends on the Friedrichs angle between the subspaces a…
The framework of Integral Quadratic Constraints of Lessard et al. (2014) reduces the computation of upper bounds on the convergence rate of several optimization algorithms to semi-definite programming (SDP). Followup work by Nishihara et al. (2015) applies this technique to the entire family of over-relaxed Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). Unfortunately, they only provide an explicit error bound for sufficiently large values of some of the parameters of the problem, leaving the computation for the general case as a numerical optimization problem. In this paper we provide an …
Statistical image reconstruction (SIR) methods are studied extensively for X-ray computed tomography (CT) due to the potential of acquiring CT scans with reduced X-ray dose while maintaining image quality. However, the longer reconstruction time of SIR methods hinders their use in X-ray CT in practice. To accelerate statistical methods, many optimization techniques have been investigated. Over-relaxation is a common technique to speed up convergence of iterative algorithms. For instance, using a relaxation parameter that is close to two in alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) has…
We propose a novel algorithmic framework of Variable Metric Over-Relaxed Hybrid Proximal Extra-gradient (VMOR-HPE) method with a global convergence guarantee for the maximal monotone operator inclusion problem. Its iteration complexities and local linear convergence rate are provided, which theoretically demonstrate that a large over-relaxed step-size contributes to accelerating the proposed VMOR-HPE as a byproduct. Specifically, we find that a large class of primal and primal-dual operator splitting algorithms are all special cases of VMOR-HPE. Hence, the proposed framework offers a new insig…
Large sectors of the recent optimization literature focused in the last decade on the development of optimal stochastic first order schemes for constrained convex models under progressively relaxed assumptions. Stochastic proximal point is an iterative scheme born from the adaptation of proximal point algorithm to noisy stochastic optimization, with a resulting iteration related to stochastic alternating projections. Inspired by the scalability of alternating projection methods, we start from the (linear) regularity assumption, typically used in convex feasiblity problems to guarantee the line…

In this paper, we develop a parameterized proximal point algorithm (P-PPA) for solving a class of separable convex programming problems subject to linear and convex constraints. The proposed algorithm is provable to be globally convergent with a worst-case O(1/t) convergence rate, wheret denotes the iteration number. By properly choosing the algorithm parameters, numerical experiments on solving a sparse optimization problem arising from statistical learning show that our P-PPA could perform significantly better than other state-of-the-art methods, such as the alternating direction method of m…
A local convergence result for abstract descent methods is proved. The sequence of iterates is attracted by a local (or global) minimum, stays in its neighborhood and converges within this neighborhood. This result allows algorithms to exploit local properties of the objective function. In particular, the abstract theory in this paper applies to the inertial forward--backward splitting method: iPiano---a generalization of the Heavy-ball method. Moreover, it reveals an equivalence between iPiano and inertial averaged/alternating proximal minimization and projection methods. Key for this equival…
In this work we show that various algorithms, ubiquitous in convex optimization (e.g. proximal-gradient, alternating projections and averaged projections) generate self-contracted sequences $\{x_{k}\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$. As a consequence, a novel universal bound for the \emph{length} ($\sum_{k\ge 0}\Vert x_{k+1}-x_k\Vert$) can be deduced. In addition, this bound is independent of both the concrete data of the problem (sets, functions) as well as the stepsize involved, and only depends on the dimension of the space.
The proximal generalized alternating direction method of multipliers (p-GADMM) is substantially efficient for solving convex composite programming problems of high-dimensional to moderate accuracy. The global convergence of this method was established by Xiao, Chen & Li [Math. Program. Comput., 2018], but its convergence rate was not given. One may take it for granted that the convergence rate could be proved easily by mimicking the proximal ADMM, but we find the relaxed points will certainly cause many difficulties for theoretical analysis. In this paper, we devote to exploring its convergenc…
This paper presents the Distributed Primal Outer Approximation (DiPOA) algorithm for solving Sparse Convex Programming (SCP) problems with separable structures, efficiently, and in a decentralized manner. The DiPOA algorithm development consists of embedding the recently proposed Relaxed Hybrid Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (RH-ADMM) algorithm into the Outer Approximation (OA) algorithm. We also propose two main improvements to control the quality and the number of cutting planes that approximate nonlinear functions. In particular, the RH-ADMM algorithm acts as a distributed nume…

Recent years have seen increased interest in performance guarantees of gradient descent algorithms for non-convex optimization. A number of works have uncovered that gradient noise plays a critical role in the ability of gradient descent recursions to efficiently escape saddle-points and reach second-order stationary points. Most available works limit the gradient noise component to be bounded with probability one or sub-Gaussian and leverage concentration inequalities to arrive at high-probability results. We present an alternate approach, relying primarily on mean-square arguments and show t…
Consider the classical problem of solving a general linear system of equations $Ax=b$. It is well known that the (successively over relaxed) Gauss-Seidel scheme and many of its variants may not converge when $A$ is neither diagonally dominant nor symmetric positive definite. Can we have a linearly convergent G-S type algorithm that works for {\it any} $A$? In this paper we answer this question affirmatively by proposing a doubly stochastic G-S algorithm that is provably linearly convergent (in the mean square error sense) for any feasible linear system of equations. The key in the algorithm de…
