We consider a condition for non-degenerate commuting squares of matrix algebras (finite dimensional von Neumann algebras) called the \emph{span condition}, which in the case of the $n$-dimensional standard spin models is shown to be satisfied if and only if $n$ is prime. We prove that the commuting squares satisfying the span condition are isolated among all commuting squares (modulo isomorphisms). In particular, they are finiteley many for any fixed dimension. Also, we give a conceptual proof of previous constructions of certain one-parameter families of biunitaries.
We show a close relationship between non-degenerate smooth commuting squares of $II_1$-factors with all inclusions of finite index and inclusions of subfactor planar algebras by showing that each leads to a construction of the other. One direction of this uses the Guionnet-Jones-Shlyakhtenko construction.
Let $M_0 \subset M_1$ be a finite-index infinite-depth hyperfinite $II_1$ subfactor and $ω$ a free ultrafilter of the natural numbers. We show that if this subfactor is constructed from a commuting square then the central sequence inclusion $M_0^ω \cap M_1' \subset (M_0)_ω$ has infinite Pimnser-Popa index. We will also demonstrate this result for certain infinite-depth hyperfinite subfactors coming from groups.
We consider commuting squares of finite dimensional von Neumann algebras having the algebra of complex numbers in the lower left corner. Examples include the vertex models, the spin models (in the sense of subfactor theory) and the commuting squares associated to finite dimensional Kac algebras. To any such commuting square we associate a compact Kac algebra and we compute the corresponding subfactor and its standard invariant in terms of it.
Subfactors of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor with ''exotic'' properties can be constructed from nondegenerate commuting squares of multi-matrix algebras. We show that the subfactor planar algebra of these commuting square subfactors necessarily embeds into Jones' graph planar algebra associated to one of the inclusion graphs in the commuting square. This leads to a powerful obstruction for the standard invariant of the subfactor, and we use it to give an example of a hyperfinite subfactor with Temperley-Lieb-Jones standard invariant and index $\frac{5+\sqrt{13}}{2}$, i.e. the index of the Haage…
A hyperfinite $II_1$ subfactor may be obtained from a symmetric commuting square via iteration of the basic construction. For certain commuting squares constructed from Hadamard matrices, we describe this subfactor as a group-type inclusion $R^H \subset R \rtimes K$, where $H$ and $K$ are finite groups with outer actions on the hyperfinite $II_1$ factor $R$. We find the group of outer automorphisms generated by $H$ and $K$, and use the method of Bisch and Haagerup to determine the principal and dual principal graphs. In some cases a complete classification is obtained by examining the element …
We show that if A_1, A_2, ... , A_n are square matrices, each of them is either unitary or self-adjoint, and they almost commute with respect to the rank metric, then one can find commuting matrices B_1, B_2, ... , B_n that are close to the matrices A_i in the rank metric.
Results of Fowler and Sims show that every k-graph is completely determined by its k-coloured skeleton and collection of commuting squares. Here we give an explicit description of the k-graph associated to a given skeleton and collection of squares and show that two k-graphs are isomorphic if and only if there is an isomorphism of their skeletons which preserves commuting squares. We use this to prove directly that each k-graph Λ is isomorphic to the quotient of the path category of its skeleton by the equivalence relation determined by the commuting squares, and show that this extends to a ho…
The zipper condition for $4$-tensors in two-dimensional topological order and the higher relative commutants of a subfactor arising from a commuting square
For models of non-interacting fermions moving within sites arranged on a surface in three dimensional space, there can be obstructions to finding localized Wannier functions. We show that such obstructions are $K$-theoretic obstructions to approximating almost commuting, complex-valued matrices by commuting matrices, and we demonstrate numerically the presence of this obstruction for a lattice model of the quantum Hall effect in a spherical geometry. The numerical calculation of the obstruction is straightforward, and does not require translational invariance or introducing a flux torus. We fu…
Given two algebras A and B, sometimes assumed to be C*-algebras, we consider the question of putting algebra or C*-algebra structures on the tensor product A\otimes B. In the C*-case, assuming B to be two-dimensonal, we characterize all possible such C*-algebra structures in terms of an action of the cyclic group Z_2. An example related to commuting squares is also discussed.
A {\it W$^*$-representation} of a II$_1$ subfactor $N\subset M$ with finite Jones index, $[M:N]<\infty$, is a non-degenerate commuting square embedding of $N\subset M$ into an inclusion of atomic von Neumann algebras $\oplus_{i\in I} \Cal B(\Cal K_i)=\Cal N \subset^{\Cal E} \Cal M=\oplus_{j\in J} \Cal B(\Cal H_j)$. We undertake here a systematic study of this notion, first introduced in [P92], giving examples and considering invariants such as the (bipartite) {\it inclusion graph} $Λ_{\Cal N \subset \Cal M}$, the {\it coupling vector} $(\text{\rm dim}(_M\Cal H_j))_j$ and the {\it RC-algebra} (…
The higher rank graphs of Kumjian and Pask are discrete Conduche fibrations over the monoid of k-tuples of natural numbers for some k in which every morphism in the base has a finite preimage under the the fibration. We examine the generalization of this construction to discrete Conduche fibrations with the same finiteness condition and a lifting property for completions of cospans to commutative squares, over any category satisfying a strong version of the right Ore condition, including all categories with pullbacks and right Ore categories in which all morphisms are monic.
Quantum permutation matrices and quantum magic squares are generalizations of permutation matrices and magic squares, where the entries are no longer numbers but elements from arbitrary (non-commutative) algebras. The famous Birkhoff--von Neumann Theorem characterizes magic squares as convex combinations of permutation matrices. In the non-commutative case, the corresponding question is: Does every quantum magic square belong to the matrix convex hull of quantum permutation matrices? That is, does every quantum magic square dilate to a quantum permutation matrix? Here we show that this is fals…
We characterize the non-commutative Aleksandrov--Clark measures and the minimal realization formulas of contractive and, in particular, isometric non-commutative rational multipliers of the Fock space. Here, the full Fock space over $\mathbb{C} ^d$ is defined as the Hilbert space of square--summable power series in several non-commuting formal variables, and we interpret this space as the non-commutative and multi-variable analogue of the Hardy space of square--summable Taylor series in the complex unit disk. We further obtain analogues of several classical results in Aleksandrov--Clark measur…
