3-manifolds that admit knotted solenoids as attractors

Motivated by the study in Morse theory and Smale's work in dynamics, the following questions are studied and answered: (1) When does a 3-manifold admit an automorphism having a knotted Smale solenoid as an attractor? (2) When does a 3-manifold admit an automorphism whose non-wandering set consists of Smale solenoids? The result presents some intrinsic symmetries for a class of 3-manifolds.

Knotted toroidal sets, attractors and incompressible surfaces

In this paper we give a complete characterization of those knotted toroidal sets that can be realized as attractors for both discrete and continuous dynamical systems globally defined in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We also see that the techniques used to solve this problem can be used to give sufficient conditions to ensure that a wide class of subcompacta of $\mathbb{R}^3$ that are attractors for homeomorphisms must also be attractors for flows. In addition we study certain attractor-repeller decompositions of $\mathbb{S}^3$ which arise naturally when considering toroidal sets.

Alternating Heegaard diagrams and Williams solenoid attractors in 3--manifolds

We find all Heegaard diagrams with the property "alternating" or "weakly alternating" on a genus two orientable closed surface. Using these diagrams we give infinitely many genus two 3--manifolds, each admits an automorphism whose non-wondering set consists of two Williams solenoids, one attractor and one repeller. Knots and solenoids that cannot be attractors of self-homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^3$

As a first step to understand how complicated attractors for dynamical systems can be, one may consider the following realizability problem: given a continuum $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$, decide when $K$ can be realized as an attractor for a homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}^3$. In this paper we introduce toroidal sets as those continua $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$ that have a neighbourhood basis comprised of solid tori and, generalizing the classical notion of genus of a knot, give a natural definition of the genus of toroidal sets and study some of its properties. On the fundamental groups of solenoid complements in $\mathbb{S}^3$

We show that fundamental groups of the complements of knotted solenoids in $\mathbb{S}^3$ is solely determined by a canonical sequence of knot groups. Moreover it its determined by the embedding up to mirror reflection.

Genus two Smale-Williams solenoids in 3-manifolds

Using alternating Heegaard diagrams, we construct some 3-manifolds which admit diffeomorphisms such that the non-wandering sets of the diffeomorphisms are composed of Smale-Williams solenoid attractors and repellers, an interesting example is the truncated-cube space. In addition, we prove that if the nonwandering set of the diffeomorphism consists of genus two Smale-Williams solenoids, then the Heegaard genus of the closed manifold is at most two.
