This paper is a gentle introduction to some recent results involving the theory of gerbes over orbifolds for topologists, geometers and physicists. We introduce gerbes on manifolds, orbifolds, the Dixmier-Douady class, Beilinson-Deligne orbifold cohomology, Cheeger-Simons orbifold cohomology and string connections.

On the relative dual of an $S^1$-gerbe over an orbifold

We construct a new effective orbifold $\widehat{\Y}$ with an $S^1$-gerbe $c$ to study an $S^1$-gerbe $\mathfrak{t}$ on a $G$-gerbe $\Y$ over an orbifold $\B$. We view the former as the relative dual, relative to $\B$, of the latter. We show that the two pairs $(\Y, \mathfrak{t})$ and $(\widehat{\Y}, c)$ have isomorphic categories of sheaves, and also the associated twisted groupoid algebras are Morita equivalent. As a corollary, the K-theory and cohomology groups of $(\Y, \mathfrak{t})$ and $(\widehat{\Y}, c)$ are isomorphic.

Duality theorems for étale gerbes on orbifolds

Let $G$ be a finite group and $\Y$ a $G$-gerbe over an orbifold $\B$. A disconnected orbifold $\hat{\Y}$ and a flat U(1)-gerbe $c$ on $\hat{\Y}$ is canonically constructed from $\Y$. Motivated by a proposal in physics, we study a mathematical duality between the geometry of the $G$-gerbe $\Y$ and the geometry of $\hat{\Y}$ {\em twisted by} $c$. We prove several results verifying this duality in the contexts of noncommutative geometry and symplectic topology. Discrete Torsion and Gerbes I

In this technical note we give a purely geometric understanding of discrete torsion, as an analogue of orbifold Wilson lines for two-form tensor field potentials. In order to introduce discrete torsion in this context, we describe gerbes and the description of certain type II supergravity tensor field potentials as connections on gerbes. Discrete Torsion and Gerbes II

In a previous paper we outlined how discrete torsion can be understood geometrically as an analogue of orbifold U(1) Wilson lines. In this paper we shall prove the remaining details. More precisely, in this paper we describe gerbes in terms of objects known as stacks (essentially, sheaves of categories), and develop much of the basic theory of gerbes in such language. Deligne Cohomology for Orbifolds, discrete torsion and B-fields

In this paper we introduce the concept of Deligne cohomology of an orbifold. We prove that the third Deligne cohomology group of a smooth étale groupoid classify gerbes with connection over the groupoid. We argue that the $B$-field and the discrete torsion in type II superstring theories are special kinds of gerbes with connection, and finally, for each one of them, using Deligne cohomology we construct a flat line bundle over the inertia groupoid, namely a Ruan inner local in the case of an orbifold.

Sheaf Theory for Étale Geometric Stacks

We generalize the notion of a small sheaf of sets over a topological space or manifold to define the notion of a small stack of groupoids over an étale topological or differentiable stack. We then provide a construction analogous to the étalé space construction in this context, establishing an equivalence of 2-categories between small stacks over an étale stack and local homeomorphisms over it. Differential Characters on Orbifolds and String Connections I

In this paper we introduce the Cheeger-Simons cohomology of a global quotient orbifold. We prove that the Cheeger-Simons cohomology of the orbifold is isomorphic to its Beilinson-Deligne cohomology. Furthermore we construct a string connection (à la Segal) from a global gerbe with connection over the loop orbifold, refining the corresponding differential character.

Supersymmetric field theories from twisted vector bundles

We give a description of the delocalized twisted cohomology of an orbifold and the Chern character of a twisted vector bundle in terms of supersymmetric Euclidean field theories. This includes the construction of a twist functor for $1|1$-dimensional EFTs from the data of a gerbe with connection.
