Let Q_i, i=1,...,t, be real nondegenerate indefinite quadratic forms in d variables. We investigate under what conditions the closure of the set {(Q_1(x),...,Q_t(x)): x\in Z^d-{0}} contains (0,..,0). As a corollary, we deduce several results on the magnitude of the set Δof g\in GL(d,R) such that the closure of the set {(Q_1(gx),...,Q_t(gx)): x\in Z^d-{0}} contains (0,...,0). Special cases are described when depending on the mutual position of the hypersurfaces {Q_i=0}, i=1,...,t, the set Δhas full Haar measure or measure zero and Hausdorff dimension d^2-(d-2)/2.
We prove a quantitative version of Oppenheim's conjecture for generic ternary indefinite quadratic forms. Our results are inspired by and analogous to recent results for diagonal quadratic forms due to Bourgain.
A quantitative version of the Oppenheim conjecture for inhomogeneous quadratic forms is proved. We also give an application to eigenvalue spacing on flat 2-tori with Aharonov-Bohm flux.
Let Q be a nondegenerate quadratic form, and L is a nonzero linear form of dimension d>3. As a generalization of the Oppenheim conjecture, we prove that the set {(Q(x),L(x)):x\in Z^d} is dense in R^2 provided that Q and L satisfy some natural conditions. The proof uses dynamics on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups.
The celebrated result of Eskin, Margulis and Mozes (1998) and Dani and Margulis (1993) on quantitative Oppenheim conjecture says that for irrational quadratic forms $q$ of rank at least 5, the number of integral vectors $\mathbf v$ such that $q(\mathbf v)$ is in a given bounded interval is asymptotically equal to the volume of the set of real vectors $\mathbf v$ such that $q(\mathbf v)$ is in the same interval. In dimension $3$ or $4$, there are exceptional quadratic forms which fail to satisfy the quantitative Oppenheim conjecture. Even in those cases, one can say that almost all quadratic fo…
We prove an analogue of the Oppenheim conjecture for a system comprising an inhomogeneous quadratic form and a linear form in $3$ variables using dynamics on the space of affine lattices.
The analogous statement to Oppenheim conjecture over a local field of positive characteristic is proved. The dynamical argument is most involved in the case of characteristic 3.
We prove an effective equidistribution theorem for orbits of horospherical subgroups of $\mathrm{SO}(2, 2)$ and $\mathrm{SO}(3, 1)$ in quotients of $\mathrm{SL}_4(\mathbb{R})$ with a polynomial error term. In a forthcoming paper, we will use this theorem to prove an effective version of the Oppenheim conjecture for indefinite quadratic forms of signature $(2, 2)$ or $(3, 1)$ with a polynomial error rate.
We establish effective versions of Oppenheim's conjecture for generic inhomogeneous quadratic forms. We prove such results for fixed quadratic forms and generic shifts. Our results complement our companion paper where we considered generic forms and fixed shifts. In this paper, we use ergodic theorems and in particular we establish a strong spectral gap with effective bounds for some representations of orthogonal groups which do not possess Kazhdan's property (T).
Let $G=$SL$(2,R)\ltimes(R^2)^{\oplus k}$ and let $Γ$ be a congruence subgroup of SL$(2,Z)\ltimes(Z^2)^{\oplus k}$. We prove a polynomially effective asymptotic equidistribution result for special types of unipotent orbits in $Γ\backslash G$ which project to pieces of closed horocycles in SL$(2,Z)\backslash$SL$(2,R)$. As an application, we prove an effective quantitative Oppenheim type result for the quadratic form $(m_1-α)^2+(m_2-β)^2-(m_3-α)^2-(m_4-β)^2$, for $(α,β)$ of Diophantine type, following the approach by Marklof [24] using theta sums.
The purpose of this note is give some evidence in support of conjectures of Poonen, and Morton and Silverman, on the periods of rational numbers under the iteration of quadratic polynomials. In particular, Poonen conjectured that there are at most 9 periodic points defined over the rational numbers for any map in the family x^2 + c for c rational. We verify this conjecture for c values up to height 10^8. For quadratic number fields, we provide evidence that the upper bound on the exact period of Q-rational periodic point is 6.
Fix a rational basepoint b and a rational number c. For the quadratic dynamical system f_c(x) = x^2+c, it has been shown that the number of rational points in the backward orbit of b is bounded independent of the choice of rational parameter c. In this short note we investigate the dependence of the bound on the basepoint b, assuming a strong form of the Mordell Conjecture.
We classify the graphs that can occur as the graph of rational preperiodic points of a quadratic polynomial over $\bold Q$, assuming the conjecture that it is impossible to have rational points of period $4$ or higher. In particular, we show under this assumption that the number of preperiodic points is at most~$9$. Elliptic curves of small conductor and the genus~$2$ modular curves $X_1(13)$, $X_1(16)$, and $X_1(18)$ all arise as curves classifying quadratic polynomials with various combinations of preperiodic points. To complete the classification, we compute the rational points on a non-mod…
Under explicit diophantine conditions on $(α,β)\in\RR^2$, we prove that the local two-point correlations of the sequence given by the values $(m-α)^2+\break (n-β)^2$, with $(m,n)\in\ZZ^2$, are those of a Poisson process. This partly confirms a conjecture of Berry and Tabor [2] on spectral statistics of quantized integrable systems, and also establishes a particular case of the quantitative version of the Oppenheim conjecture for inhomogeneous quadratic forms of signature (2,2). The proof uses theta sums and Ratner's classification of measures invariant under unipotent flows.
We prove effective versions of Oppenheim's conjecture for generic inhomogeneous forms in the S-arithmetic setting. We prove an effective result for fixed rational shifts and generic forms and we also prove a result where both the quadratic form and the shift are allowed to vary. In order to do so, we prove analogues of Rogers' moment formulae for $S$-arithmetic congruence quotients as well as for the space of affine lattices. We believe the latter results to be of independent interest.
We prove the logarithmic Sarnak conjecture for sequences of subquadratic word growth. In particular, we show that the Liouville function has at least quadratically many sign patterns. We deduce the main theorem from a variant which bounds the correlations between multiplicative functions and sequences with subquadratically many sign patterns which occur with positive logarithmic density. This allows us to actually prove that our multiplicative functions do not locally correlate with sequences of subquadratic word growth. We also prove a conditional result which shows that if the $κ-1$-Fourier …
Let $f \in Q(z)$ be a polynomial or rational function of degree 2. A special case of Morton and Silverman's Dynamical Uniform Boundedness Conjecture states that the number of rational preperiodic points of $f$ is bounded above by an absolute constant. A related conjecture of Silverman states that the canonical height $\hat{h}_f(x)$ of a non-preperiodic rational point $x$ is bounded below by a uniform multiple of the height of $f$ itself. We provide support for these conjectures by computing the set of preperiodic and small height rational points for a set of degree 2 maps far beyond the range …
We show that the Vojta (or Hall-Lang) conjecture implies that the arboreal Galois representations in a 1-parameter family of quadratic polynomials are surjective if and only if they surject onto some finite and uniform quotient. As an application, we use the Vojta conjecture, our uniformity theorem over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$, and Hilbert's irreducibility theorem to prove that the prime divisors of many quadratic orbits have density zero.
We study the bifurcation loci of quadratic (and unicritical) polynomials and exponential maps. We outline a proof that the exponential bifurcation locus is connected; this is an analog to Douady and Hubbard's celebrated theorem that (the boundary of) the Mandelbrot set is connected. For these parameter spaces, a fundamental conjecture is that hyperbolic dynamics is dense. For quadratic polynomials, this would follow from the famous stronger conjecture that the bifurcation locus (or equivalently the Mandelbrot set) is locally connected. It turns out that a formally slightly weaker statement is …
In this paper, the global qualitative analysis of planar quadratic dynamical systems is established and a new geometric approach to solving Hilbert's Sixteenth Problem in this special case of polynomial systems is suggested. Using geometric properties of four field rotation parameters of a new canonical system which is constructed in this paper, we present a proof of our earlier conjecture that the maximum number of limit cycles in a quadratic system is equal to four and the only possible their distribution is (3:1). Besides, applying the Wintner-Perko termination principle for multiple limit …
