Integer programming is concerned with solving linear systems of equations over the non-negative integers. The basic question is to find a solution which minimizes a given linear objective function for a fixed right hand side. Here we also consider parametric versions where the objective function and the right hand side are allowed to vary. The main emphasis is on Gröbner bases, rational generating functions, and how to use existing software packages. Concrete applications to problems in statistical modeling will be presented.
These are the notes for a lecture to be given during the AMS Short Course, ``Trends in Optimization'', prior to the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Phoenix on January 5-6, 2004.
In this note, we use a natural desingularization of the conormal variety of the variety of n x n symmetric matrices of rank at most r to find a general formula for the algebraic degree in semidefinite programming.
For an arbitrary finite family of semi-algebraic/definable functions, we consider the corresponding inequality constraint set and we study qualification conditions for perturbations of this set. In particular we prove that all positive diagonal perturbations, save perhaps a finite number of them, ensure that any point within the feasible set satisfies Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification. Using the Milnor-Thom theorem, we provide a bound for the number of singular perturbations when the constraints are polynomial functions. Examples show that the order of magnitude of our exponential…
Given a generic semidefinite program, specified by matrices with rational entries, each coordinate of its optimal solution is an algebraic number. We study the degree of the minimal polynomials of these algebraic numbers. Geometrically, this degree counts the critical points attained by a linear functional on a fixed rank locus in a linear space of symmetric matrices. We determine this degree using methods from complex algebraic geometry, such as projective duality, determinantal varieties, and their Chern classes.
Consider the polynomial optimization problem whose objective and constraints are all described by multivariate polynomials. Under some genericity assumptions, %% on these polynomials, we prove that the optimality conditions always hold on optimizers, and the coordinates of optimizers are algebraic functions of the coefficients of the input polynomials. We also give a general formula for the algebraic degree of the optimal coordinates. The derivation of the algebraic degree is equivalent to counting the number of all complex critical points. As special cases, we obtain the algebraic degrees of …
Since more than three decades, interior-point methods proved very useful for optimization, from linear over semidefinite to conic (and partly beyond non-convex) programming; despite the fact that already in the semidefinite case (even when strong duality holds) "hard" problems are known. We shade a light on a rather surprising restriction in the non-commutative world (of semidefinite programming), namely "commutative" paths and propose a new family of solvers that is able to use the full richness of "non-commutative" search directions: (primal) feasible-interior-point methods. Beside a detaile…
Farkas' lemma is a fundamental result from linear programming providing linear certificates for infeasibility of systems of linear inequalities. In semidefinite programming, such linear certificates only exist for strongly infeasible linear matrix inequalities. We provide nonlinear algebraic certificates for all infeasible linear matrix inequalities in the spirit of real algebraic geometry: A linear matrix inequality is infeasible if and only if -1 lies in the quadratic module associated to it. We also present a new exact duality theory for semidefinite programming, motivated by the real radic…
We consider semi-infinite linear programs with countably many constraints indexed by the natural numbers. When the constraint space is the vector space of all real valued sequences, we show the finite support (Haar) dual is equivalent to the algebraic Lagrangian dual of the linear program. This settles a question left open by Anderson and Nash [Linear programming in infinite dimensional spaces : theory and applications, Wiley 1987]. This result implies that if there is a duality gap between the primal linear program and its finite support dual, then this duality gap cannot be closed by conside…

Optimization problems with discrete-continuous decisions are traditionally modeled in algebraic form via (non)linear mixed-integer programming. A more systematic approach to modeling such systems is to use Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP), which extends the Disjunctive Programming paradigm proposed by Egon Balas to allow modeling systems from a logic-based level of abstraction that captures the fundamental rules governing such systems via algebraic constraints and logic. Although GDP provides a more general way of modeling systems, it warrants further generalization to encompass syste…
This is a survey article on real algebra and geometry, and in particular on its recent applications in optimization and convexity. We first introduce basic notions and results from the classical theory. We then explain how these relate to optimization, mostly via semidefinite programming. We introduce interesting geometric problems arising from the classification of feasible sets for semidefinite programming. We close with a perspective on the very active area of non-commutative real algebra and geometry.
Convex algebraic geometry concerns the interplay between optimization theory and real algebraic geometry. Its objects of study include convex semialgebraic sets that arise in semidefinite programming and from sums of squares. This article compares three notions of duality that are relevant in these contexts: duality of convex bodies, duality of projective varieties, and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions derived from Lagrange duality. We show that the optimal value of a polynomial program is an algebraic function whose minimal polynomial is expressed by the hypersurface projectively dual to the…
Hyperbolic programming is the problem of computing the infimum of a linear function when restricted to the hyperbolicity cone of a hyperbolic polynomial, a generalization of semidefinite programming. We propose an approach based on symbolic computation, relying on the multiplicity structure of the algebraic boundary of the cone, without the assumption of determinantal representability. This allows us to design exact algorithms able to certify the multiplicity of the solution and the optimal value of the linear function.
We compare algorithms for global optimization of polynomial functions in many variables. It is demonstrated that existing algebraic methods (Gröbner bases, resultants, homotopy methods) are dramatically outperformed by a relaxation technique, due to N.Z. Shor and the first author, which involves sums of squares and semidefinite programming. This opens up the possibility of using semidefinite programming relaxations arising from the Positivstellensatz for a wide range of computational problems in real algebraic geometry. This paper was presented at the Workshop on Algorithmic and Quantitative A…

In semidefinite programming, such linear certificates only exist for strongly infeasible linear matrix inequalities. We provide nonlinear algebraic certificates for all infeasible linear matrix inequalities in the spirit of real algebraic geometry. More precisely, we show that a linear matrix inequality is infeasible if and only if -1 lies in the quadratic module associated to it. We prove exponential degree bounds for the corresponding algebraic cert…
In this paper, we introduce a new class of nonsmooth convex functions called SOS-convex semialgebraic functions extending the recently proposed notion of SOS-convex polynomials. This class of nonsmooth convex functions covers many common nonsmooth functions arising in the applications such as the Euclidean norm, the maximum eigenvalue function and the least squares functions with $\ell_1$-regularization or elastic net regularization used in statistics and compressed sensing. We show that, under commonly used strict feasibility conditions, the optimal value and an optimal solution of SOS-convex…
This paper aims to find efficient solutions to a multi-objective optimization problem (MP) with convex polynomial data. To this end, a hybrid method, which allows us to transform problem (MP) into a scalar convex polynomial optimization problem (P$_z$) and does not destroy the properties of convexity, is considered. First, we show an existence result for efficient solutions to problem (MP) under some mild assumption. Then, for problem (P$_z$), we establish two kinds of representations of non-negativity of convex polynomials over convex semi-algebraic sets, and propose two kinds of finite conve…
We present a new approach to the design of D-optimal experiments with multivariate polynomial regressions on compact semi-algebraic design spaces. We apply the moment-sum-of-squares hierarchy of semidefinite programming problems to solve numerically and approximately the optimal design problem. The geometry of the design is recovered with semidefinite programming duality theory and the Christoffel polynomial.
Integer linear programming (ILP) encompasses a very important class of optimization problems that are of great interest to both academia and industry. Several algorithms are available that attempt to explore the solution space of this class efficiently, while requiring a reasonable compute time. However, although these algorithms have reached various degrees of success over the years, they still face considerable challenges when confronted with particularly hard problem instances, such as those of the MIPLIB 2010 library. In this work we propose a radically different non-algorithmic approach t…
