We establish a number of extensions of the well-poised Bailey lemma and elliptic well-poised Bailey lemma. As application we prove some new transformation formulae for basic and elliptic hypergeometric series, and embed some recent identities of Andrews, Berkovich and Spiridonov in a well-poised Bailey tree.

We give elementary derivations of some classical summation formulae for bilateral (basic) hypergeometric series. In particular, we apply Gauss' 2-F-1 summation and elementary series manipulations to give a simple proof of Dougall's 2-H-2 summation. Similarly, we apply Rogers' nonterminating 6-phi-5 summation and elementary series manipulations to give a simple proof of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation. Our method of proof extends M. Jackson's first elementary proof of Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation.

Our work requires multiple series extensions of Frenkel and Turaev's terminating, balanced and very-well-poised ${}_{10}V_9$ elliptic hypergeometric summation formula due to Rosengren, and Rosengren and Schlosser. This is a paper published in 2001 based on a talk given in 1999 celebrating the 50th anniversary of W. N. Bailey's influential q-series paper "Identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type". In no more than 13 pages I give a brief but reasonably complete overview of the mathematics related to Bailey's lemma.

We compare previously found finite-dimensional matrix and integral operator realizations of the Bailey lemma employing univariate elliptic hypergeometric functions. With the help of residue calculus we explicitly show how the integral Bailey lemma can be reduced to its matrix version. As a consequence, we demonstrate that the matrix Bailey lemma can be interpreted as a star-triangle relation, or as a Coxeter relation for a permutation group.
We announce a higher-dimensional generalization of the Bailey Transform, Bailey Lemma, and iterative ``Bailey chain'' concept in the setting of basic hypergeometric series very well-poised on unitary $A_{\ell}$ or symplectic $C_{\ell}$ groups. The classical case, corresponding to $A_1$ or equivalently $\roman U(2)$, contains an immense amount of the theory and application of one-variable basic hypergeometric series, including elegant proofs of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Schur identities. In particular, our program extends much of the classical work of Rogers, Bailey, Slater, Andrews, and Bressoud.

In this article, we derive some identities for multilateral basic hypergeometric series associated to the root system A_n. First, we apply Ismail's argument to an A_n q-binomial theorem of Milne and derive a new A_n generalization of Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation theorem.
