We generalise the theory of Cuntz-Krieger families and graph algebras to the class of finitely aligned $k$-graphs. This class contains in particular all row-finite $k$-graphs. The Cuntz-Krieger relations for non-row-finite $k$-graphs look significantly different from the usual ones, and this substantially complicates the analysis of the graph algebra. We prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem and a Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for the $C^*$-algebras of finitely aligned $k$-graphs.
We define the relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to finitely aligned higher-rank graphs. We prove versions of the gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem and the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras.
It is shown that no local periodicity is equivalent to the aperiodicity condition for arbitrary finitely-aligned k-graphs. This allows us to conclude that C*(Λ) is simple if and only if Λis cofinal and has no local periodicity.
We produce a complete descrption of the lattice of gauge-invariant ideals in $C^*(Λ)$ for a finitely aligned $k$-graph $Λ$. We provide a condition on $Λ$ under which every ideal is gauge-invariant. We give conditions on $Λ$ under which $C^*(Λ)$ satisfies the hypotheses of the Kirchberg-Phillips classification theorem.
Given a group cocycle on a finitely aligned left cancellative small category (LCSC) we investigate the associated skew product category and its Cuntz-Krieger algebra, which we describe as the crossed product of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of the original category by an induced coaction of the group. We use our results to study Cuntz-Krieger algebras arising from free actions of groups on finitely aligned LCSC's, and to construct coactions of groups on Exel-Pardo algebras. Finally we discuss the universal group of a small category and connectedness of skew product categories.
We introduce new formulations of aperiodicity and cofinality for finitely aligned higher-rank graphs Λ, and prove that C*(Λ) is simple if and only if Λis aperiodic and cofinal. The main advantage of our versions of aperiodicity and cofinality over existing ones is that ours are stated in terms of finite paths. To prove our main result, we first characterise each of aperiodicity and cofinality of Λin terms of the ideal structure of C*(Λ). In an appendix we show how our new cofinality condition simplifies in a number of special cases which have been treated previously in the literature; even in …
We consider Toeplitz and Cuntz-Krieger $C^*$-algebras associated with finitely aligned left cancellative small categories. We pay special attention to the case where such a category arises as the Zappa-Szép product of a category and a group linked by a one-cocycle. As our main application, we obtain a new approach to Exel-Pardo algebras in the case of row-finite graphs. We also present some other ways of constructing $C^*$-algebras from left cancellative small categories and discuss their relationship.
We introduce twisted relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to finitely aligned higher-rank graphs and give a comprehensive treatment of their fundamental structural properties. We establish versions of the usual uniqueness theorems and the classification of gauge-invariant ideals. We show that all twisted relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to finitely aligned higher-rank graphs are nuclear and satisfy the UCT, and that for twists that lift to real-valued cocycles, the K-theory of a twisted relative Cuntz-Krieger algebra is independent of the twist. In the final section, we identif…
To each finitely aligned higher-rank graph $Λ$ and each $\mathbb{T}$-valued 2-cocycle on $Λ$, we associate a family of twisted relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We show that each of these algebras carries a gauge action, and prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem. We describe an isomorphism between the fixed point algebras for the gauge actions on the twisted and untwisted relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We show that the quotient of a twisted relative Cuntz-Krieger algebra by a gauge-invariant ideal is canonically isomorphic to a twisted relative Cuntz-Krieger algebra associated to a subgr…
We give a complete classification (up to smooth homotopy) of finitely summable Fredholm representations (Fredholm modules) over higher rank groups and lattices. Our results are a direct consequence of work of Bader, Furman, Gelander and Monod on generalisations of Kazhdan's property T for locally compact groups.
We introduce a generalisation of Condition (K) to finitely separated graphs and show that it is equivalent to essential freeness of the associated partial action as well as the exchange property of any of the associated tame algebras. As a consequence, we can show that any tame separated graph algebra with the exchange property is separative.
The class of AD algebras of real rank zero is classified by an exact sequence of K-groups with coefficients, equipped with certain order structures. Such a sequence is always split, and one may ask why, then, the middle group is relevant for classification. The answer is that the splitting map can not always be chosen to respect the order structures involved. This may be rephrased in terms of the ideals of the C*-algebras in question. We prove that when the C*-algebra has only finitely many ideals, a splitting map respecting these always exists. Hence AD algebras of real rank zero with finitel…
We study isometric representations of product systems of correspondences over the semigroup $\mathbb{N}^k$ which are minimal dilations of finite dimensional, fully coisometric representations. We show the existence of a unique minimal cyclic coinvariant subspace for all such representations. The compression of the representation to this subspace is shown to be complete unitary invariant. For a certain class of graph algebras the nonself-adjoint \textsc{wot}-closed algebra generated by these representations is shown to contain the projection onto the minimal cyclic coinvariant subspace. This cl…
We investigate the question: when is a higher-rank graph C*-algebra approximately finite dimensional? We prove that the absence of an appropriate higher-rank analogue of a cycle is necessary. We show that it is not in general sufficient, but that it is sufficient for higher-rank graphs with finitely many vertices. We give a detailed description of the structure of the C*-algebra of a row-finite locally convex higher-rank graph with finitely many vertices. Our results are also sufficient to establish that if the C*-algebra of a higher-rank graph is AF, then its every ideal must be gauge-invaria…
We provide inverse semigroup and groupoid models for the Toeplitz and Cuntz-Krieger algebras of finitely aligned higher-rank graphs. Using these models, we prove a uniqueness theorem for the Cuntz-Krieger algebra.
We introduce P-graphs, which are generalisations of directed graphs in which paths have a degree in a semigroup P rather than a length in N. We focus on semigroups P arising as part of a quasi-lattice ordered group (G,P) in the sense of Nica, and on P-graphs which are finitely aligned in the sense of Raeburn and Sims. We show that each finitely aligned P-graph admits a C*-algebra C*_{min}(Lambda) which is co-universal for partial-isometric representations of Lambda which admit a coaction of G compatible with the P-valued length function. We also characterise when a homomorphism induced by the …
We define branching systems for finitely aligned higher-rank graphs. From these we construct concrete representations of higher-rank graph C*-algebras on Hilbert spaces. We prove a generalized Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for periodic single-vertex 2-graphs. We use this result to give a sufficient condition under which representations of periodic single-vertex 2-graph C*-algebras arising from branching systems are faithful.
We use the boundary-path space of a finitely-aligned k-graph Λto construct a compactly-aligned product system X, and we show that the graph algebra C^*(Λ) is isomorphic to the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra NO(X). In this setting, we introduce the notion of a crossed product by a semigroup of partial endomorphisms and partially-defined transfer operators by defining it to be NO(X). We then compare this crossed product with other definitions in the literature.
We show that group C*-algebras of finitely generated, nilpotent groups have finite nuclear dimension. It then follows, from a string of deep results, that the C*-algebra $A$ generated by an irreducible representation of such a group has decomposition rank at most 3. If, in addition, $A$ satisfies the universal coefficient theorem, another string of deep results shows it is classifiable by its Elliott invariant and is approximately subhomogeneous. We give a large class of irreducible representations of nilpotent groups (of arbitrarily large nilpotency class) that satisfy the universal coefficie…
We construct a locally compact Hausdorff topology on the path space of a finitely aligned $k$-graph $Λ$. We identify the boundary-path space $\partialΛ$ as the spectrum of a commutative $C^*$-subalgebra $D_Λ$ of $C^*(Λ)$. Then, using a construction similar to that of Farthing, we construct a finitely aligned $k$-graph $\wtΛ$ with no sources in which $Λ$ is embedded, and show that $\partialΛ$ is homeomorphic to a subset of $\partial\wtΛ$ . We show that when $Λ$ is row-finite, we can identify $C^*(Λ)$ with a full corner of $C^*(\wtΛ)$, and deduce that $D_Λ$ is isomorphic to a corner of $D_{\wtΛ}…
For a unital ring R, a Sylvester rank function is a numerical invariant which can be described in 3 equivalent ways: on finitely presented left R-modules, or on rectangular matrices over R, or on maps between finitely generated projective left R-modules. We extend each Sylvester rank function to all pairs of left R-modules $M_1\subseteq M_2$, and to all maps between left R-modules satisfying suitable properties including continuity and additivity. As an application, we show that for any epimorphism $R\rightarrow S$ of unital rings, the pull-back map from the set of Sylvester rank functions of …
We investigate the "theta-deformed spheres" C(S^{3}_{theta}) and C(S^{4}_{theta}), where theta is any real number. We show that all finitely-generated projective modules over C(S^{3}_{theta}) are free, and that C(S^{4}_{theta}) has the cancellation property. We classify and construct all finitely-generated projective modules over C(S^{4}_θ) up to isomorphism. An interesting feature is that if theta is irrational then there are nontrivial "rank-1" modules over C(S^{4}_θ). In that case, every finitely-generated projective module over C(S^{4}_θ) is a sum of a rank-1 module and a free module. If t…
We show that inductive limits of virtually nilpotent groups have strongly quasidiagonal C*-algebras, extending results of the first author on solvable virtually nilpotent groups. We use this result to show that the decomposition rank of the group C*-algebra of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group $G$ is bounded by $2\cdot h(G)!-1$, where $h(G)$ is the Hirsch length of $G.$ This extends and sharpens results of the first and third authors on finitely generated nilpotent groups. It then follows that if a C*-algebra generated by an irreducible representation of a virtually nilpotent grou…
We study homeomorphisms of a Cantor set with $k$ ($k < +\infty$) minimal invariant closed (but not open) subsets; we also study crossed product C*-algebras associated to these Cantor systems and their certain orbit-cut sub-C*-algebras. In the case that $k\geq 2$, the crossed product C*-algebra is stably finite, has stable rank 2, and has real rank zero if in addition $(X, σ)$ is aperiodic. The image of the index map is connected to certain directed graphs arising from the Bratteli-Vershik-Kakutani model of the Cantor system. Using this, it is shown that the ideal of the Bratteli diagram (of th…
