The affine group of a tree is the group of the isometries of a homogeneous tree that fix an end of its boundary. Consider a probability measure on this group and the associated random walk. The main goal of this paper is to determine the accumulation points of the potential kernel at the infinity. In particular we show that under suitable regularity hypotheses this kernel can be continuously extended to the tree boundary and we determine the limit measures.
This paper studies a class of growing systems of random walks on regular trees, known as \emph{frog models with geometric lifetime} in the literature. With the help of results from renewal theory, we derive new bounds for their critical parameters. Our approach also improve the bounds of the literature for the critical parameter of a percolation model on trees called \emph{cone percolation}
We show that the number of renewals up to time $t$ exhibits distributional fluctuations as $t\to\infty$ if the underlying lifetimes increase at an exponential rate in a distributional sense. This provides a probabilistic explanation for the asymptotics of insertion depth in random trees generated by a bit-comparison strategy from uniform input; we also obtain a representation for the resulting family of limit laws along subsequences. Our approach can also be used to obtain rates of convergence.
Let $(ξ_k,η_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ be independent identically distributed random vectors with arbitrarily dependent positive components. We call a (globally) perturbed random walk a random sequence $(T_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ defined by $T_k:=ξ_1+\cdots+ξ_{k-1}+η_k$ for $k\in\mathbb{N}$. Further, by an iterated perturbed random walk is meant the sequence of point processes defining the birth times of individuals in subsequent generations of a general branching process provided that the birth times of the first generation individuals are given by a perturbed random walk. For $j\in\mathbb{N}$ and $t\…
Consider distributional fixed point equations of the form R =d f(C_i, R_i, 1 <= i <= N), where f(.) is a possibly random real valued function, N in {0, 1, 2, 3,...} U {infty}, {C_i}_{i=1}^N are real valued random weights and {R_i}_{i >= 1} are iid copies of R, independent of (N, C_1,..., C_N); =d represents equality in distribution. Fixed point equations of this type are of utmost importance for solving many applied probability problems, ranging from average case analysis of algorithms to statistical physics. We develop an Implicit Renewal Theorem that enables the characterization of the power…
Let $(ξ_k,η_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ be independent identically distributed random vectors with arbitrarily dependent positive components. We call a (globally) perturbed random walk a random sequence $T:=(T_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ defined by $T_k:=ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_{k-1}+η_k$ for $k\in\mathbb{N}$. Consider a general branching process generated by $T$ and denote by $N_j(t)$ the number of the $j$th generation individuals with birth times $\leq t$. We treat early generations, that is, fixed generations $j$ which do not depend on $t$. In this setting we prove counterparts for $\mathbb{E}N_j$ of the Blackwell …
We investigate characteristics of random split trees introduced by Devroye; split trees include for example binary search trees, $m$-ary search trees, quadtrees, median of $(2k+1)$-trees, simplex trees, tries and digital search trees. More precisely: We introduce the use of renewal theory in the studies of split trees, and use this theory to prove several results about split trees. A split tree of cardinality $n$ is constructed by distributing $n$ "balls" (which often represent "key numbers") in a subset of vertices of an infinite tree. One of our main results is to give a relation between the…
Based on a simple object, an i.i.d. sequence of positive integer-valued random variables, $\{a_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{Z}}$, we introduce and study two random structures and their connections. First, a population dynamics, in which each individual is born at time $n$ and dies at time $n+a_n$. This dynamics is that of a D/GI/$\infty$ queue, with arrivals at integer times and service times given by $\{a_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{Z}}$. Second, the directed random graph $T^f$ on $\mathbb{Z}$ generated by the random map $f(n)=n+a_n$. Only assuming $\mathbb{E}[a_0]<\infty$ and $\mathbb{P}[a_0=1]>0$, we show that,…
We extend Goldie's (1991) Implicit Renewal Theorem to enable the analysis of recursions on weighted branching trees. We illustrate the developed method by deriving the power tail asymptotics of the distributions of the solutions R to: R =_D sum_{i=1}^N C_i R_i + Q, R =_D max(max_{i=1}^N C_i R_i, Q), and similar recursions, where (Q, N, C_1,..., C_N) is a nonnegative random vector with N in {0, 1, 2, 3, ..., infinity}, and {R_i}_{i >= 1} are iid copies of R, independent of (Q, N, C_1,..., C_N); =_D denotes the equality in distribution.
This paper belongs to a series of papers aiming to investigate scaling limits of Crump-Mode-Jagers (CMJ) trees. In the previous two papers we identified general conditions under which CMJ trees belong to the universality class of Galton-Watson and Bellman-Harris processes. In this paper we identify general conditions for CMJ trees to belong to the universality class of binary, homogeneous CMJ trees. These conditions state that the offspring process should 'look like' a renewal process, and also that it should not accumulate too many atoms near the origin. We show in particular that any renewal…
We consider Bernoulli bond percolation on oriented regular trees, where besides the usual short bonds, all bonds of a certain length are added. Independently, short bonds are open with probability $p$ and long bonds are open with probability $q$. We study properties of the critical curve which delimits the set of pairs $(p,q)$ for which there are almost surely no infinite paths. We also show that this curve decreases with respect to the length of the long bonds.

In this paper, several properties of plain-oriented recursive trees (PORTs) are uncovered. Specifically, we investigate the degree profile of a PORT by determining the exact probability mass function of the degree of a node with a fixed label. We compute the expectation and variance of the degree variable via a \Polya\ urn approach. In addition, we look into a topological index, the Zagreb index, of this class of trees. We calculate the exact first two moments of the Zagreb index by using recurrence methods. We also provide several evidence in favor of our conjecture that the Zagreb index of P…
We consider an inhomogeneous oriented percolation model introduced by de Lima, Rolla and Valesin. In this model, the underlying graph is an oriented rooted tree in which each vertex points to each of its $d$ children with `short' edges, and in addition, each vertex points to each of its $d^k$ descendant at a fixed distance $k$ with `long' edges. A bond percolation process is then considered on this graph, with the prescription that independently, short edges are open with probability $p$ and long edges are open with probability $q$. We study the behavior of the critical curve $q_c(p)$: we find…
Consider the d-dimensional lattice Z^d where each vertex is ``open'' or ``closed'' with probability p or 1-p, respectively. An open vertex v is connected by an edge to the closest open vertex w such that the dth co-ordinates of v and w satisfy w(d)=v(d)-1. In case of nonuniqueness of such a vertex w, we choose any one of the closest vertices with equal probability and independently of the other random mechanisms. It is shown that this random graph is a tree almost surely for d=2 and 3 and it is an infinite collection of distinct trees for d\geq4. In addition, for any dimension, we show that th…
Recently, Holmes and Perkins identified conditions which ensure that for a class of critical lattice models the scaling limit of the range is the range of super-Brownian motion. One of their conditions is an estimate on a spatial moment of order higher than four, which they verified for the sixth moment for spread-out lattice trees in dimensions $d>8$. Chen and Sakai have proved the required moment estimate for spread-out critical oriented percolation in dimensions $d+1>4+1$. We prove estimates on all moments for the spread-out critical contact process in dimensions $d>4$, which in particular …
We consider the random Markov matrix obtained by assigning i.i.d. non-negative weights to each edge of the complete oriented graph. In this study, the weights have unbounded first moment and belong to the domain of attraction of an alpha-stable law. We prove that as the dimension tends to infinity, the empirical measure of the singular values tends to a probability measure which depends only on alpha, characterized as the expected value of the spectral measure at the root of a weighted random tree. The latter is a generalized two-stage version of the Poisson weighted infinite tree (PWIT) intro…
