We prove a theorem which implies a quantum (multiplicative) analogue of the Horn conjecture, and also of the saturation conjecture. We obtain transversality statements for quantum schubert calculus in any characteristic and also determine the smallest power of q in an arbitrary (small quantum) product of Schubert varieties in a Grassmannian.
We provide a geometric proof of the Schubert calculus interpretation of the Horn conjecture, and show how the saturation conjecture follows from it. The geometric proof gives a strengthening of Horn and saturation conjectures. We also establish transversality theorems for Schubert calculus in non-zero characteristic. Some parts of the version posted in Nov 2002 (concerning explicit invariants constructed from Schubert calculus) have been removed from this version. They have appeared separately in IMRN 2004, no. 69, pages 3709--3721 " Invariant theory of GL(n) and Intersection theory of Grassma…
We give a simplification of Belkale's geometric proof of the Horn conjecture. Our approach uses the geometry of two-step flag manifolds to explain the occurrence of the Horn inequalities in a very straightforward way. The arguments for both necessity and sufficiency of the Horn inequalities are fairly conceptual when viewed in this framework. We provide examples to illustrate the method of proof.
Stretching the parameters of a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient of value 2 by a factor of n results in a coefficient of value n+1. We give a geometric proof of a generalization for representations of quivers.
We relate the n! conjecture (by Garsia and Haiman) to the geometry of principal nilpotent pairs, and state a conjecture generalizing the n! conjecture to arbitrary semisimple algebraic groups. We also show, using Borel's fixed point theorem, how to reduce the n! conjecture to staircase partitions. Finally we study the interplay between characteristic p and the n! conjecture for box partitions.
Let G be a complex connected reductive group. The PRV conjecture, which was proved independently by S. Kumar and O. Mathieu in 1989, gives explicit irreducible submodules of the tensor product of two irreducible G-modules. This paper has three aims. First, we simplify the proof of the PRV conjecture, then we generalize it to other branching problems. Finally, we find other irreducible components of the tensor product of two irreducible G-modules that appear for "the same reason" as the PRV ones.
Let $G\subset\hat{G}$ be two complex connected reductive groups. We deals with the hard problem of finding sub-$G$-modules of a given irreducible $\hat{G}$-module. In the case where $G$ is diagonally embedded in $\hat{G}=G\times G$, S. Kumar and O. Mathieu found some of them, proving the PRV conjecture. Recently, the authors generalized the PRV conjecture on the one hand to the case where $\hat{G}/G$ is spherical of minimal rank, and on the other hand giving more sub-$G$-modules in the classical case $G\subset G\times G$. In this paper, these two recent generalizations are combined in a same m…
The goal of this paper is to give a simple proof of Deligne's conjecture (proven by Fujiwara) and to generalize it to the situation appearing in our joint project with David Kazhdan on the global Langlands correspondence over function fields. Our proof holds in the realm of ordinary algebraic geometry and does not use rigid geometry.
Combining recent results on noetherianity of twisted commutative algebras by Draisma and the resolution of Stillman's conjecture by Ananyan-Hochster, we prove a broad generalization of Stillman's conjecture. Our theorem yields an array of boundedness results in commutative algebra that only depend on the degrees of the generators of an ideal, and not the number of variables in the ambient polynomial ring.
Studying two point branched Galois covers of the projective line we prove the Inertia Conjecture for the Alternating groups $A_{p+1}$, $A_{p+3}$, $A_{p+4}$ for any odd prime $p \equiv 2 \pmod{3}$ and for the group $A_{p+5}$ when additionally $4 \nmid (p+1)$ and $p \geq 17$. We obtain a generalization of a patching result by Raynaud which reduces these proofs to showing the realizations of the étale Galois covers of the affine line with a fewer candidates for the inertia groups above $\infty$. We also pose a general question motivated by the Inertia Conjecture and obtain some affirmative result…
Let X be a complex Fano manifold of dimension n. Let s(X) be the sum of l(R)-1 for all the extremal rays of X, the edges of the cone NE(X) of curves of X, where l(R) denotes the minimum of (-K_X \cdot C) for all rational curves C whose class [C] belongs to R. We show that s(X)\leq n if n\leq 4. And for n\leq 4, we completely classify the case the equality holds. This is a refinement of the Mukai conjecture on Fano fourfolds.
A conjecture of Mumford predicts a complete set of relations between the generators of the cohomology ring of the moduli space of rank 2 semi-stable sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant on a smooth, projective curve of genus at least 2. The conjecture was proven by Kirwan. In this article, we generalize the conjecture to the case when the underlying curve is irreducible, nodal. In fact, we show that these relations (in the nodal curve case) arise naturally as degeneration of the Mumford relations shown by Kirwan in the smooth curve case. As a byproduct, we compute the Hodge-Poincare polyn…
The Oort conjecture (now a theorem of Obus-Wewers and Pop) states that if k is an algebraically closed field of characteristic p, then any cyclic branched cover of smooth projective k-curves lifts to characteristic zero. This is equivalent to the local Oort conjecture, which states that all cyclic extensions of k[[t]] lift to characteristic zero. We generalize the local Oort conjecture to the case of Galois extensions with cyclic p-Sylow subgroups, reduce the conjecture to a pure characteristic p statement, and prove it in several cases. In particular, we show that D_9 is a so-called local Oor…
We formulate a generalization of Vojta's conjecture in terms of log pairs and variants of multiplier ideals. In this generalization, a variety is allowed to have singularities. It turns out that the generalized conjecture for a log pair is equivalent to the original conjecture applied to a log resolution of the pair. A special case of the generalized conjecture can be interpreted as representing a general phenomenon that there tend to exist more rational points near singular points than near smooth points. The same phenomenon is also observed in relation between greatest common divisors of int…
We prove the Noether-Lefschetz conjecture on the moduli space of quasi-polarized K3 surfaces. This is deduced as a particular case of a general theorem that states that low degree cohomology classes of arithmetic manifolds of orthogonal type are dual to the classes of special cycles, i.e. sub-arithmetic manifolds of the same type. For compact manifolds this was proved in \cite{BMM11}, here we extend the results of \cite{BMM11} to non-compact manifolds. This allows us to apply our results to the moduli spaces of quasi-polarized K3 surfaces.
The Shafarevich conjecture for K3 surfaces asserts the finiteness of isomorphism classes of K3 surfaces over a fixed number field admitting good reduction away from a fixed finite set of finite places. André proved this conjecture for polarized K3 surfaces of fixed degree, and recently She proved it for polarized K3 surfaces of unspecified degree. In this paper, we prove a certain generalization of their results, which is stated by the unramifiedness of l-adic étale cohomology groups for K3 surfaces over finitely generated fields of characteristic 0. As a corollary, we get the original Shafare…
Let $G$ be a group and let $k$ be a field. Kaplansky's direct finiteness conjecture states that every one-sided unit of the group ring $k[G]$ must be a two-sided unit. In this paper, we establish a geometric direct finiteness theorem for endomorphisms of symbolic algebraic varieties. Whenever $G$ is a sofic group or more generally a surjunctive group, our result implies a generalization of Kaplansky's direct finiteness conjecture for the near ring $R(k, G)$ which is $k[X_g\colon g \in G]$ as a group and which contains naturally $k[G]$ as the subring of homogeneous polynomials of degree one. We…
In this paper, we formulate and present ample evidence towards the conjecture that the partition function (i.e. the exponential of the generating series of intersection numbers with monomials in psi classes) of the Pixton class on the moduli space of stable curves is the topological tau function of the noncommutative KdV hierarchy, which we introduced in a previous work. The specialization of this conjecture to the top degree part of Pixton's class states that the partition function of the double ramification cycle is the tau function of the dispersionless limit of this hierarchy. In fact, we …
