The object of this work is to present the status of art of an open problem: to provide an analogue for Shimura curves of the Ihara's lemma \cite{Ihara73} which holds for modular curves. In the present paper, we generalize the celebrated classical lemma of Birch and Heegner on quadratic twists of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove the existence of explicit infinite families of quadratic twists with analytic ranks $0$ and $1$ for a large class of elliptic curves, and use Heegner points to explicitly construct rational points of infinite order on the twists of rank $1$. In this article we completely determine the possible dimensions of integral points and holomorphic curves on the complement of a union of hyperplanes in projective space. Our main theorems generalize a result of Evertse and Gyory, who determined when all sets of integral points (over all number fields) on the complement of a union of hyperplanes are finite, and a result of Ru, who determined when all holomorphic maps to the complement of a union of hyperplanes are constant. The main tools used are the S-unit lemma and its analytic analogue, Borel's lemma.

By adapting the work of Kudla and Millson we obtain a lifting of cuspidal cohomology classes for the symmetric space associated to GO(V) for an indefinite rational quadratic space V of even dimension to holomorphic Siegel modular forms on GSp_n(A). We generalize the lemmas of Thomas Kretschmer to arbitrary number fields, and apply them with a 2-descent argument to obtain bounds for families of elliptic curves over certain imaginary quadratic number fields with class number 1. One such family occurs in the congruent number problem. We consider the congruent number problem over these quadratic number fields, and subject to the finiteness of Sha, we show that there are infinitely many numbers that are not congruent over Q but become congruent over $Q(ζ_3)$.
