We show that a lower bound for covariance of $\min(X_1,X_2)$ and $\max(X_1,X_2)$ is $\cov{X_1}{X_2}$ and an upper bound for variance of \\ $\min(X_2,\max(X,X_1))$ is $\var{X} + \var{X_1} +\var{X_2}$ generalizing previous results. We also characterize the cases where these bounds are sharp.
This work is concerned with finite range bounds on the variance of individual eigenvalues of random covariance matrices, both in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. In a preceding paper, the author established analogous results for Wigner matrices and stated the results for covariance matrices. They are proved in the present paper. Relying on the LUE example, which needs to be investigated first, the main bounds are extended to complex covariance matrices by means of the Tao, Vu and Wang Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Pillai and Yin. The case of real covariance ma…
We consider a measure of dependence for symmetric $α$-stable random vectors, which was introduced by the author in 1976. We demonstrate that this measure of dependence can be extended for much more broad class of random vectors (up to regularly varying vectors in separable Banach spaces). This measure is applied for linear random processes and fields with heavy-tailed innovations, for some stable processes, and these applications show that this dependence measure, named as $α$-covariance is a good substitute for the usual covariance. Also we discuss a problem of defining long, short, and negat…
This work is concerned with finite range bounds on the variance of individual eigenvalues of Wigner random matrices, in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum, as well as for some intermediate eigenvalues. Relying on the GUE example, which needs to be investigated first, the main bounds are extended to families of Hermitian Wigner matrices by means of the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin. The case of real Wigner matrices is obtained from interlacing formulas. As an application, bounds on the expected 2-Wasserstein distance between the empir…
In the paper we continue to investigate measures of dependence for random variables with infinite variance. The asymptotic of spectral covariance $ρ(X_{(0,0)}, X_{(k_1,k_2)})$ for linear random field $X_{k,l}=\sum_{i,j=0}^\infty c_{i,j}ε_{k-i, l-j}, \ (k, l)\in \mathbb{Z}^2,$ with special form of filter $\{c_{i,j}\}$ and with innovations $\{ ε_{i, j}\}$ having infinite second moment is investigated. Different behavior of $ρ(X_{(0,0)}, X_{(k_1,k_2)})$ is obtained in the cases $n\to \infty, \ m\to \infty$ and $n\to \infty, \ m\to -\infty$, the latter case being much more complicated.
In this paper, we present a minimal formalism for Stein operators which leads to different probabilistic representations of solutions to Stein equations. These in turn provide a wide family of Stein-Covariance identities which we put to use for revisiting the very classical topic of bounding the variance of functionals of random variables. Applying the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality yields first order upper and lower Klaassen-type variance bounds. A probabilistic representation of Lagrange's identity (i.e. Cauchy-Schwarz with remainder) leads to Papathanasiou-type variance expansions of arbitrary o…
In this paper we present an enhancement of the regression-based variance reduction approaches recently proposed in Belomestny et al. This enhancement is based on a truncation of the control variate and allows for a significant reduction of the computing time, while the complexity stays of the same order. The performances of the proposed truncated algorithms are illustrated by a numerical example.
This work sheds some light on the relationship between a distribution's standard deviation and its range, a topic that has been discussed extensively in the literature. While many previous studies have proposed inequalities or relationships that depend on the shape of the population distribution, the approach here is built on a family of bounded probability distributions based on skewing functions. We offer closed-form expressions for its moments and the asymptotic behavior as the support's semi-range tends to zero and $\infty$. We also establish an inequality in which the well-known Popoviciu…
We develop a theory to measure the variance and covariance of probability distributions defined on the nodes of a graph, which takes into account the distance between nodes. Our approach generalizes the usual (co)variance to the setting of weighted graphs and retains many of its intuitive and desired properties. Interestingly, we find that a number of famous concepts in graph theory and network science can be reinterpreted in this setting as variances and covariances of particular distributions. As a particular application, we define the maximum variance problem on graphs with respect to the e…
We study the $k$-largest eigenvalues of heavy-tailed sample covariance matrices of the form $\bX\bX^\T$ in an asymptotic framework, where the dimension of the data and the sample size tend to infinity. To this end, we assume that the rows of $\bX$ are given by independent copies of some stationary process with regularly varying marginals with index $α\in(0,2)$ satisfying large deviation and mixing conditions. We apply these general results to stochastic volatility and GARCH processes.
This paper studies a robust continuous-time Markowitz portfolio selection pro\-blem where the model uncertainty carries on the covariance matrix of multiple risky assets. This problem is formulated into a min-max mean-variance problem over a set of non-dominated probability measures that is solved by a McKean-Vlasov dynamic programming approach, which allows us to characterize the solution in terms of a Bellman-Isaacs equation in the Wasserstein space of probability measures. We provide explicit solutions for the optimal robust portfolio strategies and illustrate our results in the case of unc…
Distributional approximations of (bi--) linear functions of sample variance-covariance matrices play a critical role to analyze vector time series, as they are needed for various purposes, especially to draw inference on the dependence structure in terms of second moments and to analyze projections onto lower dimensional spaces as those generated by principal components. This particularly applies to the high-dimensional case, where the dimension $d$ is allowed to grow with the sample size $n$ and may even be larger than $n$. We establish large-sample approximations for such bilinear forms rela…
In this paper we derive sharp lower and upper bounds for the covariance of two bounded random variables when knowledge about their expected values, variances or both is available. When only the expected values are known, our result can be viewed as an extension of the Bhatia-Davis Inequality for variances. We also provide a number of different ways to standardize covariance. For a binary pair random variables, one of these standardized measures of covariation agrees with a frequently used measure of dependence between genetic variants.
We establish a large deviation theorem for the empirical spectral distribution of random covariance matrices whose entries are independent random variables with mean 0, variance 1 and having controlled forth moments. Some new properties of Laguerre polynomials are also given.
We consider two classical ensembles of the random matrix theory: the Wigner matrices and sample covariance matrices, and prove Central Limit Theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics under rather weak (comparing with results known before) conditions on the number of derivatives of the test functions and also on the number of the entries moments. Moreover, we develop a universal method which allows one to obtain automatically the bounds for the variance of differentiable test functions, if there is a bound for the variance of the trace of the resolvent of random matrix. The method is applicable …
We study principal components analyses in multivariate random and mixed effects linear models, assuming a spherical-plus-spikes structure for the covariance matrix of each random effect. We characterize the behavior of outlier sample eigenvalues and eigenvectors of MANOVA variance components estimators in such models under a high-dimensional asymptotic regime. Our results show that an aliasing phenomenon may occur in high dimensions, in which eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the MANOVA estimate for one variance component may be influenced by the other components. We propose an alternative proce…
The covariance matrix of random variables $X_1,\dots,X_n$ is said to have an intraclass covariance structure if the variances of all the $X_i$'s are the same and all the pairwise covariances of the $X_i$'s are the same. We provide a possibly surprising characterization of such covariance matrices in the case when the $X_i$'s are symmetric Bernoulli random variables.
For arbitrary two probability measures on real d-space with given means and variances (covariance matrices), we provide lower bounds for their total variation distance. In the one-dimensional case, a tight bound is given.
