We determine the central simple algebras D over a functionfield K of trancendence degree two which admit a model of smooth Cayley-Hamilton algebras. This happens if and only if there is a smooth model S of K such that the ramification divisor of a maximal S-order in D is a disjoint union of smooth curves. Further, we prove that the Brauer-Severi fibration of smooth models which are in addition maximal orders is a flat morphism and determine the number of irreducible components of the fibers.
We study properties of graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over an N-graded locally finite, Auslander Gorenstein, and Cohen-Macaulay algebra of dimension two. As a consequence, we extend a part of McKay correspondence in dimension two to a more general setting.
Tilting objects play a key role in the study of triangulated categories. A famous result due to Iyama and Takahashi asserts that the stable categories of graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over quotient singularities have tilting objects. This paper proves a noncommutative generalization of Iyama and Takahashi's theorem using noncommutative algebraic geometry. Namely, if $S$ is a noetherian AS-regular Koszul algebra and $G$ is a finite group acting on $S$ such that $S^G$ is a "Gorenstein isolated singularity", then the stable category ${\underline {\operatorname {CM}}}^{\Bbb Z}(S^G)$ of gra…
We make an attempt to develop "noncommutative algebraic geometry" in which noncommutative affine schemes are in one-to-one correspondence with associative algebras. In the first part we discuss various aspects of smoothness in affine noncommutative algebraic geometry. The main example for us is the noncommutative affine space. The algebra of functions on this space is free finitely generated algebra. We propose a general correspondence principle which allows us to give definitions of various differential-geometric structures in the noncommutative setting. In the second part we propose a defini…
A major current goal of noncommutative geometry is the classification of noncommutative projective surfaces. The generic case is to understand algebras birational to the Sklyanin algebra. In this work we complete a considerable component of this problem. Let S denote the 3-dimensional Sklyanin algebra over an algebraically closed field, and assume that S is not a finite module over its centre. In earlier work Rogalski, Sierra and Stafford classified the maximal orders inside the 3-Veronese of S. We complete and extend their work and classify all maximal orders inside S. As in Rogalski, Sierra …
Raf Bocklandt and the author have proved in math.AG/0010030 that certain quotient varieties of representations of deformed preprojective algebras are coadjoint orbits for the necklace Lie algebra of the corresponding quiver. A conjectural ringtheoretical explanation of these results was given in terms of noncommutative smoothness in the sense of C. Procesi. In this paper we prove these conjectures. The main tool in the proof is the etale local description due to W. Crawley-Boevey in math.AG/0105247. Along the way we determine the smooth locus of the so called Marsden-Weinstein reductions for q…
In Kapranov, M. {\it Noncommutative geometry based on commutator expansions,} J. reine angew. Math {\bf 505} (1998) 73-118, a theory of noncommutative algebraic varieties was proposed. Here we prove a structure theorem for the noncommutative coordinate rings of affine open subsets of such of those varieties which are smooth (Theorem 3.4). The theorem describes the local ring of a point as a truncation of a quantization of the enveloping Poisson algebra of a smooth commutative local algebra. An explicit descripition of this quantization is given in Theorem 2.5. A description of the $A$- module …
This paper develops the tools of formal algebraic geometry in the setting of noncommutative manifolds, roughly ringed spaces locally modeled on the free associative algebra. We define a notion of noncommutative coordinate system, which is a principal bundle for an appropriate group of local coordinate changes. These bundles are shown to carry a natural flat connection with properties analogous to the classical Gelfand-Kazhdan structure. Every noncommutative manifold has an underlying smooth variety given by abelianization. A basic question is existence and uniqueness of noncommutative thickeni…
A major current goal of noncommutative geometry is the classification of noncommutative projective surfaces. The generic case is to understand algebras birational to the Sklyanin algebra. In this thesis we complete a considerable component of this problem. Let $S$ denote the 3-dimensional Sklyanin algebra over an algebraically closed field, and assume that $S$ is not a finite module over its centre. In earlier work Rogalski, Sierra and Stafford classified the maximal orders inside the 3-Veronese $S^{(3)}$ of $S$. We complete and extend their work and classify all maximal orders inside $S$. As …
We implement a noncommutative analogue of the well-known commutative cyclic covering trick and implement it to explicitly construct a vast collection of numerically Calabi-Yau orders, noncommutative analogues of surfaces of Kodaira dimension 0. We construct maximal orders, noncommutative analogues of normal schemes, on rational surfaces and ruled surfaces. We also use Ogg-Shafarevich theory to construct Azumaya algebras and, more generally, maximal orders on elliptically fibred surfaces.
We survey results on factorizations of non zero-divisors into atoms (irreducible elements) in noncommutative rings. The point of view in this survey is motivated by the commutative theory of non-unique factorizations. Topics covered include unique factorization up to order and similarity, 2-firs, and modular LCM domains, as well as UFRs and UFDs in the sense of Chatters and Jordan and generalizations thereof. We recall arithmetical invariants for the study of non-unique factorizations, and give transfer results for arithmetical invariants in matrix rings, rings of triangular matrices, and clas…
We present a faster method to determine all singularities of quiver moduli spaces up to smooth equivalence. We show that every quiver controls a large family of noncommutative compact manifolds.
One of the major open problems in noncommutative algebraic geometry is the classification of noncommutative projective surfaces (or, slightly more generally, of noetherian connected graded domains of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension 3). Earlier work of the authors classified the connected graded noetherian subalgebras of Sklyanin algebras using a noncommutative analogue of blowing up. In order to understand other algebras birational to a Sklyanin algebra, one also needs a notion of blowing down. This is achieved in this paper, where we give a noncommutative analogue of Castelnuovo's classic theorem …
Let $E$ be a Koszul Frobenius algebra. A Clifford deformation of $E$ is a finite dimensional $\mathbb Z_2$-graded algebra $E(θ)$, which corresponds to a noncommutative quadric hypersurface $E^!/(z)$, for some central regular element $z\in E^!_2$. It turns out that the bounded derived category $D^b(\text{gr}_{\mathbb Z_2}E(θ))$ is equivalent to the stable category of the maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over $E^!/(z)$ provided that $E^!$ is noetherian. As a consequence, $E^!/(z)$ is a noncommutative isolated singularity if and only if the corresponding Clifford deformation $E(θ)$ is a semisimple …
Divided into three parts, the first marks out enormous geometric issues with the notion of quasi-freenss of an algebra and seeks to replace this notion of formal smoothness with an approximation by means of a minimal unital commutative algebra's smoothness. The second part of this text is then, devoted to the approximating of properties of nc. schemes through the properties of two uniquely determined (classical) schemes estimating the nc. scheme in question in a maximal way from the inside and through the minimal scheme approximating the nc. scheme in question from the outside. The very brief …
We study a class of noncommutative surfaces and their higher dimensional analogues which provide answers to several open questions in noncommutative projective geometry. Specifically, we give the first known graded algebras which are noetherian but not strongly noetherian, answering a question of Artin, Small, and Zhang. In addition, these examples are maximal orders and satisfy the $χ_1$ condition but not $χ_i$ for $i \geq 2$, answering a questions of Stafford and Zhang and a question of Stafford and Van den Bergh. Finally, we show that these algebras have finite cohomological dimension.
Generalised quantum determinantal rings are the analogue in quantum matrices of Schubert varieties. Maximal orders are the noncommutative version of integrally closed rings. In this paper, we show that generalised quantum determinantal rings are maximal orders. The cornerstone of the proof is a description of generalised quantum determinantal rings, up to a localisation, as skew polynomial extensions.
We show that faithfully flat smooth extensions are reduced flat, and therefore, fit into the Jacobi-Zariski exact sequence in Hochschild homology and cyclic (co)homology even when the algebras are noncommutative or infinite dimensional. We observe that such extensions correspond to étale maps of affine schemes, and we propose a definition for generic noncommutative fibrations using distributive laws and homological properties of the induction and restriction functors. Then we show that Galois fibrations do produce the right exact sequence in homology. We then demonstrate the versatility of our…
In the ongoing programme to classify noncommutative projective surfaces (connected graded noetherian domains of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension three) a natural question is to determine the minimal models within any birational class. In this paper we show that the generic noncommutative projective plane (corresponding to the three dimensional Sklyanin algebra R) as well as noncommutative analogues of P^1 x P^1 and of the Hirzebruch surface F_2 (arising from Van den Bergh's quadrics R) satisfy very strong minimality conditions. Translated into an algebraic question, where one is interested in a maxi…
Let R be a noetherian ring which is a finite module over its centre Z(R). This paper studies the consequences for R of the hypothesis that it is a maximal Cohen Macaulay Z(R)-module. Old results are reviewed and a number of new results are proved. The additional hypothesis of homological grade symmetry is proposed as the appropriate extra lever needed to extend the classical commutative homological hierarchy to this setting, and results are given offering evidence in support of this proposal.
In this paper we show that the $K_0$ groups of noncommutative $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ are $\mathbb{Z}$ for $\forall n\in\mathbb{N}^*$ and make an approach to the calculation of the smooth case, which will bring many new sequence problems relating to binomial numbers.
