Consider the algebra Q<<x_1,x_2,...>> of formal power series in countably many noncommuting variables over the rationals. The subalgebra Pi(x_1,x_2,...) of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables consists of all elements invariant under permutation of the variables and of bounded degree. We develop a theory of such functions analogous to the ordinary theory of symmetric functions. In particular, we define analogs of the monomial, power sum, elementary, complete homogeneous, and Schur symmetric functions as will as investigating their properties.
In 1995 Stanley introduced a generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$, called the chromatic symmetric function, $X_G$, which was generalized to noncommuting variables, $Y_G$, by Gebhard-Sagan in 2001. Recently there has been a renaissance in the study of $X_G$, in particular in classifying when $X_G$ is a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric or Schur functions. We extend this study from $X_G$ to $Y_G$, including establishing the multiplicativity of $Y_G$, and showing $Y_G$ satisfies the $k$-deletion property. Moreover, we completely classify when $Y_G$ is a posi…
Let $Π_n$ denote the set of all set partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. We consider two subsets of $Π_n$, one connected to rook theory and one associated with symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Let $\cE_n\sbeΠ_n$ be the subset of all partitions corresponding to an extendable rook (placement) on the upper-triangular board, $\cT_{n-1}$. Given $π\inΠ_m$ and $\si\inΠ_n$, define their {\it slash product\/} to be $π|\si=π\cup(\si+m)\inΠ_{m+n}$ where $\si+m$ is the partition obtained by adding $m$ to every element of every block of $\si$. Call $τ$ {\it atomic\/} if it can not be written as …
We identify a collection of primitive elements generating the Hopf algebra NCSym of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables and give a combinatorial formula for the antipode.
We study the ring generated over a field of characteristic 0 by noncommuting indeterminates {x_1,x_2,...,x_n} subject only to the relations x_iσ_k=σ_k x_i, for i,k=1,2,...,n, and their consequences, where σ_k =σ_k(x_1,x_2,...,x_n) is the k-th elementary polynomial in the noncommuting variables x_i. We assume n\geq 3 throughout.
In 2004 Rosas and Sagan asked whether there was a way to define a basis in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, NCSym, having properties analogous to the classical Schur functions. This was because they had constructed a partial such set that was not a basis. We answer their question by defining Schur functions in noncommuting variables using a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant. Our Schur functions in NCSym map to classical Schur functions under commutation, and a subset of them indexed by set partitions forms a basis for NCSym. Amongst other prop…
We introduce a natural Hopf algebra structure on the space of noncommutative symmetric functions which was recently studied as a vector space by Rosas and Sagan. The bases for this algebra are indexed by set partitions. We show that there exist a natural inclusion of the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions indexed by compositions in this larger space. We also consider this algebra as a subspace of noncommutative polynomials and use it to understand the structure of the spaces of harmonics and coinvariants with respect to this collection of noncommutative polynomials.
We define a new type of vertex coloring which generalizes vertex coloring in graphs, hypergraphs, and simplicial complexes. This coloring also generalizes oriented coloring, acyclic coloring, and star coloring. There is an associated symmetric function in noncommuting variables for which we give a deletion-contraction formula. In the case of graphs this symmetric function in noncommuting variables agrees with the chromatic symmetric function in noncommuting variables of Gebhard and Sagan. Our vertex coloring is a special case of the scheduling problems defined by Breuer and Klivans. We show ho…
We identify two seemingly disparate structures: supercharacters, a useful way of doing Fourier analysis on the group of unipotent uppertriangular matrices with coefficients in a finite field, and the ring of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Each is a Hopf algebra and the two are isomorphic as such. This allows developments in each to be transferred. The identification suggests a rich class of examples for the emerging field of combinatorial Hopf algebras.
The cd-index is an invariant of Eulerian posets expressed as a polynomial in noncommuting variables c and d. It determines another invariant, the h-polynomial. In this paper, we study the relative setting, that of subdivisions of posets. We introduce the mixed cd-index, an invariant of strong formal subdivisions of posets, which determines the mixed h-polynomial introduced by the second author with Stapledon. The mixed cd-index is a polynomial in noncommuting variables c',d',c,d, and e and is defined in terms of the local cd-index of Karu. Here, use is made of the decomposition theorem for the…
Stanley associated with a graph G a symmetric function X_G which reduces to G's chromatic polynomial under a certain specialization of variables. He then proved various theorems generalizing results about the chromatic polynomial, as well as new ones that cannot be interpreted at that level. Unfortunately, X_G does not satisfy a Deletion-Contraction Law which makes it difficult to apply induction. We introduce a symmetric function in noncommuting variables which does have such a law and specializes to X_G when the variables are allowed to commute. This permits us to further generalize some of …
The supercharacter theory of algebra groups gave us a representation theoretic realization of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. The underlying representation theoretic framework comes equipped with two canonical bases, one of which was completely new in terms of symmetric functions. This paper simultaneously generalizes this Hopf structure by considering a larger class of groups while also restricting the representation theory to a more combinatorially tractable one. Using the normal lattice supercharacter theory of pattern groups, we not only gain a third cano…
We consider the zeta and Möbius functions of a partial order on integer compositions first studied by Bergeron, Bousquet-Mélou, and Dulucq. The Möbius function of this poset was determined by Sagan and Vatter. We prove rationality of various formal power series in noncommuting variables whose coefficients are evaluations of the zeta function and the Möbius function. The proofs are either directly from the definitions or by constructing finite-state automata. We also obtain explicit expressions for generating functions obtained by specializing the variables to commutative ones. We reprove Sagan…
A weight-dependent generalization of the binomial theorem for noncommuting variables is presented. This result extends the well-known binomial theorem for q-commuting variables by a generic weight function depending on two integers. For a special case of the weight function, restricting it to depend on only a single integer, the noncommutative binomial theorem involves an expansion of complete symmetric functions. Another special case concerns the weight function to be a suitably chosen elliptic (i.e., doubly-periodic meromorphic) function, in which case an elliptic generalization of the binom…
The aim of this work is to obtain new inequalities for the variable symmetric division deg index $SDD_α(G) = \sum_{uv \in E(G)} (d_u^α/d_v^α+d_v^α/d_u^α)$, and to characterize graphs extremal with respect to them. Here, $uv$ denotes the edge of the graph $G$ connecting the vertices $u$ and $v$, $d_u$ is the degree of the vertex $u$, and $α\in \mathbb{R}$. Some of these inequalities generalize and improve previous results for the symmetric division deg index. In addition, we computationally apply the $SDD_α(G)$ index on random graphs and show that the ratio $\left\langle SDD_α(G) \right\rangle/…
We show that the Grothendieck bialgebra of the semi-tower of partition lattice algebras is isomorphic to the graded dual of the bialgebra of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables. In particular this isomorphism singles out a canonical new basis of the symmetric functions in noncommutative variables which would be an analogue of the Schur function basis for this bialgebra.
We analyze the structure of the algebra N of symmetric polynomials in non-commuting variables in so far as it relates to its commutative counterpart. Using the "place-action" of the symmetric group, we are able to realize the latter as the invariant polynomials inside the former. We discover a tensor product decomposition of N analogous to the classical theorems of Chevalley, Shephard-Todd on finite reflection groups.
We uncover the structure of the space of symmetric functions in non-commutative variables by showing that the underlined Hopf algebra is both free and co-free. We also introduce the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions in non-commutative variables and define the product and coproduct on the monomial basis of this space and show that this Hopf algebra is free and cofree. In the process of looking for bases which generate the space we define orders on the set partitions and set compositions which allow us to define bases which have simple and natural rules for the product of basis elements.
Given a symmetric polynomial $P$ in $2n$ variables, there exists a unique symmetric polynomial $Q$ in $n$ variables such that \[ P(x_1,\ldots,x_n,x_1^{-1},\ldots,x_n^{-1}) =Q(x_1+x_1^{-1},\ldots,x_n+x_n^{-1}). \] We denote this polynomial $Q$ by $Φ_n(P)$ and show that $Φ_n$ is an epimorphism of algebras. We compute $Φ_n(P)$ for several families of symmetric polynomials $P$: symplectic and orthogonal Schur polynomials, elementary symmetric polynomials, complete homogeneous polynomials, and power sums. Some of these formulas were already found by Elouafi (2014) and Lachaud (2016). The polynomial…
In this work, we propose a new method for a unified study of some of the main features of the theory of the center of the enveloping algebra U(gl(n)) and of the algebra of shifted symmetric polynomials, that allows the whole theory to be developed, in a transparent and concise way, from the representation-theoretic point of view, that is entirely in the center of U(gl(n)). Our methodological innovation is the systematic use of the superalgebraic method of virtual variables for gl(n), which is, in turn, an extension of Capelli's method of "variabili ausiliarie".
