We prove that any arc-presentation of the unknot admits a monotonic simplification by elementary moves; this yields a simple algorithm for recognizing the unknot. We obtain similar results for split links and composite links.

Essential tori in link complements: impossibility of detecting the satellite structure by monotonic simplification

In a recent work "Arc-presentation of links: Monotonic simplification" Ivan Dynnikov showed that each rectangular diagram of the unknot, composite link, or split link can be monotonically simplified into a trivial, composite, or split diagram, respectively. The following natural question arises: Is it always possible to simplify monotonically a rectangular diagram of a satellite knot or link into one where the satellite structure is seen? Here we give a negative answer to that question.

Algorithmic simplification of knot diagrams: new moves and experiments

This note has an experimental nature and contains no new theorems. We introduce certain moves for classical knot diagrams that for all the very many examples we have tested them on give a monotonic complete simplification. A complete simplification of a knot diagram D is a sequence of moves that transform D into a diagram D' with the minimal possible number of crossings for the isotopy class of the knot represented by D. Monotonic Simplification and Recognizing Exchange Reducibility

The Markov Theorem Without Stabilization (MTWS) (see math.GT/0310279) established the existence of a calculus of braid isotopies that can be used to move between closed braid representatives of a given oriented link type without having to increase the braid index by stabilization. Framed link presentations of 3-manifolds by an {O}(n^2) algorithm, III: geometric complex $\mathcal{H}_n^\star$ embedded into $\mathbb{R}^3$

In this final part of a 3-part paper we introduce the pair of "wings" of the abstract PL-colored complexes $\mathcal{H}_{m}^\star$, described in the second paper. The wings, via a weight enhanced Tutte's barycentric embedding of a planar map, produce the unexpected reformutation of a 3-dimensionl problem into a 2-dimensional one.
