A conjecture of Amitsur states that two Severi-Brauer varieties are birationally isomorphic if and only if the underlying algebras are the same degree and generate the same cyclic subgroup of the Brauer group. It is known that generating the same cyclic subgroup is a necessary condition, however it has not yet been shown to be sufficient.
In this paper we examine the case where the algebras have a maximal subfield $K/F$ of degree $n$ with Galois closure $E/F$ whose Galois group is of the form $C_n \rtimes H$, where $E^H = K$ and $|H|$ is prime to $n$. For such as we show that the conjecture is true for certain cases of $n$ and $H$. In particular we prove the conjecture in the case that $G$ is a dihedral group of order $2p$, where $p$ is prime
The aim of this paper is to investigate the birational geometry of Generalized Severi-Brauer varieties. A conjecture of Amitsur states that two Severi-Brauer varieties $V(A)$ and $V(B)$ are birational if the underlying central simple algebras $A$ and $B$ are the same degree and generate the same cyclic subgroup of the Brauer group. We present a generalization of this conjecture to Generalized Severi-Brauer varieties, and show that in most cases we may reduce the new conjecture to the case where every subfield of the algebras is maximal, and in particular to the case where the algebras have pri…
We provide an alternative proof that the Chow group of $1$-cycles on a Severi--Brauer variety associated to a biquaternion division algebra is torsion-free. There are three proofs of this result in the literature, all of which are due to Karpenko and rely on a clever use of $K$-theory. The proof that we give here, by contrast, is geometric and uses degenerations of quartic elliptic normal curves.
We study the semi-decomposable invariants of a split semisimple group and their extension to a split reductive group by using the torsion in the codimension $2$ Chow groups of a product of Severi-Brauer varieties. In particular, for any $n\geq 2$ we completely determine the degree $3$ invariants of a split semisimple group, the quotient of $(\operatorname{\mathbf{SL}}_{2})^{n}$ by its maximal central subgroup, as well as of the corresponding split reductive group. We also provide an example illustrating that a modification of our method can be applied to find the semi-decomposable invariants o…
In a talk at the Banff International Research Station in 2015 Asher Auel asked questions about genus one curves in Severi-Brauer varieties $SB(A)$. More specifically he asked about the smooth cubic curves in Severi-Brauer surfaces, that is in $SB(D)$ where $D/F$ is a degree three division algebra. Even more specifically, he asked about the Jacobian, $E$, of these curves. In this paper we give a version of an answer to both these questions, describing the surprising connection between these curves and properties of the algebra $A$. Let $F$ contain $ρ$, a primitive third root of one. Since $D/F$…
Severi-Brauer varieties are twisted forms of projective spaces (in the sense of Galois cohomology) and are associated in a functorial way to central simple algebras. Similarly quadrics are related to algebras with involution. Since thin projective spaces are finite sets, thin Severi-Brauer varieties are finite sets endowed with a Galois action; they are associated to etale algebras. Similarly, thin quadrics are etale algebras with involution. We discuss embeddings of thin Severi-Brauer varieties and thin quadrics in Severi-Brauer varieties and quadrics as geometric analogues of embeddings of e…
The glider Brauer-Severy variety GBS(A) of a central simple algebra A over a field K is introduced as the set of all irreducible left glider ideals in A for some filtration FA. For fields we deduce that GBS(K) equals R(K) x Z, the product of the Riemann surface of K and the ring of integers Z. For a csa A over K it turns out that GBS(A) = BS(A) x GBS(K), where BS(A) denotes the classical Brauer-Severi variety of A.
Motives of Brauer-Severi schemes of Cayley-smooth algebras associated to homogeneous superpotentials are used to compute inductively the motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the corresponding Jacobian algebras. This approach can be used to test the conjectural exponential expressions for these invariants, proposed in arXiv:1510.08116. As an example we confirm the second term of the conjectured expression for the motivic series of the homogenised Weyl algebra.
An orthogonal involution $σ$ on a central simple algebra $A$, after scalar extension to the function field $\mathcal{F}(A)$ of the Severi--Brauer variety of $A$, is adjoint to a quadratic form $q_σ$ over $\mathcal{F}(A)$, which is uniquely defined up to a scalar factor. Some properties of the involution, such as hyperbolicity, and isotropy up to an odd-degree extension of the base field, are encoded in this quadratic form, meaning that they hold for the involution $σ$ if and only if they hold for $q_σ$. As opposed to this, we prove that there exists non-totally decomposable orthogonal involuti…
We give bounds on the order of torsion in the Chow group of zero dimensional cycles for isotropic Grassmannians and Brauer-Severi flag varieties. To do this, we introduce tools to understand the behavior of torsion in Chow groups with coefficients under morphisms of proper varieties
In this paper we study the relationship between degeneracy and decomposability in abelian crossed products. In particular we construct an indecomposable abelian crossed product division algebra of exponent $p$ and index $p^2$ for $p$ an odd prime. The algebra we construct is generic in the sense of Amitsur and Saltman and has the property that its underlying abelian crossed product is a decomposable division algebra defined by a non-degenerate matrix. This algebra gives an example of an indecomposable generic abelian crossed product which is shown to be indecomposable without using torsion in …
Let $A$ be a sheaf of Azumaya algebras over a Noetherian base $S$. In this paper we describe using generalized Severi-Brauer varieties, a quasi-projective moduli space parametrizing sheaves of ètale subalgebras of $A$. In the case that $S$ is the spectrum of a field, we study the geometry of this moduli space, and show that in certain cases it is a rational variety.
An orthogonal involution on a central simple algebra becoming isotropic over any splitting field of the algebra, becomes isotropic over a finite odd degree extension of the base field (provided that the characteristic of the base field is not 2). The proof makes use of a structure theorem for Chow motives with finite coefficients of projective homogeneous varieties, of incompressibility of certain generalized Severi-Brauer varieties, and of Steenrod operations.
We construct Jordan algebras over a locally ringed space using generalizations of the Tits process and the first Tits construction by Achhammer. Some general results on the structure of these algebras are obtained. Examples of Albert algebras over a Brauer-Severi variety with associated central simple algebra of degree 3 are given.
Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we construct a new motivic measure, which we call the Tits' motivic measure. As a first application, we prove that two Severi-Brauer varieties (or more generally twisted Grassmannian varieties), associated to central simple algebras of period 2, have the same Grothendieck class if and only if they are isomorphic. As a second application, we show that if two Severi-Brauer varieties, associated to central simple algebras of period 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, have the same Grothendieck class, then they are necessarily birational. As a third applicat…
Principal $GL_n$-bundles (aka vector bundles) are locally trivial in the Zariski topology, whereas principal $PGL_n$-bundles (aka Azumaya algebras) are not, to the delight of every non-commutative algebraist. Still, this makes the calculation of motives of representation schemes of algebras next to impossible. In very special cases, Brauer-Severi schemes (and their motives) can be used to tackle this problem inductively. We illustrate this in the case of certain superpotential algebras.
In the present paper we set up a connection between the indices of the Tits algebras of a simple linear algebraic group $G$ and the degree one parameters of its motivic $J$-invariant. Our main technical tool are the second Chern class map and Grothendieck's $γ$-filtration. As an application we recover some known results on the $J$-invariant of quadratic forms of small dimension; we describe all possible values of the $J$-invariant of an algebra with orthogonal involution up to degree 8 and give explicit examples; we establish several relations between the $J$-invariant of an algebra $A$ with o…
Let F be a Henselian valued field with char(F) = p and D a semi-ramified, "not strongly degenerate" p-algebra. We show that all Galois subfields of D are inertial. Using this as a tool we study generic abelian crossed product p-algebras, proving among other things that the noncyclic generic abelian crossed product p-algebras defined by non-degenerate matrices are indecomposable p-algebras. To construct examples of these indecomposable p-algebras with exponent p and large index we study the relationship between degeneracy in matrices defining abelian crossed products and torsion in CH^2 of Seve…
