We state and prove a combination theorem for relatively hyperbolic groups seen as geometrically finite convergence groups. For that, we explain how to contruct a boundary for a group that is an acylindrical amalgamation of relatively hyperbolic groups over a fully quasi-convex subgroup. We apply our result to Sela's theory on limit groups and prove their relative hyperbolicity. We also get a proof of the Howson property for limit groups.
It was conjectured in [KLS14] that non-elementary word hyperbolic groups are never invariably generated. We show that this is indeed the case even for the much larger class of convergence groups.
For relatively hyperbolic groups, we investigate conditions guaranteeing that the subgroup generated by two quasiconvex subgroups $Q$ and $R$ is quasiconvex and isomorphic to $Q \ast_{Q\cap R} R$. Our results generalized known combination theorems for quasiconvex subgroups of word-hyperbolic groups. Some applications are presented.
In this paper we give new requirements that a tree of $δ$-hyperbolic spaces has to satisfy in order to be $δ$-hyperbolic itself. As an application, we give a simple proof that limit groups are relatively hyperbolic.
This is an announcement of some of the results obtained as a part of the second author's Ph.D. thesis. In the first part, we prove that the fundamental group of an acylindrical complex of hyperbolic groups with finite edge groups is hyperbolic in which the vertex groups are quasiconvex. In the second part of the article, we prove the existence of Cannon-Thurston maps for certain subcomplexes of groups in acylindrical complexes of hyperbolic groups (see Theorem 0.4).
In this paper, we prove a combination theorem for a relatively acylindrical graph of relatively hyperbolic groups (Theorem 1.1). Here, we are extending the technique of [Tom21] and constructing Bowditch boundary of the fundamental group of graph of groups. Suppose G(Y) is a graph of relatively hyperbolic groups such that edge groups are relatively quasi-convex in adjacent vertex groups. Also, assume that the fundamental group of G(Y) is relatively hyperbolic. Then we show that the edge groups of G(Y) have finite relative height (Definition 1.5) if and only if they are relatively quasi-convex (…
We prove a combination theorem for hyperbolic groups, in the case of groups acting on complexes displaying combinatorial features reminiscent of non-positive curvature. Such complexes include for instance weakly systolic complexes and C'(1/6) small cancellation polygonal complexes. Our proof involves constructing a potential Gromov boundary for the resulting groups and analyzing the dynamics of the action on the boundary in order to use Bowditch's characterization of hyperbolicity. A key ingredient is the introduction of a combinatorial property that implies a weak form of non-positive curvatu…
It was proved by Sela and by the authors that every formula in the theory of a free group $F$ is equivalent to a boolean combination of $\exists\forall$-formulas. We also proved that the elementary theory of a free group is decidable (there is an algorithm given a sentence to decide whether this sentence belongs to $Th(F)$). In this paper we give an algorithm for reduction of a first order formula over a free group to an equivalent boolean combination of $\exists\forall$-formulas.
In this work, we are concerned with hierarchically hyperbolic spaces and hierarchically hyperbolic groups. Our main result is a wide generalization of a combination theorem of Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto. In particular, as a consequence, we show that any finite graph product of hierarchically hyperbolic groups is again a hierarchically hyperbolic group, thereby answering a question posed by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto. In order to operate in such a general setting, we establish a number of structural results for hierarchically hyperbolic spaces and hieromorphisms (that is, morphisms between su…
We study the speed of convergence to the asymptotic cone for Cayley graphs of nilpotent groups. Burago showed that $\{(\mathbb{Z}^d, \frac{1}{n} ρ,id)\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ converges to $(\mathbb{R}^d,d_{\infty},id)$ and its speed is $O(\frac{1}{n})$ in the sense of Gromov-Hausdorff distance. Later Breuillard and Le Donne gave estimates for non-abelian cases, and constructed an example whose speed of convergence is slower than $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}})$. For $2$-step nilpotent groups, we show that if the Mal'cev completion is non-singular, then the speed of convergence is $O(\frac{1}{n})$ for any c…
We consider two compacta with minimal non-elementary convergence actions of a countable group. When there exists an equivariant continuous map from one to the other, we call the first a blow-up of the second and the second a blow-down of the first. When both actions are geometrically finite, it is shown that one is a blow-up of the other if and only if each parabolic subgroup with respect to the first is parabolic with respect to the second. As an application, for each compactum with a geometrically finite convergence action, we construct its blow-downs with convergence actions which are not g…
Semistability at infinity is an asymptotic property of finitely presented groups that is needed in order to effectively define the fundamental group at infinity for a 1-ended group. It is an open problem whether or not all finitely presented groups have semistable fundamental group at infinity. While many classes of groups are known to contain only semistable at infinity groups, there are only a few combination results for such groups. Our main theorem is such a result. Main Theorem. Suppose $G$ is the fundamental group of a connected reduced graph of groups, where each edge group is infinite …
All sigma-compact, locally compact groups acting sharply n-transitively and continuously on compact spaces M have been classified, except for n=2,3 when M is infinite and disconnected. We show that no such actions exist for n=2 and that these actions for n=3 coincide with the action of a hyperbolic group on a space equivariantly homeomorphic to its hyperbolic boundary. We further give a characterization of non-compact groups acting 3-properly and transitively on infinite compact sets as non-elementary boundary transitive hyperbolic groups. The main tool is a generalization to locally compact g…
We study convergent sequences of Baumslag-Solitar groups in the space of marked groups. We prove that BS(m,n) --> F_2 for |m|,|n| --> \infty and BS(1,n) --> Z \wr Z for |n| --> \infty. For m fixed, |m|>1, we show that the sequence (BS(m,n))_n is not convergent and characterize many convergent subsequences. Moreover if X_m is the set of BS(m,n)'s for n relatively prime to m and |n|>1, then the map BS(m,n) \mapsto n extends continuously on the closure of X_m to a surjection onto invertible m-adic integers.
In this paper we prove a combination theorem for Veech subgroups of the mapping class group analogous to the first Klein-Maskit combination theorem for Kleinian groups in which two Fuchsian subgroups are amalgamated along a parabolic subgroup. As a corollary, we construct subgroups of the mapping class group (for all genus at least 2), which are isomorphic to non-abelian closed surface groups in which all but one conjugacy class (up to powers) is pseudo-Anosov.
We characterize convex cocompact subgroups of the mapping class group of a surface in terms of uniform convergence actions on the zero locus of the limit set. We also construct subgroups that act as uniform convergence groups on their limit sets, but are not convex cocompact.
We give sufficient conditions for a group of homeomorphisms of a Peano continuum X without cut-points to be a convergence group. The condition is that there is a collection of convergence subgroups whose limit sets `cut up' X in the correct fashion. This is closely related to the result in [E Swenson, Axial pairs and convergence groups on S^1, Topology 39 (2000) 229-237].
We give a cohomological characterization of Gromov relative hyperbolicity. As an application we prove a converse to the combination theorem for graphs of relatively hyperbolic groups given in a previous paper of the first author. We build upon, and follow the ideas of, the work of S. Gersten in ``Cohom. lower bounds for isoperim. funct. on groups'' (Topology 37, 1998) about the same topics in the classical Gromov hyperbolic setting.
We prove that a countable group with an effective minimal non-elementary convergence group action is a Powers group. More strongly we prove that it is a strongly Powers group and thus its non-trivial subnormal subgroups are $C^*$-simple.
Multifraction reduction is a new approach to the word problem for Artin-Tits groups and, more generally, for the enveloping group of a monoid in which any two elements admit a greatest common divisor. This approach is based on a rewrite system ("reduction") that extends free group reduction. In this paper, we show that assuming that reduction satisfies a weak form of convergence called semi-convergence is sufficient for solving the word problem for the enveloping group, and we connect semi-convergence with other conditions involving reduction. We conjecture that these properties are valid for …
Motivated by the theory of graph limits, we introduce and study the convergence and limits of linear representations of finite groups over finite fields. The limit objects are infinite dimensional representations of free groups in continuous algebras. We show that under a certain integrality condition, the algebras above are skew fields. Our main result is the extension of Schramm's characterization of hyperfiniteness to linear representations.
Given a group action on a simplicial complex such that each simplex stabiliser admits a cocompact model of classifying space for proper actions, we give conditions implying the existence of a cocompact model of classifying space for proper actions for the whole group. This is used to generalise previous combination results for boundaries of groups and hyperbolic groups.
We study locally compact convergence groups, in particular the link between the convergence property and the Specker compactifications (a genaralization of the ends) of a group.
Following previous work of the second author, we establish more properties of groups of circle homeomorphisms which admit invariant laminations. In this paper, we focus on a certain type of such groups-so-called pseudo-fibered groups, and show that many 3-manifold groups are examples of pseudo-fibered groups. We then prove that torsion-free pseudo-fibered groups satisfy a Tits alternative. We conclude by proving that a purely hyperbolic pseudo-fibered group acts on the 2-sphere as a convergence group. This leads to an interesting question if there are examples of pseudo-fibered groups other th…
We construct irreducible unitary representations of a finitely generated free group which are weakly contained in the left regular representation and in which a given linear combination of the generators has an eigenvalue. When the eigenvalue is specified, we conjecture that there is only one such representation. The representation we have found is described explicitly (modulo inversion of a certain rational map on euclidean space) in terms of a positive definite function, and also by means of a quasi-invariant probability measure on the combinatorial boundary of the group.
Cesaro convergence of spherical averages is proven for measure-preserving actions of Markov semigroups and groups. Convergence in the mean is established for functions in $L^p$, $1\le p<\infty$, and pointwise convergence for functions in $L^\infty$. In particular, for measure-preserving actions of word hyperbolic groups (in the sense of Gromov) we obtain Cesaro convergence of spherical averages with respect to any symmetric set of generators.
We prove a true bootstrapping result for convergence groups acting on a Peano continuum. We give an example of a Kleinian group H which is the amalgamation of two closed hyperbolic surface groups along a simple closed curve. The limit set Lambda H is the closure of a `tree of circles' (adjacent circles meeting in pairs of points). We alter the action of H on its limit set such that H no longer acts as a convergence group, but the stabilizers of the circles remain unchanged, as does the action of a circle stabilizer on said circle. This is done by first separating the circles and then gluing th…
Mean convergence of Markovian spherical averages is established for a measure-preserving action of a finitely-generated free group on a probability space. We endow the set of generators with a generalized Markov chain and establish the mean convergence of resulting spherical averages in this case under mild nondegeneracy assumptions on the stochastic matrix $Π$ defining our Markov chain. Equivalently, we establish the triviality of the tail sigma-algebra of the corresponding Markov operator. This convergence was previously known only for symmetric Markov chains, while the conditions ensuring c…
We prove that a group obtained as a quotient of the free product of finitely many cubulable groups by a finite set of relators satisfying the classical $C'(1/6)$--small cancellation condition is cubulable. This yields a new large class of relatively hyperbolic groups that can be cubulated, and constitutes the first instance of a cubulability theorem for relatively hyperbolic groups which does not require any geometric assumption on the peripheral subgroups besides their cubulability. We do this by constructing appropriate wallspace structures for such groups, by combining walls of the free fac…
We prove a combination theorem for trees of (strongly) relatively hyperbolic spaces and finite graphs of (strongly) relatively hyperbolic groups. This gives a geometric extension of Bestvina and Feighn's Combination Theorem for hyperbolic groups and answers a question of Swarup. We also prove a converse to the main Combination Theorem.
Traditional approaches to combination tones based on Helmholtz theory encounter essential interpreting difficulties, which the most known example is the anomalous behaviour of the combination tone 2f1-f2. Without doubt the phenomenon of combination tones is connected with nonlinear phenomena in the human ear. Therefore, it is generally assumed that the explanation of this phenomenon is possible on the level of the ear. This paper proposes different approach, which assumes the existence of an additional mechanism beyond the ear. The aim of this mechanism is to diminish sensitivity of the audito…
In this paper, we state two combination theorems for relatively quasiconvex subgroups in a relatively hyperbolic group. Applications are given to the separability of double cosets of certain relatively quasiconvex subgroups and the existence of closed surface subgroups in relatively hyperbolic groups.
Let $Λ_0$ be an ordered abelian group. We show how an $\mathrm{ATF}(\mathbb{Z}\timesΛ_0)$ group -- that is, a group admitting a free affine action without inversions on a $\mathbb{Z}\timesΛ_0$-tree -- admits a natural graph of groups decomposition, where vertex groups inherit actions on $Λ_0$-trees. Using recent work of various authors, it follows that a finitely generated group admitting a free affine action on a $\mathbb{Z}^n$-tree where no line has its orientation reversed is relatively hyperbolic with nilpotent parabolics, is locally quasiconvex, and has solvable word, conjugacy and isomor…
The aim of this article is to give a survey of combination theorems occurring in hyperbolic geometry, geometric group theory and complex dynamics, with a particular focus on Thurston's contribution and influence in the field.
We study norm convergence and summability of Fourier series in the setting of reduced twisted group $C^*$-algebras of discrete groups. For amenable groups, Følner nets give the key to Fejér summation. We show that Abel-Poisson summation holds for a large class of groups, including e.g. all Coxeter groups and all Gromov hyperbolic groups. As a tool in our presentation, we introduce notions of polynomial and subexponential H-growth for countable groups w.r.t. proper scale functions, usually chosen as length functions. These coincide with the classical notions of growth in the case of amenable gr…
In this article, I introduce a group-theoretical method to prove positivity of certain linear combinations (with coefficients generally lying in $\mathbb{C}$) of exponential functions under a set of semidefinite linear constraints. The basic group-theoretic fact we rely on is the positivity of the fusion coefficients for multiplication of group characters.
Let G be a sofic group and X a compact group that G acts on by automorphisms. Using (and reformulating) the notion of doubly-quenched convergence developed by Austin, we show that in many cases the topological and the measure-theoretic entropy with respect to the Haar measure of this action agree. Our method of proof recovers all known examples. Moreover, the proofs are direct and do not go through explicitly computing the measure-theoretic or topological entropy.
Addressing a question of Gromov, we give a rate in Pansu's theorem about the convergence in Gromov-Hausdorff metric of a finitely generated nilpotent group equipped with a left-invariant word metric scaled by a factor 1/n towards its asymptotic cone. We show that due to the possible presence of abnormal geodesics in the asymptotic cone, this rate cannot be better than n^{1/2} for general non-abelian nilpotent groups. As a corollary we also get an error term of the form vol(B(n))=cn^d + O(n^{d-2/(3r)}) for the volume of Cayley balls of a nilpotent group with nilpotency class r. We also state a …
If G is a locally essential subgroup of a compact abelian group K, then: (i) t(G)=w(G)=w(K), where t(G) is the tightness of G; (ii) if G is radial, then K must be metrizable; (iii) G contains a super-sequence S converging to 0 such that |S|=w(G)=w(K). Items (i)--(iii) hold when G is a dense locally minimal subgroup of K. We show that locally minimal, locally precompact abelian groups of countable tightness are metrizable. In particular, a minimal abelian group of countable tightness is metrizable. This answers a question of O. Okunev posed in 2007. For every uncountable cardinal kappa, we cons…
Separately continuous bihomomorphisms on a product of convergence or topological groups occur with great frequency. Of course, in general, these need not be jointly continuous. In this paper, we exhibit some results of Banach-Steinhaus type and use these to derive joint continuity from separate continuity. The setting of convergence groups offers two advantages. First, the continuous convergence structure is a powerful tool in many duality arguments. Second, local compactness and first countability, the usual requirements for joint continuity, are available in much greater abundance for conver…
