Bernays introduced a method for proving underivability results in propositional calculi by truth tables. In general, this motivates an investigations of how to find, given a propositional logic, a finite-valued logic which has as few tautologies as possible, but which has all the valid formulas of the given logic as tautologies. It is investigated how far this method can be carried using (1) one or (2) an infinite sequence of finite-valued logics. It is shown that the best candidate matrices for (1) can be computed from a calculus, and how sequences for (2) can be found for certain classes of logics (including, in particular, logics characterized by Kripke semantics).
In this paper, we construct an undecidable 3-variable superintuitionistic propositional calculus, i.e., a finitely axiomatizable extension of the intuitionistic propositional calculus with axioms containing only 3 variables. Since there are no 2-variable superintuitionistic propositional calculi, this is the minimal possible number of variables.
In this paper, we consider iterative propositional calculi, which are finite sets of propositional formulas together with the rules of modus ponens and weak substitution (when formula being substituted must be already inferred). We construct an undecidable iterative propositional calculus using axioms in 3 variables. Particulary, we show that the general problem of derivability for these calculi is undecidable.
In this paper we consider propositional calculi, which are finitely axiomatizable extensions of intuitionistic implicational propositional calculus together with the rules of modus ponens and substitution. We give a proof of undecidability of the following problem for these calculi: whether a given finite set of propositional formulas constitutes an adequate axiom system for a fixed propositional calculus. Moreover, we prove the same for the following restriction of this problem: whether a given finite set of theorems of a fixed propositional calculus derives all theorems of this calculus. The…
In this article, we deal with propositional calculi over a signature containing the classical implication $\to$ with the rules of modus ponens and substitution. For these calculi we consider few recognizing problems such as recognizing derivations, extensions, completeness, and axiomatizations. The main result of this paper is to prove that the problem of recognizing extensions is undecidable for every propositional calculus, and the problems of recognizing axiomatizations and completeness are undecidable for propositional calculi containing the formula $x \to ( y \to x )$. As a corollary, the…
Following G. Mints(Kluwer 2000 and draft 2013), we present terminating and bicomplete proof searches in multi-succedent sequent calculi for intuitionistic propositional logic, fragments of intuitionistic predicate logic and full intuitionistic predicate logic in the spirit of Schuette's schema.
We give sound and complete Hilbert-style axiomatizations for propositional dependence logic (PD), modal dependence logic (MDL), and extended modal dependence logic (EMDL) by extending existing axiomatizations for propositional logic and modal logic. In addition, we give novel labeled tableau calculi for PD, MDL, and EMDL. We prove soundness, completeness and termination for each of the labeled calculi.
We study propositional and first-order Gödel logics over infinitary languages which are motivated semantically by corresponding interpretations into the unit interval [0,1]. We provide infinitary Hilbert-style calculi for the particular (propositional and first-order) cases with con-/disjunctions of countable length and prove corresponding completeness theorems by extending the usual Lindenbaum-Tarski construction to the infinitary case for a respective algebraic semantics via complete linear Heyting algebras. We provide infinitary hypersequent calculi and prove corresponding cut-elimination t…
We present some new methods for logical deduction, based on ideas from ground theory. Roughly speaking, in our calculi a typical deduction will proceed as follows: we first analyse the premiss down to its ultimate grounds; then we discard information irrelevant to the conclusion; and then we synthesize the conclusion up from its ultimate grounds. We give a series of calculi for: classical propositional logic (Chapter 1); classical predicate logic (Chapter 2); modal propositional logic and modal predicate logic (Chapter 3); and some relevantistic fragments of these various systems (Chapters 4 a…
Following A. Kuznetsov's outline, we restore Kuznetsov's syntactic proof of the assertoric equipollence of the intuitionistic propositional calculus and the proof-intuitionistic calculus KM (Kuznetsov's Theorem). Then, we show that this property is true for a broad class of modal logics on an intuitionistic basis, which includes, e.g., the modalized Heyting calculus mHC. The last fact is one of two key properties necessary for the commutativity of a diagram involving the lattices of normal extensions of four well-known logics. Also, we give an algebraic interpretation of the assertoric equipol…
We add to intuitionistic logic infinitely many classical disjunctive tautologies and use the Curry--Howard correspondence to obtain typed concurrent $λ$-calculi; each of them features a specific communication mechanism, including broadcasting and cyclic message-exchange, and enhanced expressive power with respect to the $λ$-calculus. Moreover they all implement forms of code mobility. Our results provide a first concurrent computational interpretation for many propositional intermediate logics, classical logic included.
This paper shows how to derive nested calculi from labelled calculi for propositional intuitionistic logic and first-order intuitionistic logic with constant domains, thus connecting the general results for labelled calculi with the more refined formalism of nested sequents. The extraction of nested calculi from labelled calculi obtains via considerations pertaining to the elimination of structural rules in labelled derivations. Each aspect of the extraction process is motivated and detailed, showing that each nested calculus inherits favorable proof-theoretic properties from its associated la…
In this paper we give an arithmetical proof of the strong normalization of lambda-Sym-Prop of Berardi and Barbanera [1], which can be considered as a formulae-as-types translation of classical propositional logic in natural deduction style. Then we give a translation between the lambda-Sym-Prop-calculus and the lambda-bar-mu-mu-tilde-star-calculus, which is the implicational part of the lambda-bar-mu-mu-tilde-calculus invented by Curien and Herbelin [3] extended with negation. In this paper we adapt the method of David and Nour [4] for proving strong normalization. The novelty in our proof is …
We study a real valued propositional logic with unbounded positive and negative truth values that we call R-valued logic. Such logic slightly extends continuous propositional logic which, in turn, builds on Lukasiewicz many-valued logic. After presenting the deduction machinery and the semantics of R-valued logic, we prove a completeness theorem for finite theories. Then we define unital and Archimedean theories, in accordance with the theory of Riesz spaces. In the unital setting, we prove the equivalence of consistency and satisfiability and an approximated completeness theorem similar to th…
This paper studies the relationship between labelled and nested calculi for propositional intuitionistic logic, first-order intuitionistic logic with non-constant domains and first-order intuitionistic logic with constant domains. It is shown that Fitting's nested calculi naturally arise from their corresponding labelled calculi--for each of the aforementioned logics--via the elimination of structural rules in labelled derivations. The translational correspondence between the two types of systems is leveraged to show that the nested calculi inherit proof-theoretic properties from their associa…
The inverse method is a saturation based theorem proving technique; it relies on a forward proof-search strategy and can be applied to cut-free calculi enjoying the subformula property. Here we apply this method to derive the unprovability of a goal formula G in Intuitionistic Propositional Logic. To this aim we design a forward calculus FRJ(G) for Intuitionistic unprovability which is prone to constructively ascertain the unprovability of a formula G by providing a concise countermodel for it; in particular we prove that the generated countermodels have minimal height. Moreover, we clarify th…
The development of compositional distributional models of semantics reconciling the empirical aspects of distributional semantics with the compositional aspects of formal semantics is a popular topic in the contemporary literature. This paper seeks to bring this reconciliation one step further by showing how the mathematical constructs commonly used in compositional distributional models, such as tensors and matrices, can be used to simulate different aspects of predicate logic. This paper discusses how the canonical isomorphism between tensors and multilinear maps can be exploited to simulate…
The paper is devoted to an algebraic interpretation of Kuznetsov's theorem which establishes the assertoric equipollence of intuitionistic and proof-intuitionistic propositional calculi. Given a Heyting algebra, we define an enrichable Heyting algebra, in which the former algebra is embedded. Moreover, we show that both algebras generate one and the same variety of Heyting algebras. This algebraic result is equivalent to the Kuznetsov theorem. The proposed construction of the enrichable `counterpart' of a given Heyting algebra allows one to observe that some properties of the original algebra …
Any intermediate propositional logic (i.e., a logic including intuitionistic logic and contained in classical logic) can be extended to a calculus with epsilon- and tau-operators and critical formulas. For classical logic, this results in Hilbert's $\varepsilon$-calculus. The first and second $\varepsilon$-theorems for classical logic establish conservativity of the $\varepsilon$-calculus over its classical base logic. It is well known that the second $\varepsilon$-theorem fails for the intuitionistic $\varepsilon$-calculus, as prenexation is impossible. The paper investigates the effect of ad…
In this paper, we introduce a general family of sequent-style calculi over the modal language and its fragments to capture the essence of all constructively acceptable systems. Calling these calculi \emph{constructive}, we show that any strong enough constructive sequent calculus, satisfying a mild technical condition, feasibly admits all Visser's rules, i.e., there is a polynomial time algorithm that reads a proof of the premise of a Visser's rule and provides a proof for its conclusion. As a positive application, we show the feasible admissibility of Visser's rules in several sequent calculi…
We investigate the canonicity of inequalities of the intuitionistic mu-calculus. The notion of canonicity in the presence of fixed point operators is not entirely straightforward. In the algebraic setting of canonical extensions we examine both the usual notion of canonicity and what we will call tame canonicity. This latter concept has previously been investigated for the classical mu-calculus by Bezhanishvili and Hodkinson. Our approach is in the spirit of Sahlqvist theory. That is, we identify syntactically-defined classes of inequalities, namely the restricted inductive and tame inductive …
Standpoint logic is a recently proposed formalism in the context of knowledge integration, which advocates a multi-perspective approach permitting reasoning with a selection of diverse and possibly conflicting standpoints rather than forcing their unification. In this paper, we introduce nested sequent calculi for propositional standpoint logics--proof systems that manipulate trees whose nodes are multisets of formulae--and show how to automate standpoint reasoning by means of non-deterministic proof-search algorithms. To obtain worst-case complexity-optimal proof-search, we introduce a novel …
