We determine the L-S category of Sp(3) by showing that the 5-fold reduced diagonal $\widebarΔ_5$ is given by $ν^2$, using a Toda bracket and a generalised cohomology theory $h^*$ given by $h^*(X,A) = \{X/A,{\mathbb S}[0,2]\}$, where ${\mathbb S}[0,2]$ is the 3-stage Postnikov piece of the sphere spectrum ${\mathbb S}$. This method also yields a general result that $\cat(Sp(n)) \geq n+2$ for $n \geq 3$, which improves the result of Singhof.

Lusternik-Schnirelmann categories of non-simply connected compact simple Lie groups

Let $F \hookrightarrow X \to B$ be a fibre bundle with structure group $G$, where $B$ is $(d{-}1)$-connected and of finite dimension, $d \geq 1$. We prove that the strong L-S category of $X$ is less than or equal to $m + \frac{\dim B}{d}$, if $F$ has a cone decomposition of length $m$ under a compatibility condition with the action of $G$ on $F$. This gives a consistent prospect to determine the L-S category of non-simply connected Lie groups. Rank functions on triangulated categories

We introduce the notion of a rank function on a triangulated category $\mathcal{C}$ which generalizes the Sylvester rank function in the case when $\mathcal{C}=\operatorname{Perf}(A)$ is the perfect derived category of a ring $A$. We show that rank functions are closely related to functors into simple triangulated categories and classify Verdier quotients into simple triangulated categories in terms of particular rank functions called localizing. Rational homotopy theory and differential graded category

We propose a generalization of Sullivan's de Rham homotopy theory to non-simply connected spaces. The formulation is such that the real homotopy type of a manifold should be the closed tensor dg-category of flat bundles on it much the same as the real homotopy type of a simply connected manifold is the de Rham algebra in original Sullivan's theory. Model Structures on Ind Categories and the Accessibility Rank of Weak Equivalences

In a recent paper we introduced a much weaker and easy to verify structure than a model category, which we called a "weak fibration category". We further showed that a small weak fibration category can be "completed" into a full model category structure on its pro-category, provided the pro-category satisfies a certain two out of three property. Topological symmetries of simply-connected four-manifolds and actions of automorphism groups of free groups

Let $M$ be a simply connected closed $4$-manifold. It is proved that any (possibly finite) compact Lie group acting effectively and homologically trivially on $M$ by homeomorphisms is an abelian group of rank at most two. As applications, let $\mathrm{Aut}(F_{n})$ be the automorphism group of the free group of rank $n.$ We prove that any group action of $\mathrm{Aut}% (F_{n})$ $(n\geq 4)$ on $M\neq S^{4}$ by homologically trivial homeomorphisms factors through $\mathbb{Z}/2.$ Moreover, any action of $% \mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Q})$ $(n\geq 4)$ on $M\neq S^{4}$ by homeomorphisms is trivial.

The stable free rank of symmetry of products of spheres

A well known conjecture in the theory of transformation groups states that if p is a prime and (Z/p)^r acts freely on a product of k spheres, then r is less than or equal to k. We prove this assertion if p is large compared to the dimension of the product of spheres. The argument builds on tame homotopy theory for non simply connected spaces.
